  1. An Ethanol blend seems to be ok in most engines when it is used quickly. It seems that Ethanol turns bad much faster than 100% gas. It is said that it also separates in your tank and sinks to the bottom. My experience has been very bad with Ethanol in my bikes that do not get ridden regularly. Gummed up carbs. I now use only 100% gas and still pour in a little SeaFoam as a stabilizer.
  2. My rear tire was worn very flat in the center and caused somewhat violent behavior during lane changes over cracks in the road . . .
  3. My ZX11D Ninja got a nail in the new rear tire last year at a rally in Eureka Springs, AR. I had it plugged and rode all weekend and all the way home to Oklahoma City. The tire is still on the bike and I just got back from Eureka Springs again. The plugs that I trust are the "rope" type for radials. When properly installed with rubber cement they bond to the tire. The very worst that might happen is a slow leak (never happened to me . . . so far). With all of this said I need to also mention that I would probably plug a front tire in an emergency and change it right away. Even a slow leak is scary on the front.
  4. I have a Corbin and it works well for my 260 pounds. Generally the Corbin works well for riders over 200 pounds. I think the stock seat foam will compress after a bit until you are riding on the seat pan. The Corbin uses memory foam and does not seem to bottom out.
  5. Has anyone mounted driving lights on the forks? I would love to have lights that point in the direction of my front wheel . . .
  6. My 1985 VR does the same thing. I recently read something about carb idle circuits getting gummed up and causing these kinds of probs. The idle circuit is supposed to be very small fuel paths that can slowly clog like arteries. I plan on soaking and cleaning my carbs to within an inch of their lives . . .
  7. I have a Corbin on my sport bike. I put it on after owning the bike for a couple of years. The Corbin is very comfortable and I can stay in the saddle much longer versus the stock seat. I think part of the issue is rider weight and seat foam. A stock seat has soft foam that will compress over time. The heavier rider (that would be me) will compress the foam and be riding on the seat base of the soft stock seat. The Corbin seat uses "memory" foam that does not compress the same. In addition, as someone else stated, the Corbin seat is shaped differently. By the way, a Corbin seat is heavy! I think mine weighs twice the stock seat. I cannot afford a Corbin for my VR at this time. However, I recently saw a thread on replacing a section of the stock seat with memory foam. This looks interesting . . .
  8. I picked my '85 brownie up for a good price and found the CB and air suspension systems bad. The air suspension system did not want to be fixed, so, I installed two air valves with pressure gauges at the back of the seat. I carry a small hand pump in the saddle bag for adjustments. I love this beast! I removed the rear bumper, trailer hitch, tail-pipe extensions and driver floor boards. These are for sale. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o318/GaryZ_photos/pix037b.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o318/GaryZ_photos/YamahaVenture01b.jpg
  9. Oh, by the way . . . It's never really done!
  10. Years ago on my Yamaha XS650SE I made a small plate for my Air Force decal using sheet metal. It bolted to the axle clamp, bent 90 degrees and placed the decal in front of the fork leg. I actually had a security guy argue that it was not legal because it could be unbolted and removed. The discussion ended when I explained to his supervisor that the fork could be unbolted and removed . . .
  11. Dear Pegs, Thank you for your input on the Vmax cams/V-boost installed in a Venture engine. Your tone suggests that I have in some way hurt your feelings. I assure you that was not my intent.
  12. Thank you for your speculation, I do appreciate all input. Any one out there that has made this conversion want to share?
  13. Thanks for the pdf. I had read that a while ago and missed the last statement. He believes the torque curve will move 2000 rpm up from stock. I guess the question remains . . . How much torque is left for normal riding?
  14. Reviewing the specs I found that the Vmax also has 1mm larger valves. The smaller VR valves are probably better for the VR when using Vmax cams . . . Higher intake velocity at lower rpm. I am concerned that the Vmax cams and V-Boost will hurt the low-end torque needed to move my 750lb VR with my 260lb butt and my 138lb passenger. Anyone have this set-up and can comment? I would rather not hear speculation.
  15. Very well said . . . IMHO the folks that are the quickest to blame are also the the fastest to deny.
  16. My bikes are with Gieco because Farmers refuses to insure my 1999 Ninja ZX11D. Really ticked me off because I am 55 years young, clean driving record, and I only wanted liability coverage! Car and home still with Farmers and the home owners went up $175 this year. Did some shopping around and found others wanted more money. I guess I stay with Farmers . . .
  17. I had the same experience with the back tire. The bike would jump or jerk each time I changed lanes and passed over the seam in the road. A new back tire cured all bad behavior!
  18. I just realized that Squeeze is in Europe (thanks greg). IMHO we are saying the same thing about brakes, however, convincing him is another matter.
  19. I am trying to answer a posted question and you only want to be right. Updated brakes are better, when the rider needs or wants better brakes. However, better is relative. How bad do you need to improve your 1st Gen brakes? $500 better? $1000 better? Are you having problems stopping? Fix your stock brakes. Are you having problems with brake fade? Upgrade. Do you want better, just because you want better? Upgrade. As others have stated, the 1st Gen brakes are not bad. In fact, they do a pretty good job stopping a 750lb motorcycle. Please do not confuse others by making them think the factory brakes have something wrong with them.
  20. Let me try to understand your comment . . . You feel the difference between my sport bike brakes and healthy 1st gen brakes is more than night and day? I am not sorry to say that I disagree, and I regularly ride my bikes back-to-back. Most riders will feel little real difference upgrading to R1 calipers unless they are canyon carving or towing a trailer. The R1 calipers should offer less fade under heavy braking. Upgrading to the R1 master cylinder could offer a very different initial feel. I guess many will interpret the different "feel" as more or better braking power.
  21. Everyone wants to make their stuff better and VR owners are typical. The standard brakes on the 1st Gen VR are very good for most applications. Updating to MkII or R1 will only produce a marginal improvement over stock brakes that are healthy. I have been riding sport bikes for the last 5 years and using only the front brake on my 1st Gen VR is scary-bad. One rotor simply cannot stop a 750+lb motorcycle with rider and/or passenger. The rear brake is a little better, but not much. When used together the linked VR brakes are very effective. After rebuilding his stock brakes (remember to change out ALL the fluid), suggest that he try using the front and back together.
  22. 1985 VR http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o318/GaryZ_photos/pixsb2.jpg 1980 KZ1000-A4 http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o318/GaryZ_photos/pix006b.jpg 1999 ZX11D http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o318/GaryZ_photos/twinpipespix1008b.jpg
  23. Leave them be . . . However, I always replace all fluid with fresh when messing with brakes.
  24. I still have the floorboards and a search of the forum turned up this tidbit; http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13746 The last entry says my '83 - '85 floorboards can be made to fit your '86. I do not know the details. Probably has something to do with the clearance of the chin spoiler. Gary
  25. The bike starts, idles and runs fine in the low speed circuit but will not run at higher RPM. Your description suggests one or more broken carb diaphragms. The slide(s) won't lift and intake air/fuel is limited.
