What Model RSTD do I have?

The location of the ignition switch has nothing to do with the model. It has to do with the year. The first year or two it was tucked under the seat. Afterward that it was put up under the side of the tank. I don't know exact years. -

I think I would call yours a Standard. Those aren't the windshield and bags that Y put on the TC. The bags are larger and the windshield has a much larger chrome trim piece across the front. Y offers one like that, but the shape looks different. I could be wrong, but I think that one is aftermarket. Your bike has the standard seats on it. The TC came with wider and supposedly softer seats. Also, the TC usually had a Tour Classic emblem on each side of the front fender. I say usually because there was some variation on that by year and I don't know all the details of it. Obviously it doesn't take much to accessorize a Standard and make it more useful. I couldn't have a bike without side bags on it. The bags are not quick disconnect on the newer models. The passenger's backrest is, and it seems like maybe the windshield is too. Quick disconnect might be nice, but then you have to worry about someone walking off with the stuff. I heard a tale from my local dealer about that happening to someone in town here. That stuff is expensive to replace. I'm just as happy to have mine anchored down. -

Welcome aboard from another '96 owner. Technically, calling it an RSTD isn't correct. There wasn't a Tour Deluxe or a Boulevard either one in '96. Those models came in later years. The models available in '96 were a Standard and a Tour Classic. The Standard was bare bones. The Tour Classic came with a windshield and semi-hard side bags and maybe another odd small thing or two. I like the '96s for some reason. Let's see some pics. Pics of your ride is the only real rule we have around here. My own bike came as a Standard model to which a lot has been added. -

I'd like to know just exactly how you accomplish this so that it's not obvious where it came from. Do you flip it up over your head, hold your hand out to your side, put your hand back on the grip and let it drop out from there? What? I've been trying to resist the urge to carry a little pea gravel with me, and I'm losing.

First gear has seemed surprisingly loose on the half dozen trannies I've looked at. I don't know why, but it seems like that's just the way it is. Pst, Randy, my tranny swap is done and I love it. I'm waiting to hear how you like yours.

I've had good results and gotten good mileage out of both Dunlop D404 and Avon Venom. -
I'd do exactly what Rocket said, to a T. Use the newer gearset for a better second gear design. The dogs are probably already back cut. Use your current middle gear assembly so you don't have to reshim and adjust anything. Use the newer hardened thrust washer and locks. Put it back together.

So I figure you have it set on 4 cylinders and the thing is designed for a waste spark engine? Many two cylinder tachs work correctly on this bike because of the waste spark issue. I wish I could find a shift light for that price. That's really all I need.

No loss of gas mileage. This bike is geared too high. One might think that spinning slower rpms saves gas, but when the throttle has to be opened further to pull that high of a gear, there goes any potential gas savings. A more appropriate gear will let the throttle be more closed (which is not something you will feel), and does not use any more gas but does give better performance.

I'm running the Avon Venom rear tire in reverse on the front. No negative side effects, unless someone thinks longer tire life is bad. I ran this tire all last summer and I'm a long ways from having to replace it. I won't have to buy another tire for the front this year.

We bought a '98 Deville three years ago. I will say I like it so far. The wife says it's the most comfortable car she's ever owned and has a very quiet interior. She comes from a family who used to drive the smallest tinkertoy cars on the road and laughed at Cadillac's "excesses". Now she loves the thing. I think comparing this engine to other engine problems they had 15 - 20 years prior is a little lame. There was nothing wrong with the 425 engine. The V8 6 4 was troublesome. There was a reason it only lasted one year. The HT4100 was definitely a problem. It was a rushed and forced design. But even the 4.9 successor to that had few problems. I am a little wary of all the electric and electronic crap in this car, but it's no different than any other newer car, and better than some I've seen. Some of the general maintenance that used to be very simple doesn't look like much fun on this car. But again, that's the same with any other newer car and better than many. This is a 4000 lb. car with an engine making enough power that it can really move when you need to pass someone and get 23/30 mpg doing it. This isn't the junk we had to put up with in the '70s and '80s. I've gotten 30 mpg out of mine on the highway. A greenie weenie Toyota Camry doesn't do better than that, and it's a much less comfortable car and more expensive to buy. I'd buy this car again in a second. But I'm one who is willing to have to fix a thing or two sometimes when I can buy a ten year old really nice looking car for $3000.

The writers gave up and have stopped writing upgrades for this software? That seems surprising. It looks like this was a very popular software package. In the past few years, I've seen other boards I sometimes visit change from whatever they had which was sometimes very cumbersome and start using vBulletin, and countless other boards that I tripped over one time were using this. I've never seen anybody leave this and go to something else. It will be interesting to see what you as well as other boards come up with. I appreciate all the work you do for this, Don. I don't know how you find the time...

The 155/80R15 CT is quite a bit shorter tire than the stock MT size. That size comes up because it is the first size that was tried on this bike. But it was realized soon after that a 165 is a better match. If we have a choice in size, use the 165 and not the 155.

If he can actually get a manufacturer to make a size they don't currently make, then I guess you're right, I didn't pick that up before. A 165/80R15 CT is the size that fits and matches the width and circumference of the stock size MT almost exactly. My current tire has 2 1/4" WWs and they're a nice size. I don't have a brand preference, but a US made name brand would be nice instead of the foreign made ones of questionable quality currently available.

The manufacturers have to make a tire in the correct size to begin with, do they not? Dave won't get anybody to make a size they don't already make.
