  1. Wow. Those are fantastic. I've never seen it. Thanks for posting them.
  2. Not difficult. But fiddly. Just follow the shop manual. I did find I didn't need to remove the coolant lines to get everything apart though. That saves some time and fiddling.
  3. If you can't do any modifications, you'll have to rebuild the stock 28mm carbs then, or find a good set on ebay from someone who swapped to the 32s. And... what I did, you mean? That's my bike you're looking at. I developed that process for the early Royal Stars and wrote the article. I can make the adapter plates and mill the intakes for anyone who wants them. I've sold several sets of these. Being a machinist, I'm sure you can do that yourself, too. You were at Osgood this past weekend, weren't you? This bike was there.
  4. On this bike, the cruise control module doesn't know what gear the transmission is in. Neither does the ignition module. The overdrive indicator light is controlled by switches independently of these. Reducing the speedo healer percentage is probably the easiest way to do this. How much adjustment is available on those things? I don't have one. The cheap and dirty way that the guys are getting around the top speed limiter on the '09 VMX is to use a 555 timer chip, and design a circuit such that above a certain road speed, it cuts the speedo sensor pulses in half. That cuts the speedo reading in half too, but it works. They can be ridden faster than what their top speed is supposed to be limited to. And the true speed is not hard to figure. Just double the reading. This would be more work than the speedo healer, but cheaper too, if someone can design it. I don't have a lot of details on this. Squeeze would have more information on this kind of thing. What I wonder is if, on this bike, this thing could be applied only to the cruise control module and not affect the speedo at all.
  5. Here is the article that tells you how to put the 32mm carbs that Pinwall has onto the early Royal Stars. It's not as difficult as it looks at first. It's really pretty easy. And it gives them a big increase in performance. Then you can sell off the silly 28mm carbs and intake boots and recover most or all of the cost.
  6. What helmet did you find relieved the buffeting the most?
  7. The shop manual does have some strange things in it. I don't always follow it to the letter. Pretty much I only refer to it for bolt torque specs. Keep us posted on what else you find.
  8. A thousand miles in ten years? The poor unloved bike. I can't help but wonder if swapping some 32mm carbs on it would be cheaper than buying four rebuild kits from a dealer.
  9. I would call .06 ohms a nominal delta, especially since your VOM isn't very sensitive. When you say pickup coil, this isn't the one that triggers the spark plugs, is it? That coil has nothing to do with the charging system. Are you meaning to check the continuity of the stator?
  10. I don't understand it. The one time I put D404s on my bike, I got 16,000 miles out of them, both front and rear. I didn't have any complaints about them in general. But I do the CT boogie now anyway.
  11. Well, I don't quite follow. I used bungee straps. Just make sure there's good tension on them. I have Willie and Max's "Hooker" under the rear seat, so I have plenty of places to strap stuff down. I'm all the time carrying stuff with me.
  12. Yes I have. Set it down over the backrest so it's half on the luggage rack and half on the rear seat, and strap it down.
  13. I had seen those and that's what gave me the idea. But I looked everywhere and couldn't find them for this bike. So I made my own. It was probably cheaper anyway. Oh, you're saying that I should make them for others? I did keep the pattern, so it wouldn't take long. I haven't seen anyone else ever inquire about them though. Where would I sell them anyway? Really, I have too many other things that I ought to be doing.
  14. So how long does the surgery for carpal tunnel last? My wife has heard tales of some people having to have it done several times. I'm developing wrist problems myself and fear I may be headed in this direction.
  15. You might like to see what I did in lieu of no lower fairing. I put the big Baron's bars on and made some vinyl covers for them. I couldn't find anyone who made them for these bars, so I made my own. I left the sides open for highway pegs, which are now there. I also installed National Cycle's wind deflectors which mount right above them, as well as put Y's lower windshield deflectors on the forks. I figure this is about as good as it gets. These things help a lot in cold weather too. When you want a little more wind on your legs, the vinyl covers slip off and NC's wind deflectors turn back.
  16. +1. Spray it on, hose it off. Mallwart probably has it. Any automotive parts house will also have it.
  17. The V Star 650 has a cable clutch. You might put a little slack in the cable. Just make sure the clutch still fully releases. To fit smaller hands better, you could also literally bend the lever in a little bit. Wedge a block of wood between the lever and the handlebars up near the pivot bolt, and grab ahold of the lever good and pull it back. I did this on my wife's V Star 1100. It would be nice if Y would make these levers adjustable on the cruisers like they do on their sport bikes. One size does not fit all.
  18. X3. It's just not that difficult. And quick, too. No fiddling around with jacks, center stands, or wooden blocks.
  19. Those look real nice. I just wish they didn't lose so much cornering clearance for the two wheelers. Of course, on a trike, they're fine.
  20. The 14mm M/C from the later Roadstars that had these calipers is the one you want. It matches the style of our stock ones exactly. The bore size is cast into the body right beside the sight window.
  21. I'm more of a go guy than a show guy myself. I don't know whether my favorite mods have been the power adders I've done or these R1 brakes that make the whoa match the go. The R1 brakes are incredible. I think everyone should be doing them. There's no such thing as unneeded braking power. I chuckle when someone says that they can lock up their brakes easily enough as they are, as if to say that they can't be any better than that. Just because the brakes can be locked up doesn't mean that's the most braking power there is. And better brakes don't make it easier to lock them up. That's a big misunderstanding. In fact, it's just the opposite. The easier the brakes lock up, the less controllable braking power there is. Better brakes actually make it harder to lock them up and give you a lot more control in the range before they do. The R1 calipers stretch out the sliding friction window and lessen the sticking friction window. Most or all of Y's other models now have these or even better brakes. So why are they still putting their poorest brakes on their heaviest bikes? You make a good point on the two piece caliper flexing issue. I had been reconsidering my own comment anyway. The reasons why I like the R1s in the front and the reasons why I have been thinking it wasn't needed in the back are contradicting themselves. I may wind up doing the rear caliper too. I need to investigate the rear master cylinder bore size though. I know on our front brakes (at least the 2nd gens), the stock 5/8" M/C bore size doesn't work well with the R1 calipers. They really need the smaller 14mm bore size. So I need to investigate what's available in rear M/Cs. What are the front and rear M/C sizes on the 1st gens? Do you have to swap the stock ones for something else to make them work properly?
  22. We haven't been able to get down there to see my brother for a few years. Maybe this year. We owe him a few visits. Lori wants to ride her own bike down there so she can ride around herself. She does like riding her own bike. She wants to go hit the Dragon. Northern IN is pretty flat and boring. Southern IN is much better. How long have you been in FW? Are you going to the M&E in Osgood this Saturday? Another member here is going also and it sounds like he has some nice roads picked out to hit on the way down and back.
  23. So that's what a Federal looks like without white walls. Let us know how you like it.
  24. Well, see, that was the best part. The wife was gone on a business trip anyway. She knew nothing about it. (Actually, she rented a Harley Softail Deluxe herself that Saturday where she was and did some riding of her own.) The project I skipped was my own anyway. Most of them are. She just chuckles at some of my projects. I've been working on this one a few nights this week. Maybe I can keep Saturdays open. I couldn't have dug an 18" deep 50' long trench through my yard all in one day anyway.
  25. That popping on decel is the idle mixture being too lean - mixture screws or pilots jets. These early Royal Stars didn't have the AIS, so it won't be that. Four pod filters on the carbs certainly required rejetting. Do you know what sizes of jets are in there? Removing the baffles from your mufflers usually won't require any jetting changes.
