  1. You had a bicycle with linked brakes ???
  2. I'm not sure about Dyna Beads, Amsoil, and the Dark Side. Maybe you meant Love Beads, Amoco, and Dark Shadows? However, I believe that linked brakes are dangerous. Everyone knows not to use the front brake because it will flip you over on your head . . .

  4. This is one of my pet peeves . . . A motorcycle passes me in my lane going much faster than me. I had one clip my elbow!
  5. Dark red Gen 1 turned west on SE 44th Street from S. Sooner Road. Then turned south into housing area. Anyone from here?
  6. You've now repeated this twice. This is not true and the second time makes it dishonest. Separate controls for the front and rear brakes is not a step backwards, it is the standard on most motorcycles today. ABS is added to separate brake controls on most bikes. The touring bikes with linked brakes today are not linked to the rear brake pedal as is the VR system. The 'old' brakes around here are the VR MKI and MKII linked brakes . . . Thanks greg_in_london: Quote: "The exclusive advantage to this brake system is that the brake operation requires no skill..."
  7. I installed Progressive Springs and love them. Although I like the higher front, some folks do not want the front to be higher. If you want to keep the front at about the same height, slide the fork tubes up in the triple-trees to compensate.
  8. I don't think any performance bikes have linked brakes. My 1999 Ninja does not have linked brakes and I do not feel that changing the 1985 VR brakes to operate like a 1999 Ninja going backwards. The VR front brakes feel weak because of the linked configuration. The VR linked brakes do not work very well other than in a straight line. A good braking system is repeated on other motorcycles and this system was completely discontinued. Linked brakes seem to appear on expensive touring bikes where the drivers are generally older and not very skilled. The riders that defend the linked brakes can be honest and admit they simply like the way the system works for them. Instead we have riders that want to insist the linked brakes work better.
  9. It kind of depends on the subject. Linked brakes on the VR were designed for riders that didn't know how to properly apply brakes with a front brake bias.
  10. I did this mod yesterday and only found a small improvement! What did I do wrong?
  11. Update #2: I found gas weeping from the fuel line at the petcock. The hose was disturbed when I put a hose clamp on the fuel filter. A new hose clamp is now on the petcock fuel line. I will take it for a ride later today . . .
  12. I believe when a battery falls below 9V when cranking the engine, the battery is no longer carrying the load and needs to be replaced.
  13. Update: Well, I put a better hose clamp on the fuel filter and it is no longer leaking. The smell seemed to go away for a bit . . . But came back with a vengeance. The Beast is parked outside tonight because the smell is that bad! I guess I will take stuff apart this week
  14. I'm not sure I understand the reason why these two things would minimize gas smell in the garage . . .
  15. Bingo! The inlet hose of my fuel filter appears to be weeping. Thanks Jeff
  16. It smells all the time. It started smelling last weekend after a couple-of-hundred mile day ride. The beast has 73,600+ miles on the chassis and tank. I will look under the gas tank.
  17. I took the air cleaner off today looking for a gas smell. The seal on #1 carb is not leaking (another thread covers epoxy sealing a small carb leak) and I found no gas anywhere. Started the Beast and watched for anything. #1 and #2 carbs want to puff a little white smoke (vapor?) when the throttle is twisted moderately hard from idle. All four slides are slightly open (1/4") when the engine is not running (is this normal?). There is wet oil on the tops of #1 and #2 carbs. I can see where it is coming out of the air breather and working its way through the air cleaner boots. I put a small air filter (see photo) inside the air box to try and slow this down. OK all you experts . . . Why does my VR smell like gas?
  18. I used a bolt and a couple of nuts locked together . . .
  19. Made this rally a couple of times the last few years. The photo below was my first time (2007). My Ninja was the only sport bike on Dickson! Lots of sport bikes in 2009. I was all set to ride up on the Beast when a job landed in my lap. Maybe I will see ya'll next year.
  20. 1985 Beast: 72,903 miles on the frame unknown miles on '87 1300 engine (guy said 41,000) With that said, anyone using 5 - 6 ounces of oil every 200 miles?
  21. My hammer-type impact worked on two different engines. Maybe Yammer used a bigger hammer . . .
  22. My beast did this same thing a couple of days ago. Never had the problem before. Ride without hands on the bars all the time. I'm trying to figure out what has changed that could cause this . . .
  23. A project on my to-do list is to re-install the stock compressor and solenoid valves with the air gauges. A simple toggle switch will wire up and engage the compressor, route the air to the front or back, and I will monitor the pressure on the gauges . . .
  24. I removed the class system and added air valves with pressure gauges. You can barely see them behind the seat in this picture. I run 0 psi in the front (Progressive Spring), 6 psi loaded and carrying a passenger. The back runs at 50 psi (I'm 245lbs).
