In June, my wife and I along with another couple will be taking a vacation to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway and Sky Line Dr. There will be 2 bikes and both will be towing a trailer. We are planning on leaving GA traveling north on freeways to Virginia, do some white water rafting and then head over to the northern most end of Sky Line Dr. We want to head south on Sky Line Dr into the Blue Ridge Parkway continuing on BRP to the southern end. This is where I am asking for advise: How many days should I plan to be on SLD & BRP? We want to go at a casual pace enjoying the views and photo opportunities. Also, does anyone know of any "must see" things and places along the way? All advise will be appreciated! I know it's a little early for this because June is a long time off but we need to know how many days vacation requests to put in for.

Clearview shield with vent
raceman62race replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you don't want to spend the money for the complete windshield all you have to do is buy a windshield vent for a Goldwing and install it on the stock windshield. You can get them off E-bay for around $40.00. That's all Clearview does is install Goldwing vents on their windshields -
Front and rear tire pressure
raceman62race replied to Chiro's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have about 13,000 miles on a set of E III's. I try to maintain at least 35 PSI in front and 40 PSI in rear. I've never had any issues and it looks like I might be able to get another 5,000 miles or so before I have to replace them. -
I'm running E III's on front and rear of a 2nd Gen with over 13,000 miles on them. Still look good and not even close to being worn out. I changed to E III's when my bike had about 1500 miles on it so I really don't have much to compare it to but I have been pleased. Will probabally put E' III's back on when it's time to change them out.

Passing Lights vs No Passing Lights
raceman62race replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've had mine on about a year and I like them very much. I don't have them on during the day but I insist on burning them at night as it REALLY improves the amount of light I have to drive by. I pulled power for my driving lights straight from the battery, through a fuse then through a relay and then to the lights. I don't have any issues with anything dimming when I turn them on. I've heard all the charging issues some have had but I have never had a problem.- 37 replies

I always wear a helmet because it is the law where I live. I think I would wear a helmet even if I were in a state that allowed us to go without one. For once, I would like to go a couple of miles without one just to see what it's like but I would be putting it back on pretty quickly

Northern Virginia - Wiring RSV for towing trailer
raceman62race replied to Gamecock's topic in Trailer Talk
Read this thread. IMHO, it is well worth the $ spent. Complete plug and play system for the RSV. I don't have the part number for the adaptor but if you call them, I am sure they can get you everything you need [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38689]Plun N Play isolation module or 2nd gens - VentureRider.Org[/ame] -

Any ideas how to remove a stripped Allen bolt?
raceman62race replied to Color01's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
If a tool exists, this place will have it. Just go to this site and search for left hand drill bits. They have a catalog you might get them to send and I'm not kidding.....if it is a tool, they will have it http://www1.mscdirect.com/industrial-equipment.html -
The wife and I have 2 sets of helmets.....a bump cap type for summer and a modular flip up helmet for winter. We have J & M head sets in both helmets but we don't use the head sets much during summer with the bump cap helmet. . I like them OK but I seem to have to turn the volume on the bike up to about 25 to hear the music good while using the headsets. It only takes a volume level of about 16 if I have it set for the speakers. Does anyone else have to turn the volume up fairly high to hear through headsets?

New question on passing lamps
raceman62race replied to Rosie's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I do electrical work for a living and I would highly recommend using a relay and pull the power for the passing lamps from the battery through a fuse. You can pick up power to energize the relay from most anywhere....... just be sure the power drops out when the ignition switch is off so the lights won't stay on with the ignition switch in the off position. This is the way I installed my lights and they have been installed for over a year and I have had no problems. When I had the fairing split, I fished a straightened coat hanger down under the gas tank and I used it to pull a wire from the battery to the fairing for passing light power. That way I didn't have to pull the tank. This way if the passing lamps were to cause a fuse to blow, the passing lamps are the only thing that would lose power. There are probably a dozen ways to wire them but this was the way I preferred. -
This is what I wear and it does the trick. It diesn't get really cold here in GA. The coldest I have ridden in is 26 deg and I had no problems at all. I changed my pipes because at 60 mph with stock pipes, all I could hear was wind. I wanted to hear a little of the engine but I didn't want loud. I bought a set of RK take offs from the local HD dealer for a surprising $40.00. (they looked like brand new pipes)I left the RK pipes stock and I really love the way they sound. I can ride through any residential area without drawing attention while at the same time I can hear a little of the engine at 60 MPH

Passing Lamp Not Working
raceman62race replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Good write up on splitting the fairing but be very careful removing the crome piece at the base of the windshield. It costs $170.00 from Yamaha......guess how I know? -

what kind of Oil and oil filter?
raceman62race replied to bikerjohn's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Here is a link to filters http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html I'm with Monsta on this one........I don't think it matters which oil you use as long as you change it regurlarly. .........Yamaha manual says not to use "energy conserving" oils so that will eliminate 90% of the oil out there. -
Space Shuttle & ISS sightings this week

We went down the road to a wide open field and really dark. It came by at exactly the precise time as posted on the internet site. Amazing!!! -
When we make short weekend trips, like 1 nighters, we stay in motel rooms. When we went to Ashville for the M & E, we camped and we learned from some of the people there. So here is what we now have: A trailer and we pack a tent, an air mattress that blows up to about 18 - 24" high so we can sit on the side and get dressed, a small window unit air conditioner for the tent, rope lights for the inside of the tent, coffee pot, lap top computer, extention cord, sheet and 2 sleeping bags and pillows. My wife has her own bike but when we do much traveling, she prefers to ride 2 up with me and we can usually get enough clothes, toiletries.....on the bike that will last for 3 days. We try to stay at KOA's and we use the computer to find the next KOA destination. Starbucks and most of the fast food resturants now have wireless internet connection for their customers. We also check the weather and if rain is likely at night, we'll stay in a motel. Nothing is more mizzerable than tent camping in the rain. Most KOA's have laundry matts and we'll wash up our clothes there. We can set up and take down in less than 30 minutes and while the coffee is brewing in the morning if I really try, I can usually be packed up by the time the coffee has brewed. We always get a laugh at some point in our travels because we own a nice 5th wheel camper that we don't use any longer. (It's for sale in the classifieds section here) We have found that we enjoy traveling on the Venture more than we do using the 5th wheel. We've traveled enough to test out all the things mentioned above and it works well for us. Our real trip will be coming up July of 2010. We're going to stay gone 9 days and head north into Virginia and do some white water rafting then shoot over to the coast and head south down the coast until we reach Tybee Island and then swing back up towards home.

Rick, keep us posted on how the Corbin seat turns out. I've got a Corbin that works for me but my wife doesn't like it. My wife has her own bike and when she rides with me, it is usually for long distances. If it turns out well, I might send mine to you and see if you can improve the passenger seat.........heck while your at it might as well do the driver seat too!

Georgia Trooper not indicted in biker's death
raceman62race replied to RandyR's topic in Watering Hole
I think we all need to be held to the exact same accountability level. If a cop causes a wreck or a death, they need to be held to the same accountability level as if a member of the public was the one that caused the wreck or death. I know and understand that they have a duty to perform and I am behind them all the way but taking a innocent bystanders life is unacceptable even if it was an accident...and I am sure the patrol didn't purposefully pull out in front of the biker. If one of us pulled out in front of someone and killed them, the courts wouldn't let us walk away from it so why should the cop? -

I bought a new Corbin for my 08 RSV and thought I had made a mistake when I first started riding with it. Corbin says to give it 1000 mile break in period. I have about 2000 miles on my seat and it seems to be better now than it was at 1000 miles and I think it is actually not fully broken in yet. As of now it is pretty comfortable and getting better.
