You only need to run a higher octane if your motor is "pinging" under a load. I mention this because different areas of the planet have very different fuel quality. I have experienced "pinging" on California regular gas when AZ, NM, and OK regular did not. 10% Ethanol fuel seems to have one major problem for me. This fuel turns bad in about half the time of 100% gas. I suffered carb probs on both of my bikes until I learned this tidbit. I now put around 3oz of SeaFoam in every other tank. The SeaFoam keeps the carbs clean and treats the fuel.

I really like that color on the gen 1 . . . Nice!

Professor Harry Hurt used to say this before his first major safety study in the '70's. After the study he said any helmet is better than no helmet and there was little difference in the effectiveness versus purchase cost. Recent studies in "Motorcyclist" have verified that little has changed. I think the expensive helmet is usually more comfortable, has better features, prettier, and has more bragging rights ("bling"). Some will always claim the expensive helmet does a better job of protection. It is likely these nice folks are defending their choice of spending obscene amounts of money on a safety hat.

I commented on another forum about this method. It is my opinion that it works for those people unwilling or unable to turn and glance over their shoulder. This method does not work for me because I regularly tow a small trailer and heavily depend on my side view mirrors for backing.

I agree with a number of comments from both sides of this discussion. I would point out that all those saying that a helmet needs to be replaced after 4 - 5 years, or after a "drop", bring no evidence or specifics to their position. After 5 years is the helmet totally ineffective? 50%? 20% 10%? Helmets are tested at simulated speeds well below the average speed of everyone on this forum. They are effective only to a point. Losing 10% effectiveness after 5 years seems acceptable to me when it is your favorite helmet that is full of electronic do-dads.

Will this fit?
GaryZ replied to clint_1985's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Earl, What is different that makes the front spoiler fit on MKII's? -
Synching my carbs has reduced the vibration in my handlebars, but, the vibes still put my hands to sleep at certain RPM's. I have considered adding weight to the bar-ends. This idea of damping the bars with rubber might be something to look into.

New Oils Seals for Valves?
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I found the same thing. No seals or gasket sets for the 1st Gen Venture sold through aftermarket sources. I am buying the seals from skydoc_17. Thanks to everyone for all the input . . . and I appreciate the offer from Squeeze! -
New Oils Seals for Valves?
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
1983 - 1993 Venture valve stem oil seal, part number 26H-12119-00-00 best price = $10.00 best price found is from Skydoc_17 (thanks!) Intake Valve part # 26H-12111-00-00 Exhaust Valve part # 26H-12121-00-00 Gen II Star Venture Valve stem Oil Seal part # 4KM-12119-00-00 best price = $4.63 Looked at one of these this afternoon and it looks very much like mine, but, without the spring-clip around the base. Intake Valve part # 26H-12111-00-00 Exhaust Valve part # 26H-12121-00-00 FJ1100, FJ1200, Vmax 1200, and others valve stem oil seal, part number 51Y-12119-00-00 best price = $5.54 Squeeze, Are you using the Vmax part in the Venture? VR valve stems are 5.9mm Vmax valve stems are 5.5mm Can the Vmax seal be used in the VR? I have been told that the smaller dimension will "cup" and cause oil leakage into the combustion chamber. Can the Star seal be used in the VR? They use the same valves! -
New Oils Seals for Valves?

Yes, I will be checking valve clearances and adjusting as needed. I checked three shims so far and they were all "280" -
New Oils Seals for Valves?
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, I removed the valves to clean them up. I have already cleaned each valve on my wire wheel. Next I will "lap" the valve faces and reinstall. -
I have finally got my 1987 replacement engine taken apart to install the Vmax cams. I decided to pull the heads and do a valve job. The seller said it had about 40k miles on it and it looks very good inside. The manual says to install new valve oil seals when reinstalling the valves. These little guys are almost $12 each and there are 16 of them! Anybody have experience or opinion about reusing these oil seals?

Center Stand
GaryZ replied to SC89Venture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is a very good explaination of how to get any motorcycle up on it's center stand. I will add one thing; When you first step on the center stand and lower it, slightly rock the bike until you clearly feel both legs are touching the ground. Now stiff-leg the center stand, lift up then back, mostly with your right hand. -
I took the toll road from OKC to Tulsa on my Ninja for the first time last September. I put my Pike Pass in my riding jacket (inside breast pocket) thinking it would be picked up. It did not. Fortunately, I wasn't chased down by the police (the bikes are not listed on the pass). However, I did not want to try my luck again and moved the pass to the map window of my tank bag. It worked fine from there. BTW: I always keep my pass in the static bag when not traveling on the toll roads. Aluminum foil also works to keep it from transmitting.

rear air suspension
GaryZ replied to breezelasbre73's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Two things come to mind; 1) The stock springs are worn out and possibly no longer match rates. 2) Progressives are a combination spring with softer coils at one end. The result is the front end responds better to small bumps.- 12 replies

rear air suspension
GaryZ replied to breezelasbre73's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I forgot to mention . . . My '85 has stock forks and rear shock, my wife and I go about 400lbs + a few things in the saddlebags. 50psi rear and 16psi front seems to do it for me.- 12 replies

GaryZ replied to breezelasbre73's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My '85 petcock is missing the knob and I do not know if it is in "reserve" position. CW or CCW or middle? Inquiring minds want to know . . . -
rear air suspension
GaryZ replied to breezelasbre73's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The service manual has ranges for the air pressure on the '83 - '85 Venture; Front = 7 - 21 psi Rear = 7 - 85 psi I found these under "Class Functions" on page 28 of this; XVZ12L/KC2 XVZ12DL/DK2 Service Manual 41R-28197-10 The service manual above was downloaded from this web site.- 12 replies

Need side panel vents
GaryZ replied to cimack77's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I like the look with these panels removed. The heat is really nice in the winter and really hot in the summer. I think I am going to fabricate clear windows for these panels this spring . . . -
I checked this web page and found the kit for the Goldwing is $249.95 !!!

My eyes finally got bad enough that I had to get glasses. My right eye has very poor distance vision, the left eye is fine. Both eyes need a little help for reading small stuff. My first pair of glasses did not seem to work for me. I wore them for over a year. I had to slide them down on my nose to drive or watch TV. That first pair got lost on I-40 when I left them hanging on my tank-bag. The eye industry has a scam going that if your prescription is over a year old you must have a new exam (and pay the $80) before they will make new glasses. I decide to try a different eye doctor and store. This guy made a few adjustments, based on my complaints on the first glasses, and the second pair work much better for driving/TV. I actually do not avoid night driving now!

I Found A Way! (adjusting the pilot screws)
GaryZ replied to Cougar's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
One thing that needs to be said; When adjusting the pilot screws the engine should be at its recommended idle or adjusting the pilot screws will have no effect. Above the recommended idle the engine is running on the primary fuel circuit and not on the idle circuit.
