  1. Wow I am sorry to hear he has passed on, but I sure am glad to hear you say this, too. I never got to meet him here, but I will meet him one day.
  2. The biggest reason if not the only reason, is that the MkI is geared lower. To my knowledge, per the part numbers, the cams are all the same thing. "Feel" and "cylinder pressure" are not good indicators of cam specs.
  3. I cut the back of the shift lever off of mine. I couldn't get used to the thing, so I finally gave up trying to. It was nothing but in my way. I like how much foot room there is without it. I frequently ride with my feet farther back anyway, more underneath me. I couldn't do that before. Put a little clear paint on the cut off end to help keep it from rusting.
  4. Hey, he asked the question. Who are you to say that I wasted my time answering it?
  5. When I see other 1300cc 4 cylinder engines making 135+ hp, some of them even by Yamaha themselves, and this one only pulls around 98, there is a problem. I don't care how much you rev it up. This engine doesn't make the power it ought to be making for its size. Out of your four options, exhaust, air filters, and rejetting will get you a lot of bench racing points, but will get you nothing on the road. A set of VMX cams and valve springs will get you a few hp and are relatively inexpensive if you can find used parts. A big bore kit will give you a huge increase in power, with an equal decrease in the size of your wallet. And I've never heard of anyone doing stroker kits. There are a few other options too, depending on your ambition level. The D3K ignition module and VMX rear gear have been mentioned. Larger carbs, more like around 35mm or bigger, would be a huge improvement. The stock 32mm carbs are too small for a 1300cc engine. Carbs being too small will make the bike feel weak at elevated (read above legal) speeds on the highway. Fitting a VMX D3K ignition module would help a lot. It has much better spark advance curves and a higher rev limit. Last but not least, put a transmission in the bike with more appropriate gear ratios and get rid of the silly, worthless, extreme overdrive that is fifth gear. Put in a transmission from a 1st gen bike. The gear ratios in the 2nd gen trans are too far apart and the upper gears are too high. This engine likes to rev up, so why did Y give it gears that won't let it run in its powerband? Give it the gears that let the engine run where it wants to run. Do these things and you will have a whole new bike on your hands.
  6. Yes I do. Actually, my front tire is an Avon rear MT - in the smaller front tire size, the double dark side. It feels just fine to me.
  7. It sounds like you found the right ones. If you post a picture of them up here, several of us could tell you by looking at them if they're right or not. They look totally different than the 28mm carbs. Indeed, the 35mm VMX carbs would be ideal, but unfortunately they won't fit in the frame. The 32mm Venture carbs are about all there is to work with. They are a pretty easy swap. The only aftermarket ignition module I know of is the Dyna 3000. I set mine for curve 5 and the 8000 rpm limit, but you'll need stronger valve springs to run that rpm. I put the VMX cams and springs in mine too, which will handle higher rpms than that. Now I wish I could set the rev limiter higher.
  8. If only that could work. The funny thing is that most tree huggers think that everyone should drive these things but them. They won't be caught in one. I passed one of these silly things on the road today. I think my bike's wheelbase is longer than that car. But what I really want to know is where is Ralph Nader now, hollering "unsafe at any speed"? The bandwagon is going the other way now, although nothing has really changed.
  9. I'd like to see how either one of those cars would hold up to a mid '70s Cadillac.
  10. The metal casting inside only goes up about halfway, and that's where the worst cracks appear. But they have to be really really bad to actually draw air and cause any problems. A dealer is the only place you'll find new ones.
  11. There's a Fort Wayne in Detroit? I didn't know that. There's also an old Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne, IN. It got its name the same way, too. It's not on the original location though. It's been moved a few blocks and across a river.
  12. Over the weekend, Lori and I rode our bikes down near to Johnson City, TN, where my brother lives. It's about a twelve hour ride from home. Lori rode her own bike there too. One of our activities for the weekend was riding The Snake, also known as Hwy 421 or Shady Valley. It is fully the equal of the Dragon, but not quite so widely known. My brother and his wife on the left are riding a '95 Kaw GPZ 1100, my beaming wife is riding her '02 V Star 1100, and almost completely hidden from view is my bike. We put on over 1200 miles by the time we were back home, all without incident. A good weekend. http://www.shadyvalleycountrystore.com/
  13. What kind of a front end set up is that? I see extra springs and brackets. What is the point of it?
  14. I opened mine up a little bit. I couldn't tell anything, but I stayed pretty conservative with it. I didn't open them up as much as I was told to do. One of these days I'll go back and do them the rest of the way. I know, not a 1st gen, but hey.
  15. My wife even as just a passenger on my bike says that to her it feels like it rides softer and feels more stable. Enjoy.
  16. Nope. Nothing that ought to be tapped into to power anything more than a relay coil. Best to run accessories straight from the battery. I do use the headlight circuit or running light circuit to power relays to turn the accessories on and off with the key. But the main power lines come from the battery.
  17. Nice find. But ya know, for those who can't turn up an FJR rear gear and can only find a VMX unit, that shock bolt comes out of the housing. Then you could put a plug in the hole since you were painting it anyway. Or pound a ball bearing into it. Or leave it open. I left mine open because it's never seen anyway.
  18. I am also using an Avon MT/90-16 rear tire backwards on the front. It has a lot more rubber on it than their standard rear tire. It rolls along just fine. I'm looking forward to not buying another tire for the front of my bike next year.
  19. Apparently not loud enough. The Stebel, that is. I literally had some imbecile back up at a stop sign yesterday and hit me. I laid on the horn and didn't let up, and revved up the engine to let the Kromewerks make some more racket. She even appeared to be looking in the mirror. But she didn't stop backing up until she hit me. Then she drove off. Fortunately there was no damage or I would have followed her home and called the police from there and seen her charged with a hit and run. Maybe I should have anyway. I don't know. But I decided that both she and I would be better off if I didn't. WTH does it take to get some people's attention???!!! I don't know that more horns would have done any good. I think I am going to start carrying rocks with me.
  20. Was she wearing Crocs by any chance? That would be the only detail missing.
  21. I always wanted one of those. I had an S10 for a while, but didn't get to it. A friend of mine had one though, with a 400 SBC in it. He told me it would spin the tires at 55 mph. I didn't doubt him.
  22. Yes it will. I know of a few folks who have done that. The biggest issues will be the TPS connection, the airbox, and the throttle cables. For the TPS, you'll need to splice and solder the matching connector into the wiring harness. Just match the three wire colors. That one is easy. No factory airbox will fit. The easiest thing is to use air pods, and then you'll have to rejet the carbs to match. The throttle cables may need a little bit of the housing cut off of one of them to get the cable ends to reach properly. That one is a little tricky, but it can be done. I may be forgetting something that will come to me later.
  23. They're not designed to be adjustable. But one thing you might do is grind a little off of the pushrod between the lever and the piston. That would bring the lever in some. The only other thing you could do is let a little air bubble in the line...
  24. That's about what they run at the rear wheel. The only thing you're going to find having him play with jets is that your wallet will fit into your pocket more easily. I hear you though. A 1300cc V4 engine should be making a lot more power than this one does.
  25. Never throw away old tools.
