  3. Memphis to Little Rock is as flat as a tabletop with very little to see. It is beautiful from Little Rock to just over the Oklahoma state line. Most of the western half of Arkansas is the Ozark National Forest with some of the best bike roads in the country.   5. I bought a black seat and replaced the brown one on the Beast. The black seat was in twice as nice condition as the the brown one! Haven't found a black passenger backrest yet. I bid and won one on e-bay only to discover it is for the smaller trunk. If you need a black passenger backrest for a '83-'84 Venture, I got one for a very good price.
  6. Beautiful bike! The Gen 1 VR is an addiction. My '85 looked almost exactly like yours after I cleaned it up. Probably looked like yours before I cleaned it up. I have made many changes since falling for my 'cruise missile'. If you have E2 tires, I recommend changing them very soon. They are very old and mine would violently jump when changing lanes on the interstate.

  9. Air hammer worked like a charm. Used it to put on the new one. Put the old one on top and hammered on alternate sides. Then hammered the old one back off. I love power tools.

  11. I can't get the vise to grip the bearing. A local bike mechanic says I can drive it off with my air hammer . . .
  12. OK gents, I fought the forks and won the battle. My $3.45 tool to remove the damping rod worked like a charm. I figured since the forks were off and I was on a winning streak, I would tackle the steering head bearings. Reviewing this thread I almost decided to not try it. The races came out with only a little work and imagination. I used my floor jack handle to remove the top race. A round steel tube that is slightly smaller than the hole. Sharpened the edge with file, a couple of solid whacks, and the sucker is out. The lower race has two notches on the inside for a special tool. I was able to stick a pry bar in there and alternate hits between the notches. Came right out. I must say it was a bit of a disappointment. The next hurtle is getting the lower bearing off of the stem. Does it need to be pressed off?

  16. Thanks for the input Micarl. It appears I didn't have the thing assembled correctly. The damping rod is slid into the slider tube before the washer stack and 'top hat' is installed. At this point the assembled tube is installed into the lower section. After a bit of futzing the bottom bolt started and tightened. Does this sound right?
  17. I finally got the air collars off after soaking in WD40 for about 36 hours. The forks slid out OK. I made a tool that allowed me to disassemble my forks using an eight inch bolt with the nut welded on the end, a couple of extensions, a 15/16" socket, and a little tape. I had to get the dimensions for this bolt from two different threads. It seems we have a guy on here that wants to describe bolts by their shaft size For those others that are sometimes lost (like me), the bolt that fits is 5/8" shaft x 15/16" head. Now I am trying to re-assemble the forks and the bottom bolt will not start threading into the damping rod. I worked on it for about an hour. Arghhhhhhh:sign67:
  18. You have got some good info so far . . .My 2 cents: I run my rear shock at 50psi (I'm 250lbs) and the damper is set at '3'. Rear tire is run about 42psi. I like my idle around 1000. Here are a couple pictures of my driving lights;
  19. I have experienced this same attitude twice in the past few years. The ladies insisted on a sport bike, not realizing how difficult a true sport bike is to ride. Both learned on the same 250 Ninja (looks like a sport bike, sits like a standard). One moved to a 1997 750 Katana and the other moved up to a 2002 600 Bandit S. Both of these bikes look 'sporty' and sit standard.
  20. I think 15wt fork oil is too much and would cause the front end to actually be rather stiff on speed bumps. I used 10wt, 6" of space, and I am 250lbs.
  21. I did not move the trunk or anything. I removed the CLASS air compressor and associated parts to make room under the black plastic and fabricated a couple of crude brackets to hold the gauges in place.
  22. My VR was already cut up when I got it. The front and rear air lines were tied together on one air valve! I separated the lines and added a pressure gauge and valve for each line. A $17 air pump from Academy (12V) connects to a power port on my dash when I need to add air.
  23. I recently put a friend's sister on a Bandit 600S. What a perfect starter-bike!
