Ah, good. Another member returns to the light side. You'll catch your death of cold riding on a car tire.

Once it's on the rim and on the bike, no one has had a problem. Seems like one guy picked up a nail last year. That's more likely to happen when there's more contact patch on the road, ya know. But that could happen with any tire. A couple of Federal tires have let go trying to get the bead to seat. One of them in particular I blame on the installer, who put the air hose on it and walked away from the thing. Gee, whaddaya think is going to happen? That would happen with any tire. I almost wonder if the installer did that on purpose to keep the guy from using the tire and scare him away from getting another one.

Children’s ATV sales banned?!?!?! Feds at it again

It's the latest version of chemical warfare. Put chemicals and elements into products coming into this country and slowly kill us all off. -
I believe that is right. Indeed, some of the manuals have the white and gray wires switched.

I can't keep track of everybody. What tire did you get? I've heard various things about this, but don't have any real answers. Some have fixed it by tightening the steering bearings. Some by tightening the swing arm bearings. Some apparently with a performance shock. Some by finding just the right air pressure. I've heard some blame it on too soft sidewalls, or on an asymmetrical tread pattern with the grooves slanted all one way across the tire. These latter two go with the tire and little can be done but to get a different tire with a different design. Both the Federal and Kumho are guilty on both counts. We don't have a lot of choices to begin with, and limiting the tire to a symmetrical tread pattern narrows them even further. So far, the only tire I know of with a symmetrical tread pattern is the Mickey Thompson. Possibly the Vredestein is also, I can't remember what it looks like. Good luck.

Very nice looking lift. Whose Roadstar is that? And I'm going to guess - a '99?

That would have to be an eye popper, wouldn't it? To be able to say you're running a Mickey Thompson tire on your motorcycle.

A half inch shorter tire means 1/4" less radius. You'll never feel that little bit of difference in a final gear ratio.

Dragging your mufflers, eh? But I thought CTs couldn't corner. I haven't looked into the Vredestein tire myself, but right off, the brand looks to be a better quality than some of our other options. I have learned of another tire that should fit. The Mickey Thompson Sportsman SR, part number 6652, 26X6.00R15LT. I have to think this would be a real high quality tire. It won't be the least expensive tire though. Cool looking tread pattern, and symmetrical too. http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/street.php?item=SportsmanSR

I do know of one other Federal that let go on installation. A friend of mine had bought the same tire as me and was going to do this. But it let go when the installer put the air on it to seat the beads and walked away from it. Why in the world a guy would walk away from the tire when there's air blowing into it, I don't know. But I call this an installer problem.

How often he's changed the oil is all I'd wonder about. This same basic V4 engine has been used since '83 and is a proven, very reliable engine that will run a long long time.

This V4 engine is very reliable. A few around here have more than 100,000 miles on them. It's a very nice riding bike. I like mine a lot, really. I was just disappointed in the power level and wanted it to run like the XS1100 that I had owned before. But if the low power is not an issue for you, you might find the rest of it perfectly suitable too. -
Wow, that blows.

Keeping the rpms up does help, but they're geared so daggone high that that's hard to do. Then the too small cams and carbs don't let it make any high rpm hp either. If you're handy, it's not that difficult to swap cams and carbs for not very much money though. The VMX rear gear is an easy swap too. Intake port size is the same on all these bikes, no matter what the year. The '05 and newer RSTDs did have the too small cams and carbs and too high gearing issues corrected, same as the '99 and newer 2nd gen RSVs. If anything is slower than a 1st gen, it's the '96 - '01 Royal Star. That is a true statement. But not so with the 2nd gen RSVs. -
M.B.s may be nice when they're new, but when those fun little gimmicks quit working, look out. There is way too much electronic stuff in those vehicles to go bad. Nothing but bells and whistles. Why is an electric motor needed to adjust the tilt on the steering wheel? Just too much work to pull a lever? And brake disc heaters??? Why? If they quit working, you'd never even know it. I refuse to ever buy one and support this kind of stuff.

I learned to ride on that bike's predecessor, a Honda Twinstar 200. It's a great bike for learning and taking the riding test for a license, and it's a great bike for puddle jumping around town. Top speed on the thing was maybe 65 at WOT with a tailwind. With a headwind it wouldn't go over 55. In the '80s when the speed limit was 55, it was fine. But I wouldn't want to get on an interstate with that thing today. Oh yeah, that one sure is pertttttttty though.

If you didn't find it to be underpowered, well, to each his own. I sure found that to be the case. The cams and carbs are too small for the engine's displacement, and the thing is geared too high throughout the whole drivetrain, not just fourth and fifth gears. The VMX rear gear is all but mandatory in this bike. And 1300 ccs worth of V4 engine should have a lot more power than this thing makes. After all, it's basically a VMX engine. I've corrected most of my bike's non-complementary engine parts, but I'm still in the process of correcting other things. Yamaha ought to be slapped for what they did to this bike. But, if you're satisfied with it as is, then more power to you. Or is that less power to you? One of my favorite things about the bike is the four mufflers. Not very many bikes ever had four mufflers. -
Carb Jet Kit for Gen 2 RSV
pegscraper replied to wm.butler's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The first time taking the carbs out is the worst. The second or third times go pretty quickly. Don't see much point in a jet kit though. Was it running badly before? Slip on mufflers don't make enough change to need to rejet. -
You'd have to have a tire 9% larger, or about 2 1/2" larger, to correct for the speedometer. That size tire wouldn't fit, and it wouldn't look good even if it did.

Yeah, there's why, right there. An arial view of our roads, you would think you're looking at a piece of graph paper.
-
Maybe you have curvier roads in IA than we do in northern IN. We just don't get much sidewall time around here.

Some colors of black will have a blue tint to them anyway. There's no such thing as a solid black. It will always show a tint of some other color if you look for it.
-
And just think, it'll be at least 30,000 miles bare minimum before you have to do it again.

removal of trunk
pegscraper replied to magnum-pei's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A few guys have done it. I think it looks pretty nice if you don't need the trunk. One guy in my city has done it. I've seen it in front of me and talked to the guy a bit. I don't have a picture of his though. I thought sure I had a picture of another one I had seen online a while back, but I can't find it.
