  1. If you bought the Yamaha OEM passing lamps, the instructions that came with them should tell you where to connect the wires. For my 06 RSTD the colour coding in the instructions was correct. If you want the passing lamps on at all times when the ignition key is on you splice the red power lead from the lamps to the "Blue" lead which emerges from the 12 pin harness connector in the headlight housing. For on with high beams only you splice the red lead to the "Yellow" lead in the headlight housing. For on with low beams only you splice the red lead to the "Green" lead in the headlight housing. This is what is stated in the OEM passing lamp instructions for a newer RSTD. If your 96 has the same coloured leads available in the headlight housing and a 12 pin harness connector you should be able to connect you power wire for the lamps (regardless of who makes them) to one of the three wires mentioned above. If your colour codes are different you will need to use a volt meter and figure out which wire has power everytime the key is on, which one only has power with the intensity switch in the low beam position, and which one only has power when it is in the high beam position. I didn't take any pictures but I am an electrician. Hope this helps!
  2. Buz, As mentioned in my PM earlier tonight, please put me down for one of your black brackets and let me know when and how you want payment as soon as it is available. I have also ordered the black tour pack (without that yellow dot) from Justin at tohptrading@gmail.com His price on the large gloss black ABS trunk with large chrome top rack, two key lock, and double seat back cushion is $144.00 plus $45.00 shipping to Canada via USPS air with tracking. So my total outlay for a detachable tour pack will be less than $600.00 CDN. Not bad! FYI, I found that other site that sells a tour pack bracket for the RSTD and some very expensive (and heavy) fibreglass tour packs. Their bracket is $269.00 but it is not a quick detachable arrangement. It looks like it is meant to permanently replace the original detachable bracket assembly. When you add up the cost of their bracket and a tour pack with all the trimmings, your into about a thousand bucks. Here is their link if you want to check out the competition: www.scootworks.com I think you have a very good product at a decent price.
  3. Many thanks folks for all the input. Looks like I'll be using the cheap stuff from now on as long as there is no pinging or knocking.
  4. I usually get my gas at the local Shell station near my home. They have three blends available with octane ratings of 87, 89, and 91. I recently noticed that the two lower ratings (87 & 89) contain ethanol, but the most expensive one with a rating of 91 specifies that it contains no ethanol. Since I got my bike last fall I have been using the middle blend. Tonight I spent a whopping $13.64 and splurged on the primo blend. Will have to see if it makes any noticeable difference after a couple of tankfuls.
  5. What octane rating do you use? Does a higher rating make a difference in the performance level and maintenance of a Second Gen or late model RSTD motor?
  6. I found another tour pack on Ebay last night that looks very similar to yours, but without the yellow dot. They have several pictures of them on the site including one that shows it is large enought to hold two helmets. It comes standard with the double cushion seat back and lock. They also offer a couple of differest top rack options. The base price for a paint ready primed pack is $89.00 but you can also order a high gloss black one for $105.00. The large top rack adds another $45.00. It looks an awful lot like yours. Maybe there is more than one dealer selling these and the people you bought from put their own yellow emblem on theirs. I will find the site on Ebay tonight and send you a link. I already sent you the fellows email address in my PM. Another thought I had on the chrome issue is you could just pre-drill four to six holes in every base plate in a set pattern in the most likely spots that would be required to mount most packs. Call it a universal mounting system and your covered. Then the buyer can mark and drill their pack to match your existing hole pattern. With regards to you pre-mounting the pack, I have the Mustang pillion seat on my bike so it would probably be preferable for me to mount the pack to your bracket at my location, just in case the larger seat interferes with the bracket and pack assembly in some way.
  7. Hair dryer, finger nail, and Goo Gone. But even good old peanut butter will assist in removing stubborn stickers!
  8. Thanks again Sonny. Had a similar experience with an order from boats.net. Had to wait about six extra weeks because one item was on backorder. Then, when they took it to the USPS the clerk double keyed the last number in my street address which turned it into a much longer street than it is. Of course good old Canada Post couldn't be bothered looking up my correct address when it made it to my street (what's that saying about neither rain nor sleet nor snow or hail will stop the mail) so they turned the parcel around and sent it all the way back down to Florida. This added two extra weeks to the delivery time before I finally got my parts.
  9. Hey Buz, Great job. Once you finalize your numbers I'm sure we can do some business. Here is an alternate thought about securing the bracket against unauthorized removal. How about a small hole through the head of the left thumb screw or in the bracket itself, and a crimped aircraft wire loop that can be looped through the helmut lock on that side of the bike? Won't stop someone with bolt cutters but will stop an opportunist in a rest stop parking lot, and act as a safety restraint should the thumb screws come loose. With regards to the chrome plating issue, I will be buying the same pack that you are using. Could the plate be pre-drilled for mounting that particular pack before it goes to the plater?
  10. I installed a Baron 3" handlebar tach on my RSTD last evening. I also wired it to the coil for the front right cylinder (looking forward while seated on the bike). One suggestion I would make is that the spade connection terminals that protrude from the epoxy potted coil assembly are different widths. The negative terminal (white wire with a dotted grey stripe on my 06 RSTD) is narrower than the positive terminal (red wire with a dotted grey stripe). The tach comes with the dual spade lug connectors as suggested in the quote above. However, these lugs do not fit firmly on the narrower negative terminal. I had visions of loosing my front right cylinder one day and having to pull the gas tank at the side of the road to reconnect this lead. I chose to cut the end off the original negative lead, connect the green wire from the tack and the negative lead coming from the bike wiring harness to an in line butt splice coupling, then connect the original ninety degree lug to the other side of the butt splice coupling. The original ninety degree lug is narrower than the one on the positive terminal, so it fits the narrow terminal on the coil much better. Doesn't matter who's tach you install, this connection issue would apply no matter what, unless you can find a narrower push on dual spade lug to match the width of the negative terminal on the coil.
  11. Same for me. I love my Flanders pullbacks. All day rides are no longer a problem and a couple of hours was about the best I could do as well before I installed them. I also went to the Mustang seat with the driver backrest, which allows me to ride without my back belt. No more sore lower back, and my co-pilot likes the pillion a lot more too.
  12. Great site Sunman. Any problems getting them to ship to us Canucks. I found another site that had good prices but they wouldn't ship north of the border. I assume since you indicated you have bought from them that this isn't a problem. Their price on the OEM saddlebag guards is twenty bucks less than the best price I have found elsewhere to date.
  13. I assume you have the Baron 2" sub sonic mini tach. The one I ordered is the 3" Baron Bullet tach, and it doesn't look like it is compatible with that mount. I think I have a spot right next to the front brake reservoir on my Flanders handlebars that the 3" unit will fit and will give good visibility. Thanks for the info on the reservoir mount however. Most of the new toys I buy for my RSTD are purchased based on feedback found on this site (like yours).
  14. My son in law works for a company that builds the frames for the Honda plant in Alliston Ontario and they have recently had their work week cut back to thirty-two hours in spite of the fact that Honda was in much better shape than the big three when the recession started to close in. I don't think any company or anyone in the auto industry is immune to what is happening worldwide right now in the manufacturing sectors.
  15. I recently bought mine at outdoornetwork.com in Florida. Their price was $135.08 U.S. for the same part number. They specialize in boat parts but if you punch in the correct Yamaha accessory part number they will provide it and usually at a slightly lower price than most bike shops.
  16. The trike looks great, but I'm not sure about that thingy your towing behind you! Is gas mileage that big a problem?
  17. I ride some of the same areas as you do. I took my windshield off for the first time on Friday and ran up the 427 early in the morning, around town during the day, and along the QEW in the afternoon. It was a bit breezey and I have to say I felt like I had an elephant on my chest on the highways from all that wind pressure at 120 KM / HR. Got behind a couple of large transports on the QEW and along with a head wind and their backwash I had to keep a firm grip on the grips. Don't know how those Harley chopper guys can do it all the time and continue to look so cool and relaxed. Based on my windshieldless experiences I would think that your upper body probably provides more wind resistance than a smooth curved windshield when it comes right down to it. I only have 1,450 KM's on my new engine so far, so I'm not even going to think (or worry) about gas milage at this point, but my wife and I did a two up ride to the Forks of the Credit and Erin yesterday (mostly at 80 - 100 KM / HR) and I did set the trip meter. We topped up the tank before we left and we put just over 100 KM on the trip meter. Upon our return my gas guage had lost one bar. So overall, I don't think we did too badly.
  18. Gee Naturbar your bike looks a lot like mine! The bracket is looking good. Realize it is a work in progress, but I think your on the right track. I have the Mustang pillion seat on my bike which I think is a little bigger than the stock Yamaha seat but it looks like there would still be suffient space there. If you need any dimensions for future fitment issues, just let me know. How does it lock in place on the rear pins? Once you have the final design would you consider offering a chromed version? The tour pack your using is the same one I was considering. Are you happy with the unit so far?
  19. I just ordered a Baron tach for my RSTD. The one I ordered appears to have a handlebar bracket but the web site info indicated you can loosen the base and adjust the angle to compensate for the bar angle. Did you guys order one what was made to mount on a flat spot or did you improvise?
  20. So maybe young parents with cranky newborns should invest in a Venture!!!!!!!!!
  21. Thanks for the suggestions V7. Whatever it was, it seems to have corrected itself after a couple of rides. I did have what sounded like missing on one cylinder very briefly during my last ride of the fall in mid November and it is still pretty chilly here, so maybe the cold air has something to do with it as the mechanic suggested.
  22. Thanks for the heads up on the price reduction. First time I checked them out the price was about $115.00 U.S. and us Canucks have to add another 20 points to that. After I read your posting I quickly placed an order. I decided to use the money I saved and put it towards a Baron Bullet Tach. Needing a tach to use in conjunction with the Carbtune was the only excuse I needed!
  23. Maybe I am misinterpreting what your saying and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can still rest your hand on the throttle grip when your on cruise control. I've heard this mentioned in a previous thread. I believe the throttle is controlled by a separate cable in the splitter box when your on cruise control so the throttle grip doesn't actually turn and you won't interfere with the throttle if you choose to rest your hand there. I bought the Stilletto ends for mine and they do have about half the weight of the original end weights, but no vibration problems or numb fingers for me so far!
