The Beast is Alive!
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Update on my last update; Rode 200 miles on Saturday and clocked 40.5 mpg. That's better than the Vmax average! We were cruisin' around 4,000 rpm and I decided to go from last in line to the front, just for fun. My bike is a beast above 4,000 rpm. It pulls like a locomotive! I am very pleased with how my Beast has turned out and I want to thank all of the guilty on this forum (you know who you are). -
Plugs or Carbs?
GaryZ replied to MikeZ06Allen's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Your symptoms sound like you are running on three cylinders instead of four. Start the bike (cold) and let it run for a minute or two. Shut it off and carefully touch the exhaust flanges. If one is still cool, it's not firing. This narrows down your problem. Pull the plug and inspect. If it's not firing, it will probably be wet with gas. -
+1 I love my V4. This new Kwak looks like the best selling Harleys (Street Glide / Road Glide). http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Motorcycles/find-the-one.html I love the look, not the functionality. The passenger needs a backrest and I want more storage. $0.02

Coolant bypass valve
GaryZ replied to DesertRider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK. I finally got it out. I used tile-cutter pliers! These things have a horizontal cutting edge that I was able to clamp to the head of the bypass valve to wiggle it free. The down side is the head has been damaged and I can no longer read 'ON' or 'OFF'. The up side is that I have installed a new O-ring and my leak should be fixed. -
Coolant bypass valve
GaryZ replied to DesertRider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have tried; channel lock pliers vise grip pliers gorilla pliers needle-nose pliers The valve head will rock, but, it will not pull out. The result is the head of the valve is getting damaged and I have pinched my hands in a dozen places. Any other ideas? -
Coolant bypass valve
GaryZ replied to DesertRider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is a very timely thread. Last week I turned the bypass valve to 'ON' and drained / refilled the system (bypass back to 'OFF'). However, the system did not get full and the bike overheated. After cool-down I filled the system full and buttoned her up. Everything appeared to be good. The next day I have a small puddle of coolant. The bypass valve is now leaking. I found this thread telling me there is an 'O' ring. I removed the set screw without any trouble. I cannot get the valve out. What is the secret? Inquiring minds need to know . . . -
I am very happy with my VR since the de-link operation. I recommend de-linking your VR; If you ever ride on gravel, dirt or wet roads. If you ride other bikes without linked brakes.

Installed Earl's clutch upgrade today and I wanted to give him a big THANKS; The parts arrived promptly and the installation went smoothly. There was more oil in the clutch cover than I expected. I recommend placing a Gen 1 on its side stand, not the center-stand. Not a big deal, I was going to change the oil and filter anyway. The upgraded clutch set-up needs a little more pull on the handle, but, my clutch no longer slips at full throttle, and the clutch action is more linear. My Beast runs hard now!

Hidden AM-FM Antenna
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just got back from a ride with friends where we got 60+ miles out of town. The new antenna appears to be a significant improvement. -
After researching different antennas on line I found a good deal on an amplified AM-FM antenna at my local PEP Boys! The unit cost $19.99 + tax. I tested and mounted it below the windshield. It works better than the original 48" CB whip. Attached are a few photos for anyone interested in the install.

Elite 3 Front Tire
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The new tire arrived yesterday and I mounted it before dark and took a test ride; 1. Steering seems lighter 2. Turn-in is much better 3. The front no longer "jumps" as I cross parallel road seams 4. No more "head shake" around 50 mph I will report again after a couple hundred miles of break-in. -
I wonder what the accident statistics are for a motorcycle running straight into the side of a minivan without turning, braking, driver bailing off, etc? If I were to ride straight into the side of a minivan . . . - I probably had a heart attack and was already dead - The speed would be so great, all the safety gear and an airbag wouldn't save me

Oil Warning Light
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My oil level was down at the "low" mark. I added to the upper mark and the light isn't coming on. Just like someone said, this warning light is an actual low oil warning instead of a low pressure warning. Good to know! -
Sticking Thermostat?
GaryZ replied to bkuhr's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Today I replaced my radiator cap and discovered a simple way to check the hose from the overflow tank to the radiator. My MK1 overflow tank is physically higher than the radiator cap. If there is fluid in my overflow tank and the hose is not clogged, the tank will drain out the radiator cap when it is removed! -
Elite 3 Front Tire
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the note. I have around 2000 miles on an Elite 3 rear tire and I have no complaints. My worn out front tire is an Elite 2. I have a bad handlebar shake around 50 mph if I loosen my grip on the bars. I figure it's the worn out tire. -
The Dunlop web page shows an Elite 3 front tire is now available for a MK1; Elite 3 MR90-18H part# 4079-84 Can anyone verify this is correct before I order one from MotorCycle SuperStore?
