I increased performance on my ZX11D7 Ninja by adding a Muzzy header (4 into 1) and having a custom 1 into 2 exhaust built by a local guy. I found a Vmax 4 into 2 design that looks promising as a replacement for the Venture collector. I am wondering if Vmax exhaust pipes are bigger . . . Can one of you Vmax guys tell me the header diameter on the Vmax versus the Venture?

Targeting recreational equipment and perceived dangerous truck drivers is a tried and true American way for our Politicians to show the voters they are doing their job. They can claim success at protecting mankind while pissing off a minimum number of voters. Question: Why aren't GA voters screaming about the cost in tax & tourist dollars?

Help? Cannot get it apart...
GaryZ replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My '85 VR had 63,000 miles on her when I took off the collector. At first it was solid-stuck (all clamps and bolts removed/loose). I soaked the four pipe ends with penetrating oil overnight. One hit with my rubber hammer the next morning and the collector fell on the floor. -
I have a 1985 VR with the large top box. I bought a black backrest on ebay, but, it is for the smaller top box. Anyone need a very nice black backrest?

What are you doing right now to bring in the new year?
GaryZ replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Watering Hole
Ran sound for a band at a local club until 1pm. Now I'm drinking beer all alone to salute the New Year. -
I'm going to agree with Dan here. When you hit the starter button and all the electrical system goes dead and stays dead, my experience has been a dirty or loose battery cable.

I agree with Earl and will add one other reason to de-link; Switching between a bike with linked brakes and one without can be problematic. I have de-linked my VR and now both my bikes have similar manners when braking.

Both of my bikes will do the same thing when the front tire is worn. The ZX11 repeated itself each time the Dunlops (D207 and 208) started showing cupping on the front tire. I swapped to Metzler M1 and have not had the problem again. The VR had a worn E2 on the front when I bought it, no cupping could be seen, and exhibited the exact symptoms that you described. A new E3 on the front and the wobble was gone.

Weepy Water Pump
GaryZ replied to coy55boy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On my trip to Kerrville last month the VR leaked a little coolant when the temperature dropped to 22 degrees F. It dripped from the thermostat and the plastic hose going into the water pump. Maybe a teaspoon from each. Never leaked any other time during the trip. I assumed this was the typical problem discussed here and I have ignored it. Am I correct? -
Two things come to mind; 1. You probably looked at this when you changed the ignition switch. However, my VR lost all power when I turned the handlebars to the left. I traced it to a large red wire connection on the ignition switch. Soldered it back together and have not had the problem again. 2. Fused Link. It seems to me there is one of these things near my battery. It looks like a small black plastic box, an over-sized fuse holder.

Don't forget the 24" tire iron listed at the bottom. I'm heading to HF to buy two!

How do you identify the size of these carbs when they are right in front of you? Inquiring minds want to know . . . -
'Bags are painted two-tone
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here's a couple pictures from my ride last weekend. I really think the two-tone works to reduce the visual impact of the large 'bags & top box. -
1st gen MKII carb question
GaryZ replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The Service and Owner's manuals do not list HP (What's the deal?) and I found the listed numbers by searching "specifications" on the web. I checked and double-checked. 97HP is the most common listing for both the MKI & MKII. I think the cam specs on the MKII add a little torque down low for the massive weight increase. Of course there is a loss on the top-end I rechecked the Owner's manual for my XVZ12DN and updated a couple of things on the pdf. The biggie is the wet weight . . . the Owner's manual says 769lbs and the web specs had 30lbs less. I have attached the latest version of my pdf for your use and abuse. -
1st gen MKII carb question
GaryZ replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I researched the differences in Venture MKI - Venture MKII - Vmax - Venture Gen 2 The cross-ref shows the Royal Star has 32 mm carbs and all others were 34mm. This info mostly came out of the repair manuals. -
My other riding group (ZZRBikes) had a ride this past weekend. I was carrying a passenger and decided I would ride the Beast. I towed her to Dallas and rode to Kerrville on Friday morning. The group (2 x ZZR1200, 4 x C14, 1 x R1, 1 x BMW, and my VR) left Kerrville at 9:30am on Saturday. About 75 miles into the ride my rear tire started going down. I found a hole where something had punctured it. We put a plug in it and rode for a while. The plug came out (first time I have had a plug come out) and we got sideways in a turn. We put another plug in and took it easy to the "Motorcycle Store". A staff member claimed he had a plug that would not fall out. He used a kit and punched in a rubber plug with a mushroom or umbrella tip. I took it easy for the next 80 miles to the hotel. In the morning she is still holding the 42lbs of air I started with. I decided we would ride with a group most of the way back to Dallas, safety in numbers and all that. The ride got pretty brisk and I saw 105mph . . . twice. I feel pretty good about this plug and plan on buying one of those kits!

How do I tie a 1st Gen in a trailer?
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for all the responses. I got it in the trailer for a test fit (after removing the windshield) and discovered the obvious . . . the existing front wheel chock and tie-downs were designed for my Ninja and other than the chock, nothing else was in the right place. I ended up using a combination of your ideas. I removed my 2x4 chock and mounted my "drive-in" chock from Harbor Frieght. I tied lower triple-trees with a slight compression of the forks, and tied the passenger crash bars to the sides. After 50 miles I checked and found the triple-tree tie-downs had fell off (!!!). However that harbor frieght chock was holding her up. I put the front tie-downs back on and tied them different (they stayed on). I checked in Dallas and found one of the rear ties had fell off. She was still standing proud. Notes to self: 1 Harbor Frieght front wheel chocks are worth it 2 tape all tie-down hooks or they can fall off -
'Bags are painted two-tone
GaryZ replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The black was supposed to be more like primer, or flat. However, I shot a gloss clear over the primer and it has a lot of shine now. I may redo the clear coat over the black with a semi-gloss clear . . .
