Gary Z, Vmax exhaust won't work. Mounting for our mono shock gets in the way. -

another 2nd gear question

Showing my age a little, I've been riding Ventures since they came out in 83. Back then I lived in Chicago. Yamaha was only repairing the ones that actually failed. And the dealerships were instructed to mark them with a punch mark. Right above the middle gear cover, on the engine case, there are two round machined flat spots. The mechanic was instructed to put a punch mark on the left one. I own an early 84 that has the punch mark. -
If it's never leaked before, and you haven't had the side cover off for stator replacement or starter clutch repair, I'd buy oil seals for the shifter rod and clutch rod (behind slave cylinder), and an o-ring for the gear indicator sending unit. Do them all while your in there.

Starting NOT in neutral

If your asking about the clutch switch, yes it is spring loaded. If your's doesn't pop out on it's own, there's your problem. -

It is your clutch switch. If you run your hand under the master cylinder, right where the clutch switch mounts, you will feel a small hole. Take a phillips head screw driver, insert it in that hole and push in. While pushing in, pull the clutch switch out. Soak it good with WD40 while working the little button in and out, this will give it good cleaning. Then re-insert the switch. This should alow you to start while in gear. It's a pain, and embarassing to kill it as the light turns green. And you can't find neutral. -

Or, just look at your tach. If there is a green light at the bottom of your tach, it's an 84. -

Looks like fat old man Vmax. I'm 6'3" , 300 lbs, and approaching 60. I've been holding on to a Vmax wiring harness. You didn't whack a Venture harness I bet. With those filters and that exhaust, what jet sizes did you go with in the carbs? Curt
