Looked at doing this on Hybrid, but gave up on idea. 1st gen shock is longer and mounting differences were an obstacle. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=74527 Gary

Throttle cables
dingy replied to Scooter Jim's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can order custom cables from Motion Pro if you want to eliminate junction block. I was considering doing this to the Hybrid RSV/1st Gen Venture/VMax I am building, but have decided against it. The carbs are more difficult to remove without junction block. I will need to pull them probably a couple of times to get jetting correct right away. The link mralex714 posted above shows a 1st gen 83-85 or VMax non cruise junction block. This uses different cables than what is on cruise equipped bikes. The cable ends that go into this block have a much smaller ferule on them than cruise equipped bikes which have a barrel connector. They are not interchangeable. http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/category/cables/?gclid=CMzCtdOj3roCFQ8OOgodVG0AOA Thread linked below I started a week ago about eliminating junction block. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=82951 Gary -
Aftermarket TCI available!
dingy replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can run the TCI without the Boost Sensor, but it will effect power when bike is under load. I have a few spare MAP sensors if you want to get one. I also have extra wires with terminals on them for the 20 pin main connector into the TCI. Ignitech is selling these with the wiring harness setup to use the stock sensor. I elected to furnish new MAP sensors with units I resell, due to many of the original stock boost sensors have been known to fail. Also the stock sensor is a 12vdc based unit. Ignitech has told me this will work with their unit. When I get them, Ignitech wires the harness to not use stock sensor and I add the 3 wires to run the aftermarket MAP sensor. Your price from Ignitech without the MAP sensor is not much less with shipping than what I charge for TCI with a new MAP sensor. This is due to I get a decent discount from Ignitech due to having bought as many as I have, and I get 20 at a time, so shipping is far less per unit. Shipping is about $68 usd for 1 unit. I am not making a huge amount of money on these, but I am making enough to make it worth my time. There is a VMax rebuilder in North Royalton, Oh. that is selling the basic unit for $495, without MAP sensor or other items I furnish. http://planetvmax.com/store/#!/~/product/category=3613426&id=15357907 Gary -
Aftermarket TCI available!
dingy replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes ... and no. I discovered tonight that TPS in that position won't clear valve covers. It would be alright if there were VBoost intakes installed as this raises carbs over an inch higher. I didn't have carbs fully seated when I test fit it. I am going with plan C, maybe it's D or E, and installing TPS on throttle junction block. I 3D printed a spool with an extended arm on it out of ABS material which will drive TPS. I printed one each with arm coming out front or rear of junction block so I could use whichever one fit better into bike. There is almost no pressure on TPS to rotate it so this will work OK. Gary -
I will try to get them ordered 1st week of December. With the 85 I would think you would be having problems with the bike if it still has an 83 TCI in it. The 83's with original carbs pulled vacuum from above the throttle plate on #2 carb. 83 was only year to have this port, other than California bikes for smog system. The 84-93 bikes get vacuum from below the throttle plates. These 2 sources of vacuum have an opposite pressure curve. The vacuum is supposed to advance timing when bike is under load via the boost sensor. What yours is probably doing is not advancing timing at all due to load, which will not allow it to perform to motors ability. Gary

Sorry about your guys lock, it's a upside year. The Browns are in 2nd place in the AFC North division ahead of Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Within a game of leading Cincinnati. Who would have thought that would happen. Gary

The tanks lower edge is right at the top of diaphragm covers. The air cleaners will not be visible at all. There is a pocket up under the tank that allows room for the air cleaners to set. Couple of pictures, but without carb rack installed when I had junk block in bike originally. Picture of tank is from front of bike without triple trees installed. The pocket is partially visible on either side of the triple tree neck. This extends length of tank. Thanks for suggestion though, I am open to any ideas. Gary

Mike, I can send you cable ends with adjusters on them and a stock set of 1st gen cables. I will need a slightly longer set of the same set up as the 1st gen cables. Only should require outer jacket , wire and ferrules on the ends. I am on plan C at this point. The VMax junction block uses different cable ends at the junction block than what the upper cables have. If I stick with the standard Venture junction block, it should be fairly easy to just get longer lowers. I now think that the junction block will be up under the RSTD tank and out of site. I had the cables routed incorrectly on the bike and thought junction block would be farther to front. Going by the cable routing in the RSV manual, junction block will not be seen. Seems a good idea to keep junction block to make carb removal easier. I am almost certain these carbs will be out and in several times to get jetting correct. Picture attached of cables, short set is stock 1st gen, long set is stock 2nd gen and extra ends I have. I want to put an adjustable end on both the push & pull cables to help compensate for different configuration. Thanks, Gary

Better get a new battery for the Beltone, it went to overtime. Yet another tragic loss for WVU. Hardly what we here in Buckeye country, call "A Spanking" !!! Check with Penn State for what a "Spanking" looks like. Gary

"89 Starter Relay ???
dingy replied to CAZCO's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not rebuildable that I know of. It is a sealed unit. Thread linked below shows pictures of one I dissected. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=64567 Gary -
What is more amazing about this picureless story is that WVU 'spanked' anyone. Gary

V-Max starter
dingy replied to mralex714's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Finally remembered to check parts fiche and it does look like change was made to 4 brush starter on VMax's in 1993. The brush set p/n's changed that year. Yamaha doesn't list numbers for housings. Couple of part fiches I checked all list same number for complete starter assy, but I think all they are showing replacement as a 4 brush. Gary -
Depends what you want to draw/model. If you just need short term 3D, Solid Edge offers 45 trial license. About $5500 if you want to buy it. Not really a beginner package though. Equivalent to better known Solid Works CAD. http://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/en_us/products/velocity/solidedge/monthly-subscriptions/free-trial.shtml?stc=usiia400139 They also have a decent free 2D package. http://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/en_us/products/velocity/solidedge/free2d/ Gary

I am going to go with the VMax junction box, much more compact than the Venture. And, I don't have to reinvent the wheel. Picture from parts fiche attached. I can send motion Pro lower cables of a Venture, so they can see just what I need. I can sent them lengths from the RSV cables. Be a better way to go, I will no doubt have carbs off several times to get jetting dialed in. I had to use 3" tall pods to be able to get air cleaners under fuel tank. I have put air correctors in carbs that VMax builder recommended over one of air jets in each carb. This bike will have a traditional style fuel tank, so it is cramped above carbs. Not enough room for a VBoost on this one. Will probably get NO2 at some point. Gary

Attached is a picture of an 83 junction block. Rectangular block in middle of picture. Cables at junction block had a different end on them than cruise equipped bikes. Gary

I will need to get at least a pair of custom throttle cables made for the RSV Hybrid project. I am considering eliminating the throttle junction block interface and running new, longer cables directly from throttle to carbs. Motion pro will make a custom set of cables with needed ends on them for a reasonable price. The RSV throttle cables from the existing junction block will not fit the 1st gen carbs that are on bike. A pair of 1st gen cables from junction block are not long enough to reach carbs. Bike will not have cruise control, so that seems to eliminate purpose of junction block. The early 1st gens without cruise did have a quad cable setup though, but with a different type of junction block. There does not appear to be a mechanical advantage to using junction block. Pulley in block has a 1:1 ratio. The elimination of the junction block will eliminate the need to hide it on the Hybrid, due to the lack of the full fairings. Any opinions on this. Sometimes the voices in my head are wrong !! Gary

Just a belated word of caution, if locktite comes in contact with any plastic parts, it will eat the plastic away like acid. It takes a while, if you might have, it should be disassembled and cleaned. Nice locking accessories. Papa Smurf would be proud !!! Gary

V-Max starter
dingy replied to mralex714's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
91 might be a 2 brush. I think they went to 4 brush in 93. I will check tonight when I get home. Gary -
I knew an RSV was low & slow, but what a surprise they only get 14 MPG !!!! Gary

The speedometer senor is located in the cluster over top of the speedo cable. speedo cable rotates a magnet which triggers a reed switch to count front wheel revolutions. I have not dissected a starting relay yet, so I don't know how complicated they are inside. Have opened a fuel pump relay and it has a fairly complex circuit board in it for what it does. Gary
