18-2879 K&L carb repair kit. Has all the O-rings, fuel bowl gasket, jet Block & enricher body gasket & fuel needle valve & seat. Says it is for a VMax, but all parts in this kit work on 1st gens. I have used very similar K&L kit on Tweety, this one has the enricher gasket. I have four of this kit # in hand that are going in the RSV Hybrid. Needle valve seat is generally not needed and you need a few other parts to actually replace seat. Only saw one item on Ebay right now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Vmax-CARBURETOR-REPAIR-KIT-carb-rebuild-set-vmx1200-85-07-K-and-Klein-KLY-31-/151018657385?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item232969d669&vxp=mtr I would suggest you also replace Pilot Jet #37.5 - 4G0-14142-37-A0, Cap - 22V-14968-00-00, Cap - 22U-14968-00-00 at a minimum also. How to check valve spring?
dingy replied to Godlover's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
You possibly have a bent valve(s) that are hitting the piston. There are two valve springs on each valve, one inside the other. With the dual springs, it would take a failure of both springs to cause a valve not to retract when being hand cranked. The bent valve scenario would cause an interference when hand cranking. With the valve covers removed, check and see if any of the valve clearances are way excessive. Most likely cause of a bent valve is a high power application at 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd shift when the higher gear is not fully engaged. I would look at exhaust valves closely, as the are more likely to be bent than intakes. This is do to the intake valve opens just after Top Dead Center (TDC) and closes near Bottom Dead Center (BDC), so when valve is fully open, piston is at other end of stroke. Exhaust is opposite, exhaust valve opens just after (BDC) and closes near (TDC). So the valve is open as the piston approaches it. The valves can 'float'. This occurs when the valve is accelerated at a higher than design RPM and over extends as it opens. The inertial force of the valve overcomes the ability of the spring system to instantaneously retract the valve. Gary -
The purpose of this line is to allow air to get back into tank as it is used, not to vent tank. The vent line passes thru a one-way valve near the tank (just visible in picture in 1st post). This valve will not allow fuel thru. Purpose is to shut tank flow off thru vent line in case bike is on its side. By putting a tee in near the tank, the safety usefulness of this valve is gone. Think wreck, bike has your leg pinned under it, and tank slowly starts leaking a puddle of gas. Bet you wish you left it alone. Gary

Not a word from them this week. Sent couple of emails last week with no reply. They do not respond well quite often. I tried on last buy to pay them half up front and other half when they were ready to be shipped. They would not accept order with that term though. I will try a phone call Monday. Gary -

Ignitech TCI purchase opportunity
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It is at three weeks now since I placed order & paid for them. Sent them an email Thursday, with no reply yet. They are difficult to deal with or rush. 1st time I did this, I sent them money, waited for a couple of weeks, then I could not contact them at all. I found out that in August, they shutdown and go on vacation for a week or two. I was panicking on that one. A VMax guy in Poland let me know about them. When they got back, I got TCI's. Last time I did this, they shipped them within a week. As soon as I get shipment notification I will let you know. They use DHL to ship so it doesn't take long. Customs clearance is only other obstacle. Usually, they go right through. Last time there was a day delay when they questioned classification of shipment. I have everything else for these. Gary -

The cam journals are fed by the metal 'Y' tube that bolts to the twinkie. The cams are drilled lengthwise to feed the other three journals from the ones the main feed intersects. If this rubber cap is not in place, the oil will seek the path of least resistance and exit the uncapped hole. This will cause the others in that head to not receive adequate pressure. Picture of valve cover shows a cross that presses against each one of these rubbers to keep them seated. The service manual has the oil flow diagrams in the appendices section. Gary

ADP-9 condenser
dingy replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
All it is for is to remove static in radio & CB reception/transmission. You could remove it from bike and it will run just as well. There is a 2nd smaller capacitor on the MKII bikes in left fairing pocket area also. This one is closer to the radio and does same thing as the larger one. Gary -
I attached the documentation for the one I have. It is a little harder than a plug and play harness for the 1st gen bikes, not sure about 2nd gens. There are about half a dozen specific wires you need to locate and then tap into. The light sensor needs to be mounted in a somewhat specific orientation, downward towards road surface. All of this is in directions. I can help with schematics of bikes wiring harness on locating specific wires. The Diamond Star unit I have has a feature that allows it to be turned off if desired. If I am riding in a group and not in lead I will deactivate it so as not to be a distraction to riders ahead of me. It will reset to flashing mode when key is turned off, then restarted automatically. Or you can turn it back on manually at any time be quickly cycleing hi low switch. I am firmly convinced that this makes motorists see the bike and realize its there. I know there are riders among us that do not like them. It is an individuals choice. A comment I have heard often is that traffic will mistake it for an emergency vehicle & pull over. I am sure this is an annoyance when they see it is not an emergency vehicle. But in the 3 years I think I have had it, I have only seen one car pull over and I am not sure it wasn't for another reason. The saying that Loud Pipes Save Lives is a motto many bikers seem to live by. The modulator is far and away a better device to be noticed by traffic than loud pipes will ever be. Gary

What does a fried stator look like?
dingy replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I do not agree with this statement. The output of a generator is RPM dependent. This is due to the flywheel magnets being other half of the generator system. The faster the magnets pass the coils the higher the output current. The maximum output current for a 1st gen MKII is above 4000 RPM. This is higher than the cruising RPM of 70 MPH. Gary -
If they cite you, then they are not aware of a federal law that supersedes state & local laws deeming modulators legal in all 50 states. Gary

The best place for Steve to put the adapter is at the 13 pin connector, actually a 14 pin with a keying slot. If it is done after this point the complexity increases, along with the higher risk of an improper connection being made. It would take 6 connectors to do it farther downstream, as opposed to 2 connectors at this point. Also doing it downstream farther would require more dis-assembly of the bike to get at the other connectors, as they are under the trunk. The 13 pin can be accessed by removing the seat. The non CLASS equipped bikes are same location for connector, but only have 5 wires for the tail, brake & turn signals. Pictures of each versions wiring diagram attached. Gary

Send me the carbs, I will store them for you on the RSV. They will fit. I also looked for the enricher plunger you need, but I don't have an extra. Gary
