  1. Went by the dealer's shop today and spoke to a mechanic. The guys at the counter claimed it must have had something to do with bad fuel and that the carb sync or valve adjustment couldn't have caused it. When I spoke with the mechanic he said it could also be caused by weather changes and the temperature is still quite chilly, so that is the only thing that made any sense to me. Had the bike out again today and it is running fine now with no more popcorn in the exhaust note.
  2. Had my 06 RSTD in to the local Yamaha dealer last week for the 1000 KM warranty service (bought the bike new last fall). They did a valve adjustment and a carb sync as specified in the owners manual. On the way home after picking the bike up I noticed I was getting an intermittent popping noise coming from the right side exhaust at idle. The bike ran fine otherwise at higher rpm's. This persisted for a couple of days then just after I called the dealer about the problem and was going to take the bike back to them it suddenly disappeared on it's own. Can anyone tell me if this would have been a valve timing issue or a carb sync issue? Since it has now stopped should I still be thinking about taking the bike back to the dealer?
  3. Take heart guys, it is supposed to be plus 15 in Toronto by Friday. Spring is coming! I road around a bit today, but those northerly winds were pretty nasty.
  4. I bought my 06 new (non current) last October (08). Put about three hundred miles on it before the corners started getting icy. I had to do something with the handlebars cause the shoulders got pretty sore after an hour in the saddle. Switched over to the Flanders pullback bars for the RSTD and couldn't be happier. Also went with a Mustang seat, Strebel Ear Cannon horn, LED tail light / turn signals, Yamaha passing lights, luggage rack, tool bag, and about to order the Baron handlebar tack. Just finishing the break in period and starting to explore what those higher revs can provide. Enjoy your new toy!
  5. Thanks for those pics in your last post. Now I can see what you have in mind and I think your idea has great potential. I did come across a website that was selling a fibreglass tourpack for around five hundred bucks and they also sold an adapter for the Yamaha RSTD detachable backrest system which was between two and three hundred additional bucks, so the price tag was getting pretty close to the thosand dollar mark for the complete rig. I would definitely be interested in your adapter. The problem with mounting some of the less expensive tourpacks on the Yamaha luggage rack (which attaches to the backrest mount) is that most of them carry hinges on the forward panel, so you wouldn't be able to open them with the standard set-up, as the lid would hit the backrest.
  6. Rode my wife's Suzuki C50 today. My RSTD is in the shop for the 1000 KM check over. Plus nine celcius and sunny today in Toronto. Forecast for tomorrow is 2 celcius with a windchill of minus eight (that's darn cold on any scale) with a mix of snow and rain changing over to snow by evening with one or two inches on the ground by Tuesday. When I called the shop Friday, they said my RSTD would be ready for pick up Monday afternoon. I think I'll let them store it for a couple extra days!
  7. Actually the abesence of light is caused by the extreme speed of an RSTD Midnight topping out in third gear. Lightyears ahead of all those candy coloured Ventures with all that extra Samsonite slowing them down! As for the horn mod, nice concept. I'm always in favour of redundant systems, but I have enough trouble finding the original button in a panic situation. Having to choose which one to hit would be even more confusing for this old rider. I installed the Strebel Ear Cannon on mine using instructions found on this forum. On Saturday a cager decided to attempt a right turn from the centre lane as I approached on his right. First time I had a reason to lean hard on the horn button and I noticed several pedestrians as far as a city block away turning around to see where all the noise was coming from as I rode by. Great addition for those fast RSTD's and slow candy coloured Ventures. 06RSTDRider:big-grin-emoticon:
  8. Sportster Eh! I would tell the old man if you must go Harley to minimize his insecurities about being outclassed, then you'll have to get a top of the line Electa Glide with all the trimmings like his. Make sure it's black though, to give you that nasty edge when you pull up in front of the biker bars. On second thought, how about running an ad in the Venture Riders classifieds for a new mate with a Japanese Harley. My wife ride a Suzuki C50 because she wants to!
  9. Thanks Eck. Will take another look at it this weekend.
  10. Hey, if they build it I will come. That sounds like a much more civilized method than fighting with Phillips head screws, wires, and micro switches each time. Let me know where I can get them and I'll order a few. My wife has Suzuki C50 with dual throttle cables a rear brake cable and a manual clutch cable so I have a lot more cables to lube than most others do.
  11. I will have to take a second look at it but there didn't seem to be enough adjustment on the adjuster to give the necessary slack to get the cable off the grip slot. Had a similar problem with my Suzuki C50 before this bike. Maybe I need to loosen the lower cable adjusters as well.
  12. What is the best procedure for removing the upper throttle cables from the handlebar so they can be properly lubricated?
