Here is a blog that I've been following on trading. Tim Knight is the Senior Vice President of Technology for the aforementioned Investools site.

Pinstriping is fine. Anything that would fall under the custom paint work category. Repaints in stock colors is about all I'm not interested in seeing. Pretty much anything else is good. (You guys are making this too difficult. ) A mention of bike year and paint color names or paint codes would be good too.

Interesting. I only let about half of it download, though. I've been out of the heavy metal loop for a while. I didn't realize that Steve Vai was still around. I still love a good distorted guitar sound though. That song sounded like a train rolling into the station.

My bike never had carb heaters in the first place. I've ridden in all temperatures down to about 15º and in all kinds of weather and have never had any problems with carburetor icing. The sky is not going to fall if they're left disconnected on those bikes that have them.

Worth a try.

It's always a good idea to ask your insurance agent about it. Some companies make it an issue and some don't. Some bigger pictures there, GG? Those aren't big enough to see anything.

If you had a valve tight enough to be ruining gas mileage, the engine wouldn't have 37,000 miles on it. It would have died and needed a valve job a long time ago. If the valves have never been checked, it's not a bad idea to do it. It won't have anything to do with gas mileage though. The carbs are not in the way of the valve covers at all. I've heard a bit about the crossed ignition wires. I don't know or understand the whole issue. I know some of the shop manuals have been wrong too, and have shown the wires for #2 and #4 switched. On some VMXs, the front left coil fires the front right cylinder and vice versa. I don't know why they did that. In the case of your Royal Star, the gray wire should run to the front left coil and fire that cylinder - #2. The white wire should run to the front right coil and fire #4. I think you're digging a little too deep here. The crossed wire issue was straightened out by this time anyway. Check those jets.

I made no mention of 1st or 2nd gens, years or models. If you have a Venture or RSV or Royal Star or RSTD with a custom paint job with non-factory colors, throw a couple pictures in here. (That means you, Randy.)

I know there are several here who have painted their bikes with non-stock colors or paint schemes. I can't keep track of everyone who has. It would be nice to have them all in one place. If you have repainted your bike with non-stock colors, throw a picture or two in here.

Yes, if that's bad, it will lose 3 - 4 mpg right there. That's a possibility, but that doesn't account for all of his poor mileage. It should be up right around 40.

Here's an outfit I've been seriously looking into. Now is a great time to know how to play the downside of the market, bearish, as they say. Investools

It sounds like jet sizes are the next thing to check. And aftermarket mufflers normally don't require a rejet. Have any modifications been made to the air box? Stock jets for a '97 Royal Star are #20 pilots and #95 mains. The early Royal Stars do vibrate a little. They don't have a counterbalancer shaft in the engine, and their being way overgeared doesn't help the situation. They lug very easily, even at speed. Swapping for the VMX rear gear will up the rpms just a little and greatly help things out.

The factory must have had a good reason, eh? That's crummy logic for doing anything. That's putting way too much faith in Yamaha's decisions. Do you really believe that they never make any mistakes, they never do anything they shouldn't have done, or don't do something they should have done? I think we all know better than that.

I gotta say congratulations on the weight loss. Two hundred pounds, wow. I'd like to lose 40 to 50 and find it not easy to do. I just don't like to be hungry.

They probably do a little bit. I didn't even think about it. But the foam is thick enough I don't see the staples poking through it to the outside. Just find the shortest staples you can.
-
Eighth inch staples? I used whatever staples were in my Arrow staple gun. Probably 1/2" wide by 3/8" deep.

No real answer, because you're right. That temperature is a little high. Several of us have unplugged them. My bike never had them to begin with. I've ridden in 20º temps many times and never had any trouble. They're just not real necessary. That 60W is much more useful elsewhere. Heated carbs or heated jacket for me? Hmmm. That's a toughie.

You know what I'm talking about, Joe. It was 70º here yesterday. A mostly clear, beautiful day. I added a few miles to my bike's odometer. And it got dark far too early.

Ya buncha whiners. I love it myself. I lose one hour of sleep one night in the spring. It takes all of one whole day to adjust to it, if that. And for that I get an extra hour of daylight at a usable time of day every single day for the next several months. That means more riding or wrenching time, or whatever else needs to be done. There's no need for broad daylight at 5 AM in the summer time. Then at the end of it all I get my hour of sleep back. This is a trade I gladly make. I had been itching for it ever since I was old enough to understand what it was. Indiana just adopted this in the past couple years. We had been behind for far too long. DST means that better weather is on the way. (Not today though. It's pouring rain here.)

Wow, that muffler picture is great! And he does that on a car tire. I do get a kick out of watching other people's heads turn when they hear the awful noise when I touch down in a corner. -

Yeah, if I scrape the kickstand up very much more, the kick down lever is going to fall off of it. Anything that stands proud of the exhaust pipes is in a bad place. I'd like to put some footpegs right about where the horn is on the right side. I don't think that side would be too difficult. I can always relocate the horn. But I can't figure out how to get one in the same spot on the left side. -

Interesting idea. That would be okay for a trike, but I could never use it. I have scrapes on my kickstand. I've been trying to come up with a way to mount some pegs in almost that exact spot. I'm looking at the frame member that goes in front of the exhaust Y and trying to figure out how to mount something to that, but don't really have anything yet. -

Now there's an interesting question. About the only thing to do is take the thing apart to get to the switch and see if there's any way you can modify the shift linkage pieces to do that. Maybe there's an indicator pin that can be moved or something. I don't know. -

Or if you're like me, you may think that some things are easier to fix yourself and be done with it rather than figuring out how to get it into a dealer and have another ride back home, waiting who knows how long on a dealer to get it on his schedule, and then having to do it again to pick it up, possibly having to adjust your work schedule to get there when they're open. The neutral switch is behind the middle gearcase cover. It may need adjustment or replacement.
