Rear brake problem
dingy replied to dthomso1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Doug, Attached is a thread that will show the axle re-assembly order. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=515 Just a question here, Is the brake pad installed correctly? Are they the correct pads? If you still have your old pads, compare them. In your first picture, it looks like the bottom of the pad isn't coming down below the lower surface (Inner I.D. of contact area) of the rotor. I don't know if you could even install it wrong, but the picture puzzles me. Do you have an MKI rotor installed? Also, another interesting thing is the orientation of the Yamaha logo, it should be parallel to ground. Do you maybe have front and rear caliper switched? Bleeder valve should be at highest point on caliper body. Gary -
Below is a link to the schematic for the RSV's Fan circuit is located in lower right corner. As Goose said you can pull the connector at the thermostat and jumper the two wires together with a paperclip on the wire connector. Key will need to be in ON position. Or as SkyDoc said you can pull the connection that goes to the fan and put positive on one side and negative on the other, Black wire is ground & Blue wire is positive. Whichever one is easier to get at. To me the thermostat is easier, all you have to do is jumper it. 99-09 Yamaha Royal Star Venture Wiring Diagram Rev B.pdf Gary

It was missing the about 2" long spacer that slides over axle. On Vmax & FJR rear ends it is not pressed into housing like it is on Ventures, so I didn't get it when I bought rear end. Gary

A few things come to mind that would cause a flex in front end resulting in uneven brake contact. Wheel bearings worn. Metal slides in the forks being worn. Loose triple trees. A loose fork brace. Improper torque on front axle. Gary
-
I don't know why they would be different, but the parts fiche has different numbers for the rubbers on the right & left sides. Just one of the things I learned during my rebuild. Gary

Squeeze is absolutely correct in saying not to ride it with a loose rear axle. My point in saying to loosen the axle a bit and see if it changes the rear wheel drag was related to the problems I had when I put the FJR rear end in my bike. The rear wheel would start to bind as I tightened the axle down. For a short period of time I put my stock rear end back in until I was shown what the problem was after posting on here about my struggles with it.. Gary

Everything should then be riding on the two bearings as intended. Yes, 110 ft/lbs is a bunch of torque. For giggles, you could try backing of the torque a little and see if the wheel spins any easier. It's only going to cost you a cotter pin to see what effect it has. Gary

83 Scratched Fork Tube
dingy replied to DesertRider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Looking at the parts fiche, it shows the part number changed in 1984. I have no idea as to what changed. !983 # 26H-23110-00-00 1984 # 41R-23110-00-00 I have an set of forks that came off of my 83 when I put MKII brakes on it. They look to be in undamaged condition in seal area. There is some marking where the triple tree attached, which I would think is normal. PM me if interested. Gary -
Boomer, You must not have looked at all 1670 pictures Sleeperhawks Mechanic posted then. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50129 Gary http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20MD%202010/IMG_8651.jpg

I just pulled the drain bolt out of a spare water pump housing and the lip on the washer faced towards the bolt head. Gary -
1984 Venture Royale ignition coil.

Here is another picture I found with the coils still in & all wiring still in. This is on an 83, so there is an odd looking throttle cable connector in there. Yup, there are coils in there. Let me know how that plan of not pulling fairings works out for you boys. Gary -

Don't know if this will help you at all. In the picture the coils have been removed already, but you can see the mounting points for them on the left side of picture, above the YICS chamber (only on 83-85's) Gary -
Same place it is on a 1st gen., below the seat. Lower center of gravity. This is a thing of beauty, beauty being in the eyes of the beholder. Gary

Look at this post from earlier today. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=50354 Yes, you can use the 86 TCI in an 83 engine, for proper hookup you should get a vacuum hose that goes from sensor to intake boot. 83 & 88 coils are the same part numbers, didn't check them all. They are the same. Same vacuum sensor. Different hook up point for vacuum. 83's are above throttle plates, 84-93's are below. TCI's are different. See above post. Your wiring harness will plug into the 83 thru 89 TCI with no modifications, same with coils. You should think about rejetting 1200cc carbs. 1300's have stock 125 mains, and could stand a little higher. 1200's had 117.5 mains. Gary

4 band clamps holding it to top of carbs?? Gary -
You can use an 84-89 box on an 83. You can not use an 90-93 unit. However, due to the 84-89 bikes not having the carbs drilled for the vacuum line, you can not use an 83 TCI on 84-89 bikes without drilling for the vacuum port. To use the 84-89 TCI on an 83 bike you need to block the port on the carb bank where the vacuum line hooks to. Then the line will be reattached below the carbs to the rubber intake manifold. On the 84-89's there is a plastic restrictor to help smooth out the pulsing in the vacuum. It is not a valve, just a plastic tube with a small hole inside. It also serves to connect the two different size vacuum lines together. I am currently running an 86 TCI on my bike, but also have the original 83 TCI that I have also ran on it. It runs just as well with either unit. Gary

My bike is just fine, one of the oldest on here, but one of the quickest. Have 2300 miles since the rebuild this winter. I am actually running out of stuff to do on it. Kicked a Royal Star's ass yesterday with it. Also was faster than a 100th anniversary Dyna with a stage 4 kit in it., 1550 cc. This bike used to whoop me like a red headed step child last couple of years. Gary
