1996 rsstd, exhaust popping?
pegscraper replied to okiestrrider's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Nice. I like the '96s for some reason. Mileage should be better than that. I don't hit reserve until 135 at the worst, usually more like 150. Carbs out of sync can also cause exhaust popping. I'd check the jetting on the Baron's BAK and the setting of the mixture screws. -

If they don't fit directly, I'm sure a bracket could be fabricated up somehow. Anything can be done. The impossible just takes a little longer. -
I know what I'm getting, but don't have it yet. I don't see an option for that.

A few of my ideas have been pretty much the same way. Today, it seems that there's no point in inventing and developing anything, except possibly just to play with your mental blocks. I'd still like to figure out how to mount my old Hunter car tire balancing equipment on my bike wheels.

Large portions of NE IN are without power due to the bad ice storm. We have not had any power at our house since Friday morning about 6 AM. We've had to put our food outside so it will keep. We have kerosene heaters and we're not cold. We'll make it. Right now I've taken the laptop to a public library where I can charge up its battery, as well as that of my cell phone. We might have power back this afternoon. But I'm also hearing it might be a few more days. Who knows. Fun, fun.

Two tone paint is probably what drove up the price. They had to go through the entire procedure twice.

I have internet access through a plug deal from a cell phone company. It does not have any email addresses that come with it. You have to have one from somewhere else. I have gmail for an email address. It's all I have. I have only one email address. In your opening post here, it was you said that gmail was not a real email address. Not me. Sorry. I won't deny the frustration of the thing. But disallowing free email services will put a certain amount of people out in the cold. I guess I'm already in here, but what about the next guy? I registered on a new board a couple days ago myself, and I'm glad they didn't have that kind of restriction. But you have to do what you have to do.

Oh, now everyone will be signing up, to go check out Sherry!

Sounds like it's time for some of us to figure out how to wire up our own gloves for heat like has been done with jackets. Ctraylor? You around??

It's just like paint. There shouldn't be any issues at all. I have no idea what it might cost.

gmail is not a real email address? A lot of people use it, including me. Could you maybe use the device where the person has to type in a code shown in a distorted picture to get registered? I've seen those kinds of things elsewhere.

Vmax engine for my 1985

Yes, they've been around a while on some vehicles. On this bike, there's no room under the tank for the stock coils except way up front. They'd be even farther away than they are now. The jury seems to still be out on the advantages, probably because it's winter and no one is riding much. Some are claiming quicker starting, smoother running, slightly better mileage in the highway. They're also very inexpensive. I just don't like the location of the stock rear coils. They get wet and beat up by road grime. I've had problems with mine after extended rides in the rain. And the plug wires are not serviceable. The whole coil would have to be changed. COPs have no plug wires. Whatever the reason, the VMX boys seem real happy with them. -
Wow, I'm sorry to hear it. I don't know what to say. You have our prayers.

I've apparently missed something. If there is such a thing on here, would someone mind pointing me to a thread that explains what's going on? If not, it's really none of my business anyway, and I don't mean to pry. Only if the tale is already on here somewhere.

Thanks again for that site, Squeeze. What a pile of information. I ended up having to register after all so I could see pictures. There were too many of them I wanted to look at. True to form, I've already turned up a modification I didn't know about that I will now have to do this winter - R1 coil on plugs. I have never been nuts about how long the plug wires on this bike are, especially the rear ones, but didn't think there was anything that could be done about it. And while the front coils are nicely protected from weather up under the tank, the rear coils are in a pretty lousy location, down where they get road grime and water thrown on them. But I couldn't see room to mount them anywhere else. Now there's a nice solution. Big sigh. It never ends. -
I picked up somewhere that it was July 21. The date sticks out to me because it's my birthday.

You know, I'll bet it's the one carb per cylinder setup that makes them that sensitive. The intakes ducts are short, the throttle plate is basically right in the intake port, and the plenum is virtually nonexistent. When the throttle plate is opened, there's no other place for the cylinder to draw air and fuel from but the venturi. By contrast, in an older car with a V8, single carb and dual plane manifold, the plenum is huge, the runners are long and have a convoluted shape, and each cylinder can draw not only from the carb, but steal from three other intake ports as well. The vacuum signal from a given cylinder is well damped and long lost by the time it gets to the carb. Thus the hole, and why automotive carbs need a mechanical accelerator pump to go over rich for a second to cover it up.

Yamaha uses the term "gray market" on their pianos also, ones that they deem have been sold outside their designated delivery area. They claim that different humidity and climate conditions in different parts of the country or even different parts of the world have caused problems with their pianos, sometimes very major problems. If they decide that a piano is outside of its delivery area, they will refuse to warranty it or even supply repair parts even if the customer is willing to buy them and pay for the work. I think it's pretty crummy. Pianos are made of wood and are subject to humidity conditions, so there may be a grain of truth to what they say. But the funny thing is that no other piano manufacturer in the industry has these problems or these stipulations. Yamaha is the only one. Not even the other major Japanese manufacturer, Kawai, does this. I say Yamaha just uses cheap materials. (I'm a piano tuner by profession.) Vehicles are not subject to climate conditions like pianos are. So does Yamaha warranty any gray market bikes there that would be new enough to have it? Does anyone else? Or are you just stuck with no warranty on anything at all there?

Thanks Squeeze. Man, I sure could have used that a long time ago. I might not have pestered you so much. (I'm seriously thinking about shoving a car out of the garage so I have room to work on the bike this winter. It would be much easier to keep working on that project when I'm not also trying to ride the thing.) It has nothing to do with safety or privacy. I just don't need anything more to keep track of than I have to. I've been a member of forums that I can't even remember anymore. I'd like to be more active in some other forums that cover other interests and I just don't have the time for everything. I have too many interests and projects and ideas for projects. So this is one way I try to keep things pared down a little. If I don't have any need to post, I don't need to register either. Usually if I lurk around for a while, if I'm not in a hurry, someone else will ask the right questions and I can pick up the information I'm looking for. -

Yes, I've seen that one too. Again, that's a site with a lot of technical information but no forum. I've been looking for an actual forum that they would let people read without registering. -

There is no mechanical accelerator pump as such. The accelerator pump "action" is built into the venturi design somehow, where a quick snap of the throttle will give an extra shot of fuel. I don't fully understand it. But rolling the throttle grip several times before cranking it is doing nothing more than flapping the throttle plates. A fantastic Christmas present. She ought to be thrilled.
