Hi guys. thanks for writing. I posted a video. It may or may not play. http://www.motopalz.org/86venturefork.3gp Demonstrates the sliding of the fork tubes. Mike, thanks for the info. Perhaps I should just rip them apart and start over. Sure hope I can get this sorted. This has been a real bummer because the bike is just a nightmare to ride like this. Thanks again guys!

Hi everyone, so I'm trying to relieve the insane stiffness from the front end on my 86' that I've just mildy overhauled. I'm having a hell of a time dialing this in I have Progressive springs and the block of plates from Skydoc. I've dissassembled everything and there is no binding with the forks whatsoever. One thing I find very curious is, even with the forks hanging in the air and no wheel attached, they are VERY hard to compress. Even the weight of the bike barely compresses them. They decompress fine. THen, when I drain the oil out, they slide perfectly. I'm starting to wonder if I need to put the AD's back on? I just returned from a 3500ish mile ride so I think the springs are broken in. I don't think it's a matter of too much oil because a lot of it blew out in the first 100 because I guess I put the 13.5 oz in and that's too much? Also, when I drained each leg, maybe half cup came out of each. Irony is, I go for a ride on my 1975 Kawasaki S3 w/horribly pitted forks and ancient springs and it is a FAR smoother ride. Yeah, it's mush but smooth. What could I be missing here? Thanks!

My wife and I have been using the IMC's since 2009 and about 25k of miles. They're pretty good overall (especially for the price). The fireiwire style plug developed a short so I only have one ear and IMC wouldn't sell me just the plug. They insisted I buy the whole assembly. Wires coming out of the helmet are flimsy. We use with modular helmets and I usually have mine open all the time. More bass would be nice. Would buy again.

Hi everyone, just completed a 4k ride with the R1 upgrade, Vmax rotors, stainless lines and EBC HH pads. Wow, what a diff. However, I can really notice the limitations of the stock, front master cylinder when leaning on them. What's the upgrade for the master cylinder? Also, has anybody come up with a fork spring solution other than the progs? I just put them on before the trip (block off plates, AD's removed) and once most of the oil blew passed the seals, they mellowed a little. Still, I'm not liking them at all. Way too stiff. I look down at the forks and unless I really lean on them or hit a huge bump, they don't compress at all! I put progs on my 92' BMW K75 back in 2006 and had the exact same experience. I have no spacers installed for preload at all. I would think a two stage spring would be awesome. Perhaps cutting the progs down and adding something softer in the bottom? Has anybody come up with a better solution? Perhaps I don't have them dialed in correctly but even with no oil at all they're too stiff. I was using 10wt. Also, I'm sure it's not the weight of the bike. I had the bike and trailer fully laden weighed on our last night: Bike = 933lbs, trailer = 435lb. Tounge weight is around 20lbs. I'm 190 and my wife is 145. Still seemed incredibly rigid. Thanks everyone! Great forum!

Windshield Replacement
jimmyenglish replied to stanG's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I too, bought the same one for our 86'. I had no installation probs and just completed a 4k ride where it was a joy. For the $, I think it's a great deal. -
Thanks everybody for the input and especially thanks to Saddlebum! Man was I freaking out! Starter switch was fine (dealt with that years ago), power to fuse (both sides fine). Looks like the computer thing croaked. Wired straight to fuse holder. Running lights have never been so bright. In fact, I'm going to leave the fix. Scarier thing was the left bolt that holds the frame together was holding on by about 3 threads and had somehow backed out from the safety. Yikes! That scared me way more than the lights. Divine intervention? THanks again everybody! What a great group.

Hi guys, what is the best adhesive to use to reapply the yamaha and venture royale emblems? Seems like the factory stuff was awesome and I'm afraid I'll lose them with this double sided tape I was pondering. Thanks!

843.251.7789 Hi everyone. On big trip. Running lights out. Stuck in parking lot. Power at fuse is good. I desperately need someone who could possibly explain where else to look. Help! 86' Venture

Just put my 86' back together and one of my favorite features, the trunk light seems to have croaked. Oddly, the hazards don't work. Fuses fine. Are they related? Thanks!

Hey everyone, great forum as always. This is a cool place. Tomorrow I'm finally leaving for my 5th Annual Ben Kilik Memorial Ride. I'm going to do 30 of these total. Anyway, it's a killer journey every year spanning at least 2 weeks. I have a link to my friends website that has a rough outline of the route. It would be great to see any and all of you anywhere along the way. http://www.paulstocum.com I write an extensive blog about it which I as yet haven't started. I've been bowled over by the extent of ripping the bike and trailer to pieces to paint, repair, maintain, upgrade etc. Man what a job! So I wanted to publicly thank everybody for their awesome advice. I delinked the brakes. R1 calipers, ditched antidives (thanks Skydoc!), stainless lines, Vmax rotors, EBC rear rotor, HH pads, Dunlop E3's, final dirve off 09' with 10k (gorgeous), windshield, upgraded driving lights (w/parade mode, my personal favorite!) new trailer tires and completely disassembled and painted black. The bike rides great. Hate the progs but maybe they'll mellow. Stops like mother! I swear I could lock up both wheels and send myself hurling. Dunlops totally rock. I'll put a link up to my extensive blog (not nearly as good as Jack Reipe but I can dream!) for anyone that's interested and if anybody wants to tag along it'd be great to see you! We tend to camp 2/3 of the time. Give a text or call. Thanks for all the invaluable advice. I'd be totally screwed otherwise! Cheers, John K

I put a HID on back in 2009'. Bought two (2xballast, 2x bulb) on eBay for $50. Ditched the low beam and use the high beam as on/off. Just a subtle tinge of blue. Ballast plugs in light socket and I tote a reg H4 bulb as backup. That was 25k ago. Matches up nicely to my 10w,LED driving lights (which are color changing and use a summed white for driving). I love the HID!

Block plate design.....FAIL!
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's a trick idea Salty. However, since I'm ignorant to much of this, what is the difference between having the EAD thing whatever it is, air suspension combined with [insert preferred oil weight] and that ? How would one dial in all 3? -

jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
True that. Especially when I got home and noticed the NEW tire was covered in oil. Oh man. The E3's are great though and R1's huge diff. Whiplash inducing stopping power! I tried it out good on some of these insane hillsides in Tacoma. It's so much more like a regular bike now (minus the rolling, kinetic ad for Bel-Ray. Thanks guys! Works well as a moisturizer too). -

Yeah, I want too as well. I figured it's just a little plate and weld delve into my fabrication side. Obviously it was a hard landing. Face first. EPIC FAIL! -
Time to discuss the 2013 International Rally
jimmyenglish replied to Freebird's topic in Watering Hole
Haha. Could you imagine? If you were one of those mega hardcore, mileage dudes, you could rent a huge space on a freighter and just ride laps all day. Maybe haul ass some days, bag some good miles (knots) so you can have the ocassional long weekend. If you had the entire freighter/tanker (and $5zil+) to yourself you could build a radical, fake town. You could even have some impressive straightaways sweeping upstairs, 3-4 stories to the poop deck. Then have a section of containers on one end stacked all weird for the trials guys. Endless options. I'll bet you'd have a million bikers wanting to ride that way trans continent. Booked solid. "Hey International Motorcyle Riding Badasses! Ride ALL your miles ALL the way!! I'll bet $5mil would get you started. Great idea. I'm going to think about that all night.- 101 replies

Block plate design.....FAIL!
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's the bad side of the plate. The other side is actually glass smooth. Certainly not 1/4" thick though and no o ring. It has a noring. Haha. Not funny as I'm blasting down the hwy, oddly licking my lips thinking it's sprinkling. My glasses are all speckled. Taste's weird. "There goes the Village Idiot," my neighbors think as I go by. Oh well, somebody has to do it. I pondered for a sec if it was too thin. Ugh. Mission Abort. Thanks for writing! I'll check into alternatives. Oddly enough, today I rode probably 20 miles through bad urban roads, hills and some light hwy. I drained the rest of the oil out last night and aside from the squeaking of the springs, It rode nice. Very firm. Cheers! -
Hi guys, so I'm smoke testing my prog springs, R1 rotors, EBC HH's front and rear, new rear EBC. I thought I'd follow everyone's lead and ditch the power robbing AD's. I'd talked to Skydoc and I know he's busy now so I thought I'd fashion a couple of my own. Cut out some steel and lined the opening with gasket maker. Sat overnight. Loaded up prog springs and 13.5oz 10wt each leg tightened everything up. Dropped off center stand and SPLAT! I was wearing at least $6 of my $10 fork oil. Blasted out from the block plates. I had those things cranked down! I should have taken a picture so I could nominate myself for "Worst Bel-Ray Rep Of The Year." Even worse after I rode 8 miles. I'm starting to assume the o rings are necessary? I hate to tote the AD's around just to act as a cover Has anybody else made any? What's the key? Thanks! (I know this is pretty ugly but I'm kinda in a hurry as I'm going to Germany next year and am not sure what kind of space I'm going to have.)

Carb mount thing
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hmmm. Now I don't know. Bike runs and idles fine. This joint in pic was the only one covered in goo after about 15k. Front left. This is post cleaning. Guess I'll keep an eye on it and see where it begins. -

The wife and I will be in Germany for the next 3 years starting in Jan so my vote is with Trader. Make it an "International" and have it in Heidelberg! I know that would be an incredible stretch but imagine how awesome!- 101 replies

It was hard for me to spend the $ for the adaptapter but we've had it on there through a good 30k or so and no leaks. Several oil changes. so much easier. Worth it headache saved I think.

Carb mount thing
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The parts fiche calls it a "carburator joint." $45!!! Turns out all of mine have cracks. Anyone have a source for some good used ones? -
Hi everyone, Just noticed the carb mount, throat thing on on the front left cyl is cracked. That would explain all the goo. What are these called? Can they be fixed? Looks like a little epoxy might do it maybe. Does anybody have any they would like to sell? Thanks!
-
Very interesting topic! I have tried what seems like every single epoxy there is and eventually the plastic breaks again. I've read about the plastic welder before. How is the longevity of the repair? Personally, I've had great success with fiberglass. As long as the paint is removed and the surface is roughed up I've not had any of it come undone. I've even remade most of the tabs, screwholes etc that all eventually seem to crarck. Of course, it's disasterously messy but a very resilient repair.

Brake pad opinions please...
jimmyenglish replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Great info guys. I'm going to get the ebc's. Thanks again! -
Hi everyone! My major maintenence project on my 86' is coming along and today I got my R1 calipers. So now my question is which pads? I like the cleanliness of the cermics but is this going to halve the life of my $200+ new rear rotor? In the past I would by pads all willy nilly but since I'm starting with mostly new stuff (R1 calipers, delinked brakes, new rotors, SS lines and E3's) I would like to monitor the wear better and overall just start with the best. We don't ride fast but pull a very heavy trailer. Thanks everyone!
