How to get respect from other drivers; 1) Drive a very expensive car 2) Drive an old beater 3) Drive a very expensive car that is wrecked on both ends (the other driver will absolutely know you don't care)

I cut 5" off of my stock '85 VR windscreen. It is now a couple of inches below my eyes. The wind noise and buffeting increased significantly for me and mildly for my wife. Although it looks better now, I will probably be replacing it with a stock windscreen for the winter months.

1st Gen parts
GaryZ replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have floorboards with controls from my 1985 VR for sale; $250 + freight http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o318/GaryZ_photos/pix037b.jpg -
Bought my first two-wheeled terror when I was 15. Bought my first ZX11 Ninja five years ago. The ZX11 is a beast and I enjoy every minute on it! A year and a half on the VR and lovin' it. My four grown kids think I am in my second childhood. I tell my five grandkids that I never left my first. 56 years young

I only paid $600 for the whole motorcycle last year . . .

Doing a lot of wheelies will put a flat spot on your steering head bearings

A short search found this; http://kurveygirl.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=71

That piece might be for the "non" Royale version trunk? It's smaller and I think it comes to a point at the back.

I also removed the control panel and compressor and added separate air valves. I installed the valves with pressure gauges in the compressor cover behind the seat. Now I simply peek behind the seat to check air pressure and fill with a hand pump carried in a saddle bag.

Carb repair or upgrade
GaryZ replied to Craigq's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It should bolt right on and run. However, there is a controller of some kind that needs to be used to engage the V-Boost. Your Vmax parts would really be nice on my 1985 Venture when I get the Vmax cams installed . . . Want to sell? -
Wow. I did not dispute the possibility of exploding batteries. I clearly stated "healthy" electrical system and other similar stuff. Please go argue with someone else . . .

Absolutely true . . . If you are uncomfortable, unsure, or just plain scared of your car or bike battery, let someone else take care of it.

You and Camos are making many assumptions and a couple of mistakes here. A running car can deliver >100 amps, a car battery >60 amps. Either of these will easily fry wires on a system that is broke. The key here is "broke". If there could be a rectifier/regulator problem jumping a bike from a running car, then the same problem can occur jumping car-to-car. I started jump-starting cars and motorcycles around forty years ago. Unfortunately I have needed to jump-start my motorcycles (I had three) a couple times a year due to the lack of a battery tender. I agree that a bike probably doesn't need the addition of the car running. But, it shouldn't make a difference to a healthy electrical system. I stand by my statement "A charging system does not force current into a load, the load draws it" and I also think you guys do not understand what a load is. A load is a path of resistance between the positive and negative terminals of the power source. The higher the resistance, the less current flow (amps). A short is a path with very little resistance causing maximum current flow. A short will fry wires. A 6V bulb is a load on a 6V system and it is a short on a 12V battery. A good bike battery (even if it is discharged) is not a short and will not draw a bunch of current. 13.9V vs 13.3V is only half a volt and cannot develop enough current to damage a good regulator. BTW, why are you yelling?

I had my VR connected to my running Astro van for over 20 minutes yesterday while I was syncing the carbs. Sorry Camos, you are mistaken. The MC will only draw the power it needs from the running car, just like the cars' own battery. A charging system does not force current into a load, the load draws it . . .

As was said, you should be able to move the tire enough to get to the stem for replacement. The hard part is breaking the bead. A friend in another forum uses a large C-clamp. I suggest putting the bike on the center-stand, break the bead, and use the C-clamp again to move the tire enough to cut out the old stem. Bolt in a steel stem, release the clamp and air up.

I bought a sealed-beam Halogen headlight to try in my VR. Has anyone tried this?

My 86 runs like crap
GaryZ replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I agree with a couple others here. Running without the air box will create a very lean condition with stock jetting. The bike will seem to run OK at idle and at light throttle. -
Excellent write-up . . . Thanks!

The first few days with my '85 VR
GaryZ replied to RidenAgain's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
1. Not sure how this can happen. Volts are dropped through resistance. 2. I have successfully put this mod on my '85. I connected the resistor to a switched fuse on the fuse block. Where did you connect the resistor? 3. I have tried a couple of chemicals on my dash panels with no luck. -
I may be riding up on my ZX11 sportbike. It's gray with all the decals and emblems removed. Two years ago it was the only sportbike parked on Dixon! Say "Hi" if you see me . . .

Some of you are getting off on a tangent . . . #7 says nothing about helmets. It says if you ride a motorcycle, you must have proof of health insurance coverage. There are many times more car accidents versus motorcycle accidents and the uninsured medical costs are far greater. Yet the Texas ABATE people are proud of this new law that negatively effects motorcycle riders.

LED's, my feeble attempts.

I have a bumper for sale; $200 -
We have been down this road before. The majority of vehicle accident health costs not covered by insurance comes from CAR accidents, not motorcycle accidents. Why isn't "proof of health insurance" demanded for car drivers? Why would ABATE approve something like this?

I have played with mild hot rod Chevy's since the early 1970's and always prefer manifold vacuum. The possible problem with a fixed ignition like my VR would be detonation. On Chevy's I can adjust initial timing to minimize detonation . . .

I will put a little wood on this fire . . . Many years ago a motorcycle magazine tested a popular myth. Remember, those were the days when almost all bikes were air cooled. The myth (and practice) was to not use factory recommended 10W40 motor oil and use 20W50. Does this sound like our discussion? The test was to add an oil temp gauge to the test bike (don't remember the brand, I think it was a twin) and make a brisk run up a local mountain on a summer day while monitoring the temp. The results surprised everyone. The 20W50 ran hotter. The magazine conclusion: Maybe we should run the recommended weight oil. This conclusion especially is important to me because my VR runs very hot when the air temp is around 100 degrees. I do not want the oil adding more heat . . .
