Does anyone know where I could purchase a new seat covering for a 86-93 first gen? Are the available or do I need to take it out to a shop to be recovered?

Improving gas mileage...
hlange replied to 5bikes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have an '85 that does not have the adjustable needles. The spacer was.098" and I replaced it with two #6 washers that measured .052" overall. The best I ever got before was 34 mpg, normally around 30. I have her on a trip from La Crosse WI to Ashtabula OH and I have averaged 42 mpg over the 1100 miles so far (most of that at 70 mph). No surge, runs same temp as before and starts the same as before. THANK YOU!! -

Did you put the rubber plugs inside the float bowl back into the correct holes? -
How do you take apart a diaphram
hlange replied to BnkrBill's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I got mine from this vendor about two weeks ago. Took me longer to remove the plastic then to replace the diaphrams. I spent $110.01 to get mine. I had been bidding every week for about 6 weeks and always getting outbid, finally up it to get them. I know that some paid less then I did and that's ok. I paid what I thought they were worth, still a deal since I paid $27.50 each instead of the next best price of $65. Now I know that all four diaphrams on my bike are good. -
Running with the airbox off will make a big difference.

Tested the wire without the resister from the battery to the dash connection and it appears good (0 omhs). Rechecked the resister setup and it still shows the battery icon and the warning light. All other functions work.

OK, 1985 Venture Royale, 46,000 miles Battery level lcd always shows indication and red light flashes. I have tried the resister (1.1 and 2.2), taken the dash apart and checked all solder connections on the first board, cleand all connectors. Still shows indication. All other lcd indicators function properly. The only thing that I noticed on the board was that the solder for a black transister looked a little funky, all others looked good. I resoldered the connection to board joints anyways to ensure that thy were good. Ideas?

My youngest daughter has come up with a couple of what I figure are absolute truisms or perfect answers over the years. Two winters ago, when she was 12, I was doing that old winter biker thing of dreaming of what we were going to do when summer rolled around. I asked her where she would want to ride to, you know, "Do you want to go see this?" or "Do you want to go see that?" type of thing. She could not come up with any particular place she wanted to see, and trying to narrow it down, I finally asked "Well, which direction do you want to go, east, west, north, south?" She answered "well, all of them." I think that it was a perfect answer. The other time she set me straight was when I took my 79 Triple down to the gas station in the spring to put some gas in it in March of 2005. It was 34F degrees out and the gas staion was only about 4 blocks away. I didn't ask if she wanted to go with as it was such a short ride and it was COLD out. I got back and my wife told me that the daughter was ticked at me for not asking. I told my daughter that it was too cold for her to ride and she gave me "the look", put her hands on her hips and stated, "It's not too cold if you dress right." I had to admit she was right and told her I would never again assume that she didn't want to ride and I would aways have to ask first.

engine cuts out at 6000 RPM
hlange replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It does sound electrical. If it were me, I would pull the TCI out and bake it, and then crack it open and check for loose solder joints. While it is out, I would also clean any and all electrical connections that I could reach including those under the left side cover. -
There is no PCV valve installed on a Yamaha XS750. The crankcase breather hose is open to the crankcase so that air may flow both directions depending on the conditions. If you install a PCV valve then the engine may suck oil when it cools down. A light amount of misting, "fog", "smoke" from the crankcase breather hose is normal. You should be able to judge the condition of rings using a compression tester.

On qusetion #2: DO NOT PLUG THAT HOSE!!! It is the crankcase vent. Just make sure that it runs higher then the crankcase and if you want you can install a vent filter on it it keep vermin out. A minor amount of "smoke" coming from it is normal. You may find that you are running richer with the pods then the stock airbox, especially if you are running an after market exhaust. On question #3: http://www.yamaha-triples.org/library/misc/750sf/750sf_cable.pdf shows the cable routing for the XS750SF, yours will be simular. I would keep it as close to stck as possible to make future troubleshooting easier. You may find the XS750/850 website helpful. http://www.yamaha-triples.org/portal.asp

Things to do: Replace the fuse block. Replace the battery. Clean the carbs 3 times. Disconnect, clean and grease all electricial connectors. Lube the cables. Change the fluids, including brake fluid. Check the petcocks to ensure the towers are there and to make sure they don't leak by. Replace the float valves in the carbs so you don't get GasOil. Change the wires with solid core and change the plugs.
