Ignitech TCI is not tied into fuel pump on 83-89 models. On 90-93 Ventures, it does control fuel pump. Gary

Attached is a PDF file with instructions on settings for Com port. I have only seen (that I recall) issues with XP and windows 8. Windows 7 seems to find cable OK. There is a setting in menus to tell software to look at all available com ports and find an open one. Call me if you need help, evenings are best. Gary

1 1/2 year old thread, he either fixed it or is used to it by now. Would be great if people that asked for help and fixed problem reported back what it was. I suspect sometimes not wanting to appear "dumb" is part of reason we don't hear what it took to fix things. It would help the next person though if he were able to find thread related to new question with a resolution to issue. Gary

Came close to loosing a saddlebag on Tweety. I only noticed mount was loose because I removed saddlebags to get painting done at WNY rally. Pictures show back side of removed saddlebag. There are 2 posts that attach to saddlebag. On the end of each post is a threaded stud that screws into post. I was missing one of the studs and other was loose. I had not loosened these when I painted bike a couple of years ago. I had to use pliers to tighten as there in no provision for a screwdriver to be used. Red loctited them, won't come loose again. I had a spare set of bags to get missing part from luckily. Gary

All numbers shown are for 1st gen with 7/8" bars. Search ebay for "KURYAKYN ISO GRIPS YAMAHA 6341" These are black set, includes throttle tube. Search ebay for "KURYAKYN ISO GRIPS YAMAHA 6318" This is black throttle boss. Search ebay for "KURYAKYN ISO GRIPS YAMAHA 6325" These are chrome set, includes throttle tube. Picture attached is of black set & throttle boss for 7/8" bars. Some dust on them. Gary

The tube I have has an oval also, so that must be the way they are made. It's only on the pull cable, curious as to why it is like that. I have Kuryakin's on both bikes, I'll try and remember if I am in there to look. Sylvester will be best chance to check. Gary

Early 83's engines same as VMax?

Pistons in VMax have different doming profile than Ventures, picture attached. There have been a number of rod revisions in the VMax & probably Ventures. Crank in all 1st gen VMax & Ventures is same p/n. Rotor is interchangeable but diff. p/n. may be lighter . The only difference between Venture 83 motor & 84/85 motor is TCI that I am aware of. Also minor difference in carb vacuum port location on #2 carb. 83 had port above butterfly. 84 - 93 used sync port for TCI vacuum. An 83-89 TCI can be used on an 83 motor with vacuum relocation. An 83 TCI is difficult to put on an 84-89 Venture due to vacuum port is not there on later carbs. Vmax blocks have an additional oil galley feed line than dumps oil near stator area. Heads between VMax & Venture is where a lot of power difference lies. In combination with head difference, the cylinder cover for draining coolant from cylinder jackets is different. Different, but interchangeable valve covers. Air intake is improved on VMaxs in addition to all VMaxs have 35mm carbs. 83-85 Ventures had 34mm carbs. Jetting is much different. Mains are 117.5 or 125 on Ventures and 150 or 152.5 (may be others?) on VMax. Exhaust system is much improved for power on VMax. They will not fit on a Venture though due to mono shock difference. Transmission gearing is almost identical ratios between Venture & VMax. Not enough difference to be worth experimenting with swapping. Final drive is higher ratio on VMax, one less tooth on pinion. In regards to another post you had on keeping middle gear set with transmission set, it is best to keep a used set together. Each pair will have a slightly different wear pattern. Ebayer's will break parts down to lowest denominator, they are interested in what will sell, not what is a mechanically sound practice. All side covers will interchange from VMax TO venture. The 83-85 Venture clutch cover will NOT fit on a 86-93 Venture or VMax, it is slightly narrower. I believe the later VMaxs had a spin on auto oil filter, not positive though. Gary -

valve cover bolt stripped

The valve cover bolt screws into the cam cap cap which can be somewhat easily. Cap can then be helicolled on bench and replaced. Gary -

On the six pin connector, there is a blank space, wire above that space is common to all 4 coils. It is black, but often difficult to see color due to somewhat dirty conditions in area where connector is situated. There is also another 6 pin connector in same area which is for gear indicator if your bike has a digital gear indicator. This on has all 6 pins used. I don't think the 83's had this, but it could have been modified in the last 31 years. With one meter lead connected to black wire, then check each of the other 4 wires. Reading should be between 93.5 ~ 126.5 ohms each. My personal opinion is it doesn't matter if reading is to high or low end of range as long as all 4 are consistent. Next attach one lead of meter to clean frame ground (or negative battery terminal) and check each of the 5 wires for any continuity to ground. Highest ohm setting on meter preferable if it is not an auto range style meter. Reading should be infinite (not 0 or near) on any wire to ground. This is starkly different than procedure for testing stator coils. But that is not your issue, so I won't muddy the waters with that. Just threw that out there since both components are in the same area and wires exit at same point. I do have a couple of sets of pickup coils if you are sure that is problem, but it is a job to replace them. Both left side motor covers need to be removed for access. Both will need new gaskets. Also look at contact mating surfaces on 6 pin connector for dirt, grease or corrosion. Also check connectors on TCI plugs for dirty or corroded connectors. 6 pin connector on TCI is one that pickup coils feed into. You can also check ohm readings at TCI on cable end of the 6 pin connector. Do not take resistance readings into the TCI itself. On the 6 pin TCI connector, all six are used. The Black with white tracer wire is not involved with pickup coils. Use black as common again. Gary

Don, Do you know if the motor check light functioned with the Dyna on Yammers RSV? If it didn't then I think there is a good possibility the Ignitech will also work on the 2nd Gens. I won't know for sure until I get the Hybrid bike I am slowly building, running to know. I already have several adapter cables that will allow direct plug-n-play with the stock harness for the 2nd gen. Gary
