I am making heavy duty 4 gauge sets of 1st gen (83-93) battery cables. Included are three cables, positive battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter and negative battery to ground. 40 amp main fuse, ATC style with 2 fuses furnished (1 spare). Harness leads are 12 gauge wire. The harness terminals have the mating housing that will plug into the existing connectors on the harness. No soldering or cutting required. #4 gauge welding cable, 364 strand copper, EPDM insulation oil & flame resistant, black. -50 deg C to +105 deg C. Silver brazed barrel terminals, tinned electrolytic copper, 1/4" hole on main cables. All connections are crimped and soldered. Main cables are hydraulic crimped. Main cable connections are covered with flame retardant dual wall polyolefin heat shrink, mil spec rated. I could not locate boots for the 6 ring terminal ends. $50 a set includes priority shipping to US address. Other locations will be whatever postage increase costs. (Probably 1st class outside US.) I can add an extra un-fused 14 gauge 12 inch wire if desired to both battery terminals for $2 a set additional. Pictures of completed set attached. Pictures show additional 12 inch lead (optional). Last person that was going to do this was Snaggletooth last year. I have talked to him several times and he is no longer pursuing this. Gary

brack upgrad on 83
dingy replied to hell yea's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
86-93 lower fork tubes and internal parts, there were at least three changes to the lower lock parts. Upper tubes should interchange. Are the brakes you want to use the radial style? These are 1 piece caliper body. If they are, it will take a set of custom machined adapters. R1's or 2nd gen VMax 6 pot calipers need 298 mm dia x 5mm rotors. I am using a set from an 2003 FJR, floating rotors. Also will need a front master from an 86-93 Venture. Possibly will need new brake lines, I don't know if stock lines will reach new calipers. I had a set of S.S. lines made. Delinking brakes would be a real good idea at same time. Pictures attached of what I did to Tweety. These border on too much brakes. Two fingers on lever is more than sufficient. The front brakes on Tweety are main reason I am reluctant to let anyone ride it. They can hurt you. 1st picture is of set of 2011 R1 6 pot radial calipers that are on Tweety. 2nd picture is of a set of 1996 YZF750 6 pot standard 2 piece calipers. These will bolt onto a set of 86-93 forks. Very good brakes. These are going on RSV Hybrid. 3rd picture is of R1 brakes on Tweety. Last pictures are of adapter bracket I designed to mount calipers. They will all fit any hole, just wear in a little different. I have 4 of them sitting here if you want them. No charge. Gary

What engine will fit 1st Gen Venture
dingy replied to JTVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The rear tire looks sort of skinny. May not be right size. Anything can be fixed if you have time, patience & a PayPal account. I'd like to have windshield, haven't seen one like that. Gary -
262 is smallest I have, if that will help. You might want to get several buckets as they vary ever so slightly in size. Gary
-
Do you know what size shims you need? I have a few spares I could check. Also have spare buckets. Gary

Front End Shake at 65
dingy replied to FEW's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Is the new tire you put on the front tire, you were not clear on that. If it wasn't, cupping of a front tire that otherwise is in good shape will degrade handling. Something else to look at is the rear suspension. Check that the shock pivot links are good. Also the rear swing arm can cause handling issues. Verify there is absolutely zero play in the swing arm. This can sometimes be corrected be servicing the swing arm bearings and properly setting bearing torque. Air compressor is optional, most non Royale ventures did not have a compressor. The shocks/forks can still be aired up with the installation of a Shrader type air fitting from a non compressor equipped bike. These were most common in the MKI models (83-85). Gary -
It has been mentioned quite a bit before. You 2nd genner's will become more aware of the finer points of working on a classic machine as your machines continue aging. At least those that don't trade them for an HD. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=57988 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46896 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=72767 Gary

The excel spreadsheet in the thread linked below is useful for resizing your shims if you need to. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43410 Gary

There was a thread on here about a month or two ago that discussed acid packs & AGM batteries. Gary
-
I would say it is not an AGM. Link is to K-Mart web page for gold battery and no mention of AGM. Gary http://www.kmart.com/diehard-gold-automotive-battery-group-size-65-price/p-082W839960888180P?prdNo=33&blockNo=33&blockType=G33

It was connector I had at time to be able to unplug the gear indicator LED's I added to cluster housing. Used a hard drive connector on present way it is hooked up. Left is 1st, middle is 3rd & right on is 5th gear. Much easier to see than CMU indicator. Gary

I think the reserve was added midway through the 83 production run. I know the early 84's had reserve petcock. I had one of those last year. Easiest way to know if the bike has a reserve petcock is to look at side cover. The covers that had reserve feature have a 'notch' for easier access to petcock. 1st picture is of Tweety in early years, side cover is not notched. 2nd picture of yellow bike, which is not Tweety, has notched cover. Waste of time to use the zerk fitting in many peoples opinion. Grease doesn't get close to where it needs to be unless you put a quart in there. Gary
