Vmax engine for my 1985
pegscraper replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks. I had already seen that one. I've been looking for one that could at least be perused through without having to register. The easiest ways for more power on a 1st gen are going to be VMX cams and a V boost system. You could also get the 35mm VMX carbs, where the Venture has 34mm carbs. You may or may not feel much difference there though. -
Thanks for the pics. Those are Yamaha factory bags, whether they were added later or not. On that model I would guess that they were already there. I'm going to say '97 on the year too, but still not positive. I drilled out the stock mufflers on my wife's bike. I think they sound absolutely terrible. Not my thing. But I guess some like it. With big bikes being taboo there, having that bike ought to be particularly prestigious. Yamaha and their "gray market". Does anyone use that term besides them?

Cracked Kuryakyn Pegs
pegscraper replied to Dave3's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not cracking, no. The chrome has checked and flaked off of mine and they don't look real great. And the chrome is scraped completely off the outside bottom edges. Oh, I guess that one is my fault. They keep touching down. -

What VMX forums do you know of? -
I don't see cow tongue mentioned yet. It's one of my favorites.

Wow. That sounds like quite the pile of adventures.

A nice little project, if you can paint. Are you still lusting after an RSV there, chilly? I'd want to look at it in person first though, to find out what else was missing or didn't work. I don't see antennas either.

Donna is not as much of a freezy rider as you are, eh? Here is where I got most of the information about making a heated jacket. Ctraylor has helped several of us make them. Here is another site for some good information. I pretty closely followed the wiring layout diagram given here. But on Ctraylor's recommendations for wire length, I added a couple extra loops to get enough wire length so it wouldn't be too hot. I don't have any heat control right now. It's either on or off. I figure mine makes around 60W or so of heat, depending on what you figure the nominal battery voltage is. Actually I've been thinking of redistributing the wire to even out the heat a little bit. I've been thinking of taking out my extra loops of wire to make the whole thing run warmer too. Just yesterday I got playing with my mental blocks on an idea for cheap heat control. I could run a few diodes in series with the wire and cut the voltage to the wire down. Each diode would drop .7 V. Then use a switch or two to bypass some or all of the diodes to get higher heat settings. It could all fit inside a small plastic box the size of a key fob that would tuck inside the jacket somewhere. Total cost would be less than $10. A heated jacket is real nice. It makes a 25* morning feel like a 65* morning. I literally forget how cold it is outside until I get off the bike somewhere. Indeed, Lori wants one too, as soon as I get mine dialed in perfect. Heated gloves will be the next step. Much more load and I'll have to get Buckeye's HO stator. So Bob, are you riding today? There's no rain here - yet. But we have high winds. It would be a tough ride today. It was nicer yesterday.

Colortune, I don't think I am impressed . . .

That kind of behavior from the mixture screws is typical of emissions era carburetors, bike or automotive. The idle circuit is so leaned out and so restrictive via other fuel supply orifices in the circuit that the mixture screws themselves have hardly any effect on the mixture. The idea was to keep people from making it too rich and covering up other problems by backing the screws way out. But running too lean like they keep doing increases other emissions that aren't good either. Yes, the spark plugs in this engine fire every time the piston comes to TDC, not just every other time at the combustion stroke. I don't know if this was intended on purpose for emissions reasons or if it is a side effect of a crank triggered ignition. Each trigger point comes around at every crank revolution, and there's no easy way to eliminate the one that isn't needed. It doesn't seem to hurt much, so they let it go. I don't know for which reason the plugs fire this way. -
Black and creme two tone. If I'm not mistaken, I think that has to be either a '96 or '97.

When you're on dial up, it really is faster to look in an atlas.

I had a real nice ride today. I don't think we're going to get anywhere the 41* that they said, maybe half that, and it doesn't look like we're going to see the sun at all today like they said we would. But the roads are clear, and it's a real nice ride. With my heated jacket, I'm nice and comfortably warm. I pulled into a gas station at one point. A pickup pulled in behind me, the guy got out, and I overheard him grumble to someone else about how dang cold it was today. I turned around and looked at him, and he had more layers on than I did, and he's riding inside of a truck. I just laughed. Maybe he needs a heated jacket for his truck. Maybe I should go back out and ride around some more.

There are lots and lots and lots of cities in Rand McNally's atlas that didn't make it into the index. Just two days ago the wife asked me to find Fulton, IN on the map. I go to look. Great, another one not in the index. I get to stare at the map until I find it. Oh there it is, on Rt 25 between Rochester and Logansport. I like their atlas, but the index leaves a little to be desired.

It does sound like the Shuffle model is a pretty nice way to go for a bike. Music storage doesn't get any more compact than that, and it doesn't really need to be. One other difference I remember between the Shuffle and more expensive Ipod models is that other models can be used as a thumb drive on your computer, where the Shuffle cannot. That is the angle at which I was initially looking at them.

I hear if you tear their arms and legs off and throw them back in that they will multiply like crazy. You know, like starfish.

Drumroll please... the ubiquitous ebay - would be the only real source I know to find used mufflers. Still like to see a picture. I like these early Royal Stars. What color is it? We might be able to nail down a year that way.
-
That's because while Ipods are compatible with both PCs and MACs, MP3 players are only compatible with PCs. So, hmmm, which one here is incompatible and less user friendly? Why, it's the PC, the pieces of junk. They love making you buy more software all the time, and making your current software obsolete. Buy MAC equipment and you won't run into that.

I see. So once you buy the song one time, you can download it any number of times to your own devices. I suppose on a bike ride it doesn't matter much what song comes up next, and you wouldn't really want to be fiddling with it on the road anyway. Push play and let it go. I also suppose that on a bike, it doesn't really matter that much of the detail of the music is lost with this recording format. High fidelity these things are not. But on a bike with all the rest of the noise, it'll never be missed.

Well, there is still an option left. I know there was something that was not available anymore. Maybe it was just the turn out style like mine. The thing that stinks about having four mufflers is that twice the mufflers are twice as expensive. Four mufflers sure look cool though, and not very many bikes ever had four mufflers on them.

Well, maybe you'll have some luck Sunday that we won't have. Today here, it's supposed to be 41 and sunny. It's only 20 at the moment, but I made myself a heated jacket this year, so I'll be nice and toasty. I'll be heading out in a few minutes.
-
I looked at that model once. It seemed rather featureless to me. Am I right, there's no way to pick what song you want to hear? I can't remember it all right now, but it seemed to me that to get one that I could actually do anything with, I had to go to the next model up and spend three times as much. At $1 a song, what happens when the thing breaks for whatever reason? Have you lost the songs for good and you have to buy them again?
-
To my knowledge, there's nothing left in new aftermarket Royal Star exhaust for the four muffler system. I believe your only hope will be to find something used.
-
It's supposed to be raining here Sunday. I did get out yesterday though. I may get out Saturday too. At least it's suppose to be sunny here that day.

Oh, I could see even a decent shop not being real happy about that. I don't know any shop near me who carries Avons. (Everyone around here wants Metz for some reason. After what I've seen on our bikes, I won't even look at them.) If I want Avons from a local dealer I have to special order them, and of course they want a deposit for that. I just imagine if I tell them I don't want them after that, that I'm out my deposit. Not sure how to handle this if it were to arise. What would one do if an online joint like SWMoto or even Dennis Kirk or such place sent old tires? Shipping won't be cheap sending them back.

Man, the more I look at this, the better it looks. I wish I had the skills and ambition to do this kind of thing. I'm curious, what color primer did you use underneath black and yellow? I know only very little about painting. It would seem to me that whatever color would work well underneath one of those colors would not work very well underneath the other one.
