Hi all! I'm about to get some R1 calipers and am trying to find some front rotors. Has anyone used the EBC md2096's? Also, someone had mention early vmax rotors will work. Will they work with the r1 calipers? They seem really thick too. 7.5 mmish? Several cheap sets of those floating around. Thanks everyone!

Nothing illegal! (sadly for me) Yeah, missed the date. Haha. Still a good thread!

I would be curious to hear how this ends, Dan. A decent mechanic friend mechanically "synced" the carbs a couple years ago. MPG was awesome! Went from upper 30's to solid mid, sometimes upper 40's. About 2mos after the carb going through, MPG dropped back down to upper 30's and there's goo all over the front, left carb boot. Still runs and idles great but mileage sucks. I should add that, at the same time my friend was going through the carbs, I resiliconed the holes in the carb diaphrams. Thought my fix had given way but they are still nice and air tight. MPG is a real drag. W/trailer down to 35. I have a carbtune now I'm going to use for the next syncing (or sinking).

I'm with YammerDan. One of the rear exhausts on our 86' has a manifold leak. Really easy to confuse with valve train noise. First time I heard it I got real paranoid. Already done the collector fix. The noise is so subtle and I'm just too lazy to get into the rear headers. Will live with for now. Yours sounds like a good running motor to me!

A quick note on the plastics: They're certainly not the most resilient after 25 some odd years. When I stripped all the parts off our 86' a couple weeks it was like dumping 10 bags of scrabble pieces all over the garage. Sucks, because often the parts that break are a mount or something. The good news is is that all these parts repair real well with fiberglass. I wrapped glass all along the edges where the various mounts were and any other weak looking edges. In fact, at this point the bike is at least 1/4 fiberglass. Holds up real well and easy to work with. Giant pieces that broke off I replaced with either cardboard or some rogue plastic I had laying around. Covered it all in glass. Strong as heck.

Awesome bike. We have the same one, brown and all (although I'm currently painting it black). Bought it with 50k We've put 32k punishing miles on this bike, pulling the heaviest trailer through the worst weather conditions. I've dropped it at least 5 times. It's a beast! Definitely one of my favorite motorcycles ever! Just keeps on giving and not to ridiculous to maintain.

ruh roh.... smoking a bit...
jimmyenglish replied to 86venturejay's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Adjust the valves. We got our 86' w/50k on it. I was sure the previous owner never adjusted them because he is a total loser. It's really not that bad and goes quicker than you think. When I checked at 50k every valve was out of adjustment. I erred on the loose side and when I rechecked just a few weeks ago at 82k (quite suprisingly) all 16 were perfectly in adjustment. I measured each one at least 4 times putting a turn or two on the crank between each just to be super sure. Probably not related to your smoking issue but a very important maintenance procedure nonetheless. Worst part is getting all the crap out of the way. -
Wow MillionMile 140mph? Man, that's awesome. We've pulled ours (8" wheels) up to 90 but usually roll around 65-75. Mileage seems to take a terrific hit passed 75ish.

So many great replies! I settled on the E3's. Going to mount them this week. Thanks for the polishing advice! I wound up sandblasting and polishing them. Coated with por15 glisten. Man, that stuff is badass! Not as mirrorlike as I wanted but they look way better than they did.

Hi everyone. In the process of a pretty stout going over of my wife and I's 86'. We've had those middle of the road IMC intercoms on our agv modulars for several years, maybe 30k through all the elements. THey still work great. They're the ones that have a firewire looking pinout to the coily 5pin. I would love to that pinout too, specifically if anyone's integrated those into a different configuration. Then I started thinking, Has anyone overhauled the entire audio/cb/intercom? Maybe out of a 2nd gen? My nightmare concern is maintaining all the ext. thumb button control and all. I'd love to drop another $100 mega flexible, bluetooth wal mart stereo in the hole but I want to be able to control with the existing. I like that my wife can adjust all her stuff and the radio as well. Then what about the CB? We live by that thing! Has anyone done an extensive audio/media (inc. CB) overhaul that would integrate nicely with the headsets? Great forum!!

Reserve Tank Question
jimmyenglish replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Fabulous thread! Especially considering I am an expert on the topic. My wife accuses me of playing the "gas game." In Indiana in 09'. Had gone about 150 miles. Knew we had to stop at the next exit. Closed! Ran out of gas at the next exit off ramp end. Only had to push about 1/4 but let me tell you fully laden with trailer is beastly! That was 165miles. Usually not that good esp. w/trailer. Just passed 4.5 gallons and it's out. Waste of the other half gal! Biggest drawback to this bike is the range. Even without trailer. Especially out west, you're always eyeing a gas station. Hwy 50 in NV? You WILL be stopping in Austin wether you filled up on either end! I've thought long and hard how to put a bigger tank on this thing. Great thread. -
Wow! So much great info. I find some of these numbers quite amazing. I'm leaning towards the E3's. I had Bridgestone SPitfire II's prior. The rear went about 12k. Guess that's not too bad. We ride pretty conservatively. No wheelies or blistering accel. I probably wouldn't notice a lot of handling improvements one tire vs another. Perhaps I've had the pressure a little low (the Spitfire says 41). Usually run around the low 40's. I'll jack it up this next go around. Now, who's got some great wheel polishing advice? Thanks again everybody. Such a bevy of info here!

Hi everyone, I read somewhere on here about a guy using FJR rotors up front on his MKII. I have an 86' and all the rotors are shot. Specifically, which year FJR rotors fir? Has anyone bought the rear from perfectbrakes.com? In the process of delinking, overhauling the whole brake system. Trying to sift through all these different years of compatability. Thanks!

Thanks! Good to know. I had a Kenda K673F which went about 16k before it started cupping all to hell. I will check out the Kruz. What about a car tire?

Hi all, great forum as always. I'm in the process of changing tires again. I have an 86' that my wife and I ride heavy and hard pulling a trailer. We'll do 6-10k/year. I've been through most brands of tires and would like to find a rear that would last more than 6-7k. Is there any car tire that will fit? What's the longest lasting non-car tire I can put on? Seems I've spent a fortune in tires in the 50k or so we've put on riding this bike. Too back breaking to be changing so often. Thanks! J

Centerstand removal
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ok. I'm an idiot. 2 bolts. Thanks again! -
I like using the centerstand on my 86' Venture. When packing/unpacking the trailer/bike combo it's very handy. Of course, getting the bike on the stand is beastly but I'm a strong guy and am well rehearsed even fully laden. Anyway..... About a month ago I was putting it up on the stand and the foot pushing part just bent. My question is how do I get the centerstand off? I plan on welding a big old, some sort of repair. Thanks in advance. Great forum!

I tried the brush mod with my old starter; no love. Bought a new vmax one on ebay shipped for $90. Would anyone like my old starter? I like the idea of someone recycling it.

external 12v power supply idea help please
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I thought the alternator would be enough to charge the extra battery while we're driving down the road as the voltmeter always reads strong(that's the only time the extra battery would be hooked to the bike, to charge). Solar's neat but too slow and expensive. Probably just tote a small battery charger around and charge when we come across some electricity. Thought it would be cool to know it's charged when we get to the next site. Thanks again! -
Hi everyone. My wife and I pull a trailer when we go on our long trips. We camp most of the time and like to bring as much stuff as possible. I want to get a midsize, deep cycle battery to tote around in the trailer to power things around our campsite. I have a modest 350watt power inverter which is ample for what we need (we run mostly led xmas lights, phone chargers, small lcd TV, small laptop and a laser kaleidoscope. Also various 12v items. Not all at the same time). However, I don't like the idea of it running off the bike battery all night. Which leads me to my next question.. How could I rig it up to have the bike charging the external battery while we're riding? Is it as simple as just hooking it up in parallel with the main battery? Thanks everyone!

If you're hell bent on SC go to Charleston. Between Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island and the city itself, you have a bevy of great things to do. Tons of great history, beaches, restaurants and bars. Me and all my Myrtle buds rode down there all the time. The view going over the Ravenel bridge is awesome.

I lived in Myrtle Beach from 97'-2009. I can tell you for a fact that what little is left of bikeweek is hardly worth going. Most of the leftover action is down south in Murrells Inlet/Garden City area. There is absolutely NOTHING left in Myrtle Beach proper. A small amount in N. Myrtle Beach but that too is doomed. Harley was going to sponsor a small rally this spring in N. MB but backed out a couple months ago because the residents were being poo poo. It started with Myrtle Beach doing everything they could to keep the bikers away after the 2008 rally. No vendors, a city wide helmet law, bans on pipes etc. While it's true the following black bike week was the nail in the coffin in 2008, the council voted to ban all of it. It's a real shame because I personally know a ton of people (bar owners, restaurants, bands) who lost their asses last spring(and the fall rally too) and will do so again this year. So everybody circumvented MB and went south or north. Fine. Now the county is getting involved and putting the kabosh on vendor permits outside MB as well. The locals want "selective" tourism. The town is a joke. Now the cops. Myrtle Beach and the surrounding Horry County has TONS of cops. They will bust you for anything! Please don't think I'm exaggerating! Like i said, I lived there 12 long, brutal years. They put up random road blocks all the time. They're ON THE PROWL looking for excuses to write a ticket. A good riding buddy of mine and Desert Storm vet got busted last Feb for having a 6" crack in his windshield. In 2008, while riding my BICYCLE home from work a state cop gave me a ticket for riding 20 feet down the wrong side of the road. You should have seen how fast he chased me! I had to go to court and pay $75. It is like a police state. This is turning into a rant and I apologize. It's very frusterating because the town is a shadow of it's former self and used to be cool. It's been ruined by the politicians, and to a large degree, the locals themselves. It's practically a ghost town. Personally, I would never go back. THEY DON'T WANT YOU THERE! If you have any specific questions, please ask.

Considering it's pretty much 2 to 1 front to back, I always mix and match. I used to think the matched pair thing was important but, personally, I think it's a bunch of hype. As long as they're both in good condition I've never been able to tell. Recently, I'd gone through 2 rears and the front was finally shot too and I replaced them with a pair of Spitfire II's. Mostly because they were super cheap and have raised whites. Good luck!

Here's a pic of my shinko tourmaster after 8.5k. Mind you, the tire was still round despite what the pictures show. Also 7k of this was fully laden, 2up and pulling a very heavy trailer. Rode good though and the price was kick ass!. GO figure?http://www.kilik.com/shinko_tourmaster_rear1.jpghttp://www.kilik.com/shinko_tourmaster_rear2.jpg
