I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the clutch side switch housing that came off of a 1983 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. It is fairly lengthy, 37 pictures, but thorough. I would recommend removing switch from bike if you perform this cleaning. There are a number of small springs and ball detents that are very easy to lose unless you have a large well lit working area. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch in another thread. Picture below is of the switch detailed in this PDF file. This is the style of switch that the turn signal button is pressed downward to cancel. 38772.pdf

I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the front and rear brake switches and the clutch switch that came off of a 1983 Venture. The switches should be the same for the 1983-1985 models. The switches detailed are from a Venture without cruise control, switches from cruise control equipped bikes are different. Cruise control equipped switches will be similar to the 1986-1993 switches shown in another post. The pictures show the switches completely removed from the bike. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch and the Clutch side switch in other threads. 38771.pdf

Something else that I just thought of: I am sort of old school, went to Industrial Electronics Tech school in early 70's and worked mostly with analog meters (type with a needle and scale). I use mostly a Simpon 260 VOM, I have a Beckman digital but I prefer the analog. I don't know if this testing will work with a digital ohm meter. Some of the more tech type guys here may need to chime in on this. Gary

What you will see when you hook an ohm meter up to a functioning capacitor is an in initial low resistance reading that then tapers off to infinite. This is due to the initial rush of current into the cap, then as it charges the current flow subsides. It is this high initial current flow that causes the meter to show low resistance. Prior to testing a capacitor like this I would recommend shorting the two leads together to discharge any stored charge in the cap. This is to prevent ohm meter damage. For an open cap you would see a high reading that does not change. With an shorted cap you will see a zero or low reading that does not drop. Use the highest ohms scale on meter and drop to lower scale levels repeating test.

I don't believe that you can check a capacitor with an ohm meter accurately. The reason being that an ohm meter has a bettery in its circuitry to provide current flow to resistors being checked. It is the amount of this current flow that is used by the ohm meter bridge circuits to calculate the resistance value. The problem with checking a capacitor is the battery in the ohm meter starts charging the capacitor, thus giving a misleading current flow reading. A capacitor definition is an electrical device characterized by its capacity to store an electric charge. The ohm meter is providing a source of electrical energy to charge this capacitor. In theory a capacitor should have an infinite ohms reading, as in an open circuit. The capacitor internals are two metallic surfaces separated by an insulator. Gary

Rosebud, I stopped by the local recruiting station this morning and talked to the Marine recruiter. He said that he would try to get a copy of this for you. He said that they do get copies of this magazine. Also stopped at Amvets post and talked to post commander. He seemed confident he could locate a copy. He was going to put a call out to the other local posts such as VFW and try to get one. I will let you know if either of these people come through. Gary

The good news is; 59J-88188-00-00 (this appears to be official Yamaha P/N, this is same # as in parts fiche.) This is the part # from Babbits Sport Center It is on the Audio 1 page Item # 81, Filter, Noise This is from Bike Bandit 294446-001 Same page as Babbits The bad news is; $70.00 & they both show as unavailable. There might be one available on ebay now. Do a search on this item # 150379439388 The item at the top of picture appears to be one. I have never seen one of these so this is a guess. Maybe one of the owners of these bikes can verify this. He wants $69.00 for all the relays or best offer. One other thing to keep in mind, there are two items on the bike referred to as 'Noise Filter'. One is in the power supply feeding the radio, and this is the other. They are not interchangeable. The second one is item # 52 in Babbits & Bike Bandits listings. I also looked at the original schematic in the service manual for this bike. There they call it a condenser, in the parts fiche they call it a Filter, noise. I am fairly sure these two are one and the same. Gary- 17 replies

Would we be helping the overall site by clicking on the ad in the upper right of screen. Put another way, does this site get paid by the number of clicks on these ads?? I have no problem hitting these a couple of times a day if it helps out.

I did not mean to imply that condensers are obsolete. There are in fact, many in the TCI unit as well as the flasher relays (83's) The original poster made a reference in a later post to condensers on point systems, I was stating that that is not the purpose of the condenser in question.- 17 replies

Has nothing to do with points, that was a different era of use for condensers. It smooths out the spikes in voltage caused by various things such as a relay operating, coils operating etc.- 17 replies

The condenser (fancy name for capacitor) is positioned across the positive and negative side of the battery. Its purpose is to reduce radio noise. Does not affect running in any way.- 17 replies

MRK 2 Questions
dingy replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If the EAND valves are interchangeable with the standard ones on my 83, I would be very interested in changing these. A problem I have with the 83-85 system is that with the split brake system, if you only apply either the front or the rear brake then the anti dive is only activated on the one side thus causing the forks to operate different from each other. This is due to the anti dives being hydraulically operated on the 83 to 85 models and the right and left valves are not tied in any way. The 86-93 ones could be activated by adding a relay to the brake light system to control them, which is the same method of control as the 86-93 versions. -
From your statement shown at the bottom of this post, your concern is that when you rev the engine from idle, you see the bulbs increase in brightness. If this assumption is correct, then read on. At idle your generator & rectifier combination is not putting out at their maximum potential. As you increase the RPM's the generator armature spins faster inside of the field coil of the stator, thus generating more current. This increase in current causes the voltage level of the system to rise to a level where the regulator then clamps the rising voltage to prevent damage to components. This maximum voltage is in the range of 14.5 volts. At idle the generator & rectifier are lucky to be putting out enough to sustain the load on the battery. This increase in voltage, which is about 1 1/2 to 2 volts is about a 15% overall increase. As the system voltage increases, so does the current flow through the bulbs. This is enough to see the variation in output from the lights. Looking at the chart below, which is cut out of the service manual, you will see that maximum output is around 4000 RPM's. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/rectifieroutput1986-1993-YamahaVent.jpg

Actually, mine was very supportive. Even after some early wrecks. Picture below is of his race triumph on the right. Trailer behind was his also. Other two bikes are friends. This was taken in 1949 prior to race at Daytona, which he led for a while. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/BeforeDaytona1949.jpg

I need a few parts for my cruise addition project. I am adding a 1988 cruise control to my 1983 plain jane I need the bracket that mounts to the triple tree that the cruise light pod screws to. Also the rubber grommet that goes around the ignition switch. They are items #13 & 14 on attached PDF of parts listing. Anything from 1986 thru 1993 should work. Also I need a set of throttle cables from a bike that had cruise (83-93). I have the pulley box that connects the upper and lower cables. I didn't realize cables were different until I got the bike stripped down yesterday. Will the cables from a second gen work for what I need? I see several sets of these on Ebay for very little. They look very similar in pictures. Also could use a 1983 TCI unit. A clutch side foam grip would also be nice. I got the throttle side one with the right hand electrical control. Also, I bought a rear shock with a spring. The one I bought is from a 1987. I did not get the air line that goes into the right top of the shock. The one on my 83 that only has the air bag goes into the left side of the shock and is too short. Or, if anyone can tell me what the threads are going into the shock, maybe I can get an adapter. I have an extra fork tube air set with shrader valve. I might be able to couple to existing line with one of the air lines from this if I knew thread size. If you have any of these PM or email me price with shipping. Thanks Gary

Started riding go-carts when I was 5. Dad, brother and I each had one eventually. We had a 1/4 mile dirt track in back end of 3 acre country home. Picture is of one we had which was rather crude, hand throttle, small engine. My Dad was a pro dirt track rider in 40 & 50's. Sponsored by Triumph. He raced at tracks in eastern US including Daytona Beach. Some pictures in on my profile page. I started mini bikes at about 10 years old. Made By Rupp. First street bike was Honda 350. Then several Honda 750's after that. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/1stgocart_1-1959.jpg
