Shifter....
83VR3711 replied to 83VR3711's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Would I need to drain the motor oil for any of this or better yet, how far can I go into this without draining the oil? The outside pivot points are ok. -
Ok, I think there may be something wrong with my shifter. It does not want to change gears when at a stop. It will only shift when moving and that is only sometimes. I do not believe it is the cluch, it appears to be working fine. When I am in neutral and try to shift to 1st, the shifter goes all of the way down but does engage anything:puzzled:. If I shift up to second, sometimes it will go, but not always. It almost feels like the shifter is not connected to something. It will let you push and pull it as far as you want. Sometimes it will not let you back into Neutral once you got into second or above. Does anybody know where I should start to look? I was unable to find anything in the book, though I was able to find a parts break down of it. Please help, this is the last thing keeping me off of the road.... Thank you, Clay P.S. rocking the bike does not help.

Thank you for all of your tips. I have resolved the issue with the leaking carbs. I wound up removing all of the carb covers and removing/ reinstalling the o-rings. I them replaced the covers onto a different carb than it was removed from. All is well (still working on the cables -

That is a good question. I will probably pull the carbs back off again tonight and take another look. Also, I had one heck of a time trying to get the throttle cables back on? I gave up on the "throttle up" cable and had to rig it up. I tried every method I could think of and still wound up half a hair too short..... -
Well, I got the carbs put back together and re-installed on the bike (my first time). After I got the bike put back together, I decided to take her for a spin and she ran like a dream:usa:. She did have a hard time idling though. When I got back from around the block, I seen a puddle of fuel on the ground:yikes:. Come to find out, I had accidently left the #1 carb drain open. Easy fix....until I took closer look, I noticed that the drain line was not the only thing leaking fuel. Appearently all 4 carbs were leaking fuel and I know that I put the covers back on tight when I re-assembled them:soapbox:. I guess my question is.....how often do you have to replace the O-ring that seals the cover to the carb?

Another thing....I thoroughly went through all of the carbs and I found a couple of dis heartning things.... (1) When I opened each of the carbs, there was rust in them (not on them, but them). If the fuel filter is working properly, then how is this stuff getting from the tank to the carbs? Is another filter somewhere in the carbs that is supposed to catch this stuff? (2) When I removed the diaphrams to inspect them, two of them had some black soot or something under the rubber? It was some very gritty stuff. How would I prevent that in the future? *NOTE: the carb wall are perfect. No scratches of any sort. -

I think I may have finally figured out the problem. I finally broke down and pulled the carbs. Come to find out, when the mechanic cleaned them last he forgot to put the screw (#28 on parts list for carb) that goes into the Main Nozzle of the #2 Carb back in. he had just set in the nozzle without screwing it down. Do you think that this could have been the root of all of my heart ache or should I keep looking? -

Thank you, I will give it a try. That is basically the way I figured it would work. I was unable to get them to seperate by prying and figured I was doing something wrong. I will give the hairdryer idea a shot. Thanks again. -

Hello all. Thank you for the tips. I just picked up a set of diaphrams from Safetyguy:missingtooth:. I was trying to seperate the rubber from the slide (to prepare for the replacements) :missingtooth:and I could not figure out how to do it:bang head:. I wound up tearing the daphram. What is the trick:think:? Also I had read somewhere on the site about replaceing the white washer inside of the slide assembly with a #6 washer....The washer was too big... Did I buy the wrong washer or did I just miss something somewhere? Thanks again for your help. -
I have two questions about the diaphrams.... Question 1: I took a look at two of my diaphrams and one wasn't too bad. it was starting to get a little thin in a few areas, but not bad. It had some sort of lubrication on it, some sort of grease. The other diaphram has worn holes in it and no lubrication, it was dry. Is there some sort of lube that is supposed to be on them? Question 2: where is a place to get a decent price on 4 diaphrams? Thanks, Clay

Stuck float? slider not moving
83VR3711 replied to coltrain's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had the same problem with mine. I just pushed slider back with a screw driver a couple of time and it has been good ever since. Good luck, Clay -
After almost making it to work, I came to a stop light and tried to down shift on the way to the light. When I stopped, it was still in 2nd. I tried to down shift to first but it wouldn't have it. I tried to rock it and shift up and back down again, but it still would not go into first. Stupid me, just pushed a little harder and it popped and went all the way down (like I broke something). It did go into first though. After that when I shift to first, it makes a grinding noise before it goes into gear. I do not hear this when I shift into 2nd and up. Did I break something?

So I got her towed home. WHen she arrived, she fired up and I drove her into the garage. I then commenced to draining the bowls repetitivley until all of the black stuff was gone from all 4 carbs. I then pulled the fuel line from the back of the fuel pump and turned the petcok on. She had full gravity flow through the fuel filter and the petcock screen. Put it all back together and fired up. All seemed good at first until it started loading up again after a few minutes with the back firing and the inability to increase above 3000 RPMs. SO is my next step to tear into the carbs again? Also the fuel pump is operating correctly. After it dies, and you turn the kill switch off, the fuel pumps makes the "full" sound instead of the clicking noise when it is filling the carbs. -

So......how do I clean the tank and what parts would I need to order when I replace/fix the petcock? Where (besides the dealer) do you think would be the best place to order the parts from (keeping cost in mind)? -

Ok....I drained the fuel tank along with the bowls. I went and bought the 18mm socket from Lowes and it didnt fit. So I wound up just cleaning the ones i had and put them back it. She fired right up and i actually got to ride her to work for the first time.. and then the fun started...... About 5 miles down the road, she died at a red light at a very busy intersection and i was first in line. Luckily I was able to get her started just as it turned green and I was on my way. I was so excited. I got her on the freeway and was up to 70-75 mph. Took the exit (about 15 miles down the road) pulled up to the red light and she died. She could not have picked a worst spot to quit. I got her on the sidewalk and tried to start her. She did start right up, but could not get the rpms above 2800. Any more than that and she would flood out and die. She is still on the side of the road. I will tow her home tonight. I am confused on the problem cuz she is giving mixed symptoms. first she would start and get to 2800 RPMs and start to pop and backfire just before she died. Then after a few more trys, she was acting like she was getting no fuel. she would turn and turn. almost catch but then didnt. My first stop will be to replace the fuel filter. When I drained the tank, I drained it throught the filter. If that doesn't help, then I guess I will tear out the carbs and try another cleaning. Any tips to check prior to a carb pull? -

I will be heading to Lowes today. I finally got the tank and carb bowls drained...the tank came out completely clean. I can't that for the bowls though. I got some black trash out of the #1,3, and 4 carbs. I will put some fresh gas in it and maybe it may improve something or atleast it couldn't hurt -

LOL, no I have not been running with out the air cover. I am using the Champion Copper plugs because I cannot find a socket for the NGKs that will fit in between the cylinders. She idles smooth, right at 1000 RPMs. cold and hot. Upon start up though, I run it at full chock and it instantly is loaded up. I have to get it over 3000 RPMs to blow out the excess fuel. I hope this info helps... -

I wouldn't have imagined that bad diaphrams would cause it to basically flood itself while running, but I will definitly give them another look. -

it was just recently cleaned by a mechanic. Just got it running since. Should I just keep dealing with it until it slowly works its way through the HEET and Seafoam? The carbs are close on their syn but are not dead on. I was told to get it close and get some miles on it before I get it professionally synced. I had a tear in one diaphram but put some silicone on it and now it seems to have more power than before. -

plugs are running hot and have about 55miles on them. I am currently running seafoam. Would bad throttle cables have anything to do with it? -
I finally gother back on the road and now she is loading up. If I get below 2000 RPMs, then it iwll load up and die. Does anyone have any ideas? I have already restricted the fuel flow from the petcock. I put the petcock half on/half off. It does not seem to help.

Not sure on whether this is a good deal..... I have found a 2001 Yamaha Silverado for $450. It looks great from the pics. The down side is that it has flood damage (salt water) from Hurricane Ike. Is it worth the time and effort to buy a salt water flooded scoot?

Here is the deal, I have tried everything I can think of and still cannot get the front left cylinder (number 2, I think) to fire. Here is what I have done so far: 1. changed the wires 2. changed the plug 3. swapped the coil with known good 4. drained the bowl and verified that there is fuel flow 5. checked/cleaned connectors from the TCI 6. cleaned every connector that I could find. 7. Cleaned the carbs. *I have not re-synced them (would that cause one cylinder not to fire?) The other three cylinders are running fine. I just am not sure where else to look. Everything appears to be in order....the way I verify that cylinder one is not firing, is the water test. I let the bike idle to normal operating temp and then spray water on all 4 exhausts. All of them evaporate instantly except the fron left. It just runs down the tube and evaporartes as it goes. The tube gets hot, but not nearly as hot as the other three. Please help.....
