1st gen MKII carb question
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I measured the throats on the bottom of the carb rack. Measures 1.370" inches, 34.925mm. 34mm would be 1.338" Gary -
1st gen MKII carb question
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I received the 86 carb set today. They are 35mm, as opposed to what the service manual calls out at 34mm. Also got the Vboost unit and VMax air cleaner box. Got a bonus with the Vmax air cleaner, it has a nice K&N filter in it. Gary -
It looks like a Dunkin Doughnuts being torn down in background. Gary

That has got to be a record for getting to a Canadian address. Dog sled teams must be rested up over the summer. I do have some more wrenches coming as well. Gary

That larger tube in the strand is a resistor/diode combination to lower the 120V to 5-12V and turn the AC wall current to DC. I have taken 60 light LED strings and cut them in half for some infinity mirrors I am making for Christmas gifts. That works because there are two of the diode rectifier tubes, one for each 30 run of lights. If you are not good with electricity, this might not be an ideal project for you, but it may be a learning experience. seemingly appropriate emoticon ! Gary

HELP! Valve adjusment tool
dingy replied to TomMar's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Here is a link to the spreadsheet that will assist with those pesky math calculations when replacing the shims. This spreadsheet is for Venture heads only, 1st & 2nd gen's, if you have Vmax heads there is a different file due to exhaust valves settings are different. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43407 Gary -

I have order and requests in place for the first 50 wrenches of this group that I ordered as of this morning. Most of them shipped out today, the rest will go when I get the mailing envelopes I need later this week. I placed another order for 50 more today and should receive them fairly quickly, judging by the last orders time. I am going to try to sell them on the FJR & Virago sites as well if they will let me. Thanks to all that have helped make this project as successful as it has been. I have sold 200 of these so far. This means a lot of Yamaha riders can better maintain their bikes. I have also looked into getting a valve shim tool made, but the quotes I have gotten back are not good so far. Gary

The project is never complete. Longer than a Honey to do list. Gary

Does anyone know what size the MKII carbs are. The service manual shows they are 34mm Mikuni's, but I have been told that they are 35mm Mikuni's. I would like to put a set of 35mm's on the bike, but I would want to verify this before getting a set. The Venture History tab also shows them being 34mm. I know the sliders are not interchangeable between MKI & MKII's which might indicate a venturi size change. Gary

Things To Do While Waiting For Coffee To Brew...

Speaking of boo boo's, How is the toe? Is it still attached? Gary -
I will be shipping the wrenches out to everyone that I have received payment from in Tuesday's mail. They are packaged and ready to go. I was short a few mailing envelopes, so I got enough from a store to get these out until my supply of mailers arrives Wednesday. I will send out confirmation # tonight for ones shipped. I will still have wrenches avaliable if there are others interested in one. Gary

The supplier of the wrenches said they were ready. I am going to try to get them tonight if I get off work in time. Gary

How do I tie a 1st Gen in a trailer?
dingy replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am going out on a limb and suggest a different way to tie the front down. I prefer to hook a SOFT sling around the forks just above the fork brace. Support the bike only with the tie downs so it is not riding on the center or kick stands. You need heavy straps, at least 2" wide. The logic behind this is then the front end of the bike can ride on its suspension and move up and down. If you go across the triple tree and the suspension compresses when going over a bump, there is the risk that the tie downs will become slack enough to allow the hook to disengage. I brought the parts bike I got from MiCarl back from Detroit last year over some very rough roads and it rode fine. We have trailered my Venture and an HD Dyna this way several times with no problems. Gary -
1st Gen passenger foot rests
dingy replied to paysaw's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The 86-93 units will bolt right up to the frame of a 83-85. You will need to make a separate hanger for the rear exhaust mount. About 1" x 4" long x 1/8" thick material. Last picture shows a partial view of mount. Gary -
1st gen head gasket question
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Brian, that's what I needed to know. VMax rebuilder said the stock sets were .027" for the VMaxs. I can get a .010" thick copper head gasket. Which would be a decrease of .017". Head gasket route would be simpler than having heads or block milled. I have run the numbers in a compression ratio calculator I have and the gain in compression would be very minor from a gasket change. Milling or gasket change also induces valve timing retardation. Domed pistons would be the better way to go but cost is beyond me. I may look at forcing air into the filter box by ducting air into it from the two intakes that are on the sides of the fairing. These are non-functioning now that I have removed the knee fairings. From the pictures I took last winter during the rebuild, it looks like I could run 1 1/2" flexible tubing into either side of the air box and connect this to the two front air intakes. This will help force air into the air box similar to a cowl induction system. This may help the motor breathe better. With the setup I have now, the motor is not as sensitive to the changes in air box restriction like a stock Venture is. This may help, it may not. Something else to play with. It is something that would not be verifiable with a dyno test though, due to no air flow on dyno. The bike is pulling very strong up to about 8,300 to 8,500 RPM's, then it starts to flatten out. This seems to me to indicate it is starving for air flow. I have had it up to 9,500 RPM's but it is out of torque at that point. I am going to mount a VBoost system and possibly a set of stock VMax carbs this winter. Also considering removing exhaust collector and running 4 separate exhaust pipes out rear end. This appears doable, but I need to do more research on what if any benefit there may be. I have a local shop that can do the bending for me. I need to layout system in my CAD program to see about clearances. If nothing else it would be a unique look & sound. I would use 1 1/2" S.S. tubing. This could be polished out to a nice finish. If money was no object, which it is, there is a fuel injection system for VMAX's available. Would run around $1800. FI is to costly for the modest power gains. Good for gas mileage and the environment though. http://roadstercycle.com/yamaha_vmax_fuel_injector_cv_car.htm Gary -
Randy, I have both digital and dial calipers and I prefer the dial set myself. Digital calipers are nice since you can convert from metric to imperial units, but other than that I like the dial units. With digital calipers, you need to be very consistent with the pressure you apply when taking a reading or they will vary a thousand of an inch or more. I would suggest that you get at least an 8" set. The longer length does come in useful occasionally. Gary

Does any one know what the stock head gasket thickness is? I am going to pull the heads off my motor this winter & put new valve guide seals in it. I am getting a some smoke from exhaust under acceleration. Compression is near spec. on all cylinders, so I am confident rings are OK. They measured OK when I had engine apart last winter. Heads came off a 97 VMax that was supposed to only have 17,000 miles on it. While I have the heads off, I want to increase the compression ratio on the motor. One way to do this is to mill the heads or block. The other way is to put a thinner head gasket on. Head gaskets are available in varying thicknesses. One of the VMax guys gave me the thickness for VMax gaskets, but it seems thinner than the set I put on this winter. Also going to put a Vboost on while I am in there. I am going to run it from the Ignitech TCI module. This work should put to rest that nasty rumor that Brown 1st gen's are the quickest that has been coming from someone in West Virginia. Gary
