oil pressure light came on
raceman62race replied to mother's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I bought my wife a 93 Virago 1100. Occationally, the oil light comes on and it concerns me. Is it a level light on the Virago as well or is it a pressure light? The only way I can keep it from coming on is to keep the oil level about 3/4 way up the site glass Thanks -
Fuel Valve Position
raceman62race replied to StarQ's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I've ridden and owned several scoots and I have never turned my valve off and I have never had an issue. But I can how it would be an issue if anything went wrong. -
What mufflers are you running
raceman62race replied to Deacon's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I run completely stock RK's and I like them very much. Slightly louder than stock but not too loud. Got a mint set at a Harley dealer in Athens GA called Cycle World of Athens for $40.00. Ordered the powder coated adapters from someone on this site (see the classifieds) for $40.00 and bolted them right on in about 30 minutes. Everyone likes different sounds but for me, the RK's was the way to go. -
I would also like to add that Yamaha has been great...dealers....not so good.

As a word of advise....check the tire pressure before you leave the dealers lot. I bought a new RSV last August. Rode it a lot but I neglected to check the tire pressure for a few weeks and ended up cupping the tires from low pressure. After cupping the tires, I pumped up the tires to proper pressure and rode it a a few weeks more. I checked tire pressure every couple of days and no pressure loss was noticed so that proved it had to have left the dealer with low air pressure. I also had a bad experience with another dealer as well so I try to do all my own maintenance. I'm sure there are good dealers out there but I haven't found one yet.

I have an 08 and love it. I purchased it new in August of 08 and it presently has 7800 miles on it. Some of us feel like the stock handle bars could have a little more pull back to them and we either install another set of bars or some bar risers. When I first got mine, I could ride a couple of hundred miles and be fine but if I rode further than that, I would get a slight pain between my shoulder blades in my upper back. I installed an after market handlebar that looked stock but brought the grips 2 inches closer to me and now I can ride several hundred miles in one day and feel fine at days end. My wife loves it too. It also comes with a 5 year transferable unlimited mileage warranty. I have no problem getting 42 miles per gallon. One thing I wish Yamaha would do is install some vents in the front lower cowling....the one that goes around the radiator. There is a set that will bolt on to the small crash bar but IMHO I don't think they are adequate. I live in GA and we can see summer temps in the 100 deg + range and the heat coming off the engine can get really hot on your legs......but that is really good in the winter. If you get it, you will like it!!

Tank capacity
raceman62race replied to hillrider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hillrider, When you drained your tank, did you drain it with the petcock valve in the "on" position or did you drain it in the "reserve" position? -
I have the back rest on my 08 RSV and I love it. Installing handlebars that pulled the grips 2" closer to me helped my back pain more than anything.

Mine use to NOT open that far. As I took the prop off, I noticed that I could bolt the swivel part back on up side down and it would allow the trunk to open further. Or maybe it was installed up side down from the factory...I don't know. Hard to explain but it would let the trunk open farther if I mounted it up side down and it would still function just like before.
-
I went out at lunch to check it out and sure enough as mentioned, the screws had backed out causing it to bind. I unscrewed the prop from the lid and I was able to open the trunk lid all the way. Then I could get in there and see what was going on. I ended up taking it completely off and I too like it beter with the prop off. The prop seems a little light duty anyway. I'll be careful not to let to much tention get on the hinges. Thanks for the advise/warnings!

Rode my bike to work today and when I got to work, I couldn't get the trunk open but a few inches. It seems something went wrong with the trunk lid prop. I am now considering removing it. Has anyone removed the stock trunk lid prop and what did you replace it with...if anything?

I think that is going to be a set of pipes off of a Harley Electra Glide -
After Market Exhaust
raceman62race replied to OutlawRider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I got a set of stock Harley Road King slip on mufflers and installed them in 30 minutes. They have a nice rumble but are not very loud and definately louder than stock. -
Here is what I do to prevent viruses. I have a desk top and a laptop. The laptop never goes on the internet and it has Windows and all of the Microsoft programs loaded on it that I use/need. The desk top has UBUNTU loaded on it which is a lynux based program. You can download UBUNTU from the internet for free and all of the software for UBUNTU is free and there are thousands of programs avalible for free download. It is a point and click system very simular to windows so if you can run a windows machine, you can run a UBUNTU machine. There is a program called Open office for UBUNTU that has the word processor, spread sheet, power point and E-mail supervisior much like Microsoft Office has for Windows and they are interchangeable......meaning you can write a spread sheet on a lynux machine using UBUNTU through Open Office and Microsoft Excel will open it just like it was originated in Excel and vise versa. Word and powerpoint are interchangeable as well. Being it is a lynux operating system, viruses don't seem to be able to affect it because most are targeted to Windows. It is also much faster than Windows. The only draw back to UBUNTU is the printer drivers. Most printers come wiht drivers that go on Windows machines. There are several drivers avalible for free download for a UBUNTU machine but not all printers have drivers avalible. Someone has to write a driver and make it avalible to the public. Anyone interested just do a google search for UBUNTU and you can go to the internet site to read more about it and download. I think you can download it over windows and if you don't like it, you can un install. I've been running UBUNTU for a couple of years with no virus protection and I haven't had any problems.

Weak stator output?
raceman62race replied to shadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I use to ride a Suzuki VL1500 and I went through a time when the lights would dim considerably at idle. Ended up being a loose connection at the battery. It had enough power to crank every time I wanted to crank it with no problem. I searched and searched for the problem as it didn't always do that. Ended up not finding the problem so I actually gave up on it. About 2 months later, I cleaned the battery connections and made sure thy were tight because of another problem and it fixed the light problem. Being an electrician, I would think if the battery connection was bad, I would have cranking problems because that is where that is where the most demand on the battery is...cranking. Just something I thought I would share that happened to me -
As mentioned before, there are several different opinions concerning tires. When I first for my RSV, I had tire issues and had to work through them. In doing so, I called the tire manufacturer and this is what I have found out. (I have found this to be true): M/C tires average losing about 1 PSI per month and 1 PSI for every 10 deg. ambient temp drop. Thus they will also gain pressure as ambient temp increases due to the heat expanding the air. I don't think it makes much of a difference if you run sidewall reccomendations or Yamaha's reccomendations but you definately don't want to run low tire pressure for safety reasons and possibly cupping the tire. Low air pressure will definately cause the tire to cup and then it will sound like a 4 X 4 going down the road.

If I had this problem I would ride the bike until it got hot and started slipping. Then I would switch the engine off and open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder as quickly as I could. If much more than a small dribble of fluid came out, your not releasing pressure from the slave cylinder. If not much fluid comes out, you can assume everything is working correctly except for the clutches themselves. This should be a way to sort of cut the system in half and point you in the right direction

I think Yamaha changed the design a while back. I inquired about the rails Yamaha sells looking different than several of the pics posted here and everyone here said they had Yamaha rails. The pic Yamaha shows on their accessories page looks different than most I have seen

I can understand both sides of the issue here. I bought a used bike from a very large used bike dealer in Atlanta and they would not let me test ride. Luckly, the bike turned out being a great bike. While I was in the market for my RSV, I found a used one for sale in south GA. The sales add said "no test rides without cash in hand". After calling and talking to him, I found out he use to own a Kawasaki Vulcan and a potential buyer dropped it in his driveway. Another thing to consider is if you let a potiential buyer test ride your bike and they get seriously hurt or killed, you might find yourself in a law suit. On the other hand, most people would be weary about spending a lot of money without test riding...... especially from an individual vs a dealer...... a dealer has his reputation to maintain while an individual may not value his reputation as highly as you would expect a dealer to. With all this said, I think the best way to go is as previously stated........cash in hand with some sort of time limit of a refund if the bike is still in same shape it was in when they orginally bought it. That way if they get hurt or kill themselves on the bike, technically it was their bike and you are free and clear of law suits and they are protected if they find something they don't like about the bike.

Best Oil
raceman62race replied to mkrieg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I do agree....My Grandfather use to run nothing but Quaker State in his truck. That was back in the day when Quaker State really had a bad rap going for them. He use to change it every 3000 miles. He died, and I ended up getting his truck. It had almost 200,000 miles on it and the truck was falling apart but the engine ran strong. This was back when you almost never heard of a vehicle getting more than 100,000 miles. I decieded to put the engine in another truck. During the engine swap, I pulled the valve covers and oil pan and it was clean as a freshly rebuilt engine. That proved to me that it is more important to change the oil more so than what oil you put in it!! MKREG I run 5W-40 because that was all I could find in the Rotella Synthetic. My wife's bike is older and has more miles on it. I think next time I am going to run regular Rotella 20W-40 in her bike- 17 replies

Best Oil
raceman62race replied to mkrieg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think you will find that you will get recommendations ranging from A to Z when it comes to oils. I don't think there are actually "bad" oils in today's market. I have had several scoots and have ran Yamalube, Amsoil and I am now running the Rotella blue jug synthetic in a 2nd gen.- 17 replies

You'll find that tires are all different and you can get more miles out of certain brand/type vs others........along with driving style. I never worry about mileage but I don't run them until cords show either. I have 2 things that I look at to decide when to change a tire and mileage isn't one of them. If I have about 1/16" tread depth left in the center of the tire, I change it or if I see any signs of dry rot. The tread depth thing is not cut in stone....if I am planning a very long trip..say 2000 mile trip and the tread is getting low, I'll go ahead and change it anyway.

I have a Morgan Carbtune and have never really liked it from the start. One of the rods seems to stick. It would seem to me that if you turned the carbtune up side down, all of the rods should go to the exact same spot because if all of the rods are the exact same weight, they should compress the spring the same amount. If I turn my carb tune upside down, I can get them to go to the same spot but I have to shake it.........that don't seem right. I have used it once but didn't really feel comfortable with the accuracy.

I was very hesitant about revealing much about myself when I first joined the site but I ended up adding more info as time went on. I was able to develop an opinion of the site and I feel like everone here is a great group of people. I ended up adding a little more info than I orginally posted when I first joined. I have no problem with someone having a lot of personal info about myself for honest reasons. But you must realize, I am speaking as someone who has had their identy stolen and it was, and still is, a nightmare to deal with because there isn't an official authority you can turn to....you are on your own to deal with it. You might be able to get the police to fill out a report but that is as far as it goes. In most cases, you have no idea how someone got your personal information. As a result, you become VERY skepticle about revealing anything to anyone. In dealing with my identiy theft, I have spent many days trying to find out how my identy got stolen and you would be surprised at how little amount of info a bad guy needs to ruin someone. I hope no one here has to deal with some of the things I have had to deal with.
