I had a similar situation only on ice instead of oil. January '87 riding a 1982 Maxim 650 from Phoenix to Orlando, around 11:30 at night on I-10 went under an overpass in a turn about 65 mph. As always I was riding in the left hand side of the right lane. I found the ice and started sliding toward the edge of the road. I wasn't going down, just sliding through the turn. Fortunately I ran out of ice before I ran out of road. When I got passed the ice the bike and I were still upright. I gave credit to the great gentleman upstairs and thanked Him many times as I continued down the road.

All those great tunes and no one mentioned one of the greatest driving/riding songs of all time. REO Speedwagon and "Roll With The Changes"

My new bell arrived yesterday. Outstanding quality and design. The picture doesn't do it justice.

I just discovered that the bell my brother bought for me has disappeared from my bike. I'll take one. Thanks

If you haven't already seen it go to YOU TUBE and type in "Police Motorcycle." There is a tandem run that is almost beyond belief. These guys ride as if they were on one bike.

Passing Lights vs No Passing Lights
Midnight V-4 replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Put them on. As stated before they make the bike look more complete. Especially on the Venture. My better half said the venture looks like it has a moon out front without the driving lights.- 37 replies

What is the farthest distance you have ridden in one day?
Midnight V-4 replied to Yama Mama's topic in Watering Hole
I don't know the milage but I rode from just outside Baton Rouge, La. to Orlando in January 1987 on a Maxim 650. I had started out from Phoenix the previous Friday hoping to make it to Orlando in three days. Went down to Tucson to catch I-10 and head east. Before I got to Tucson I ran into snow. The snow was melting and I was soaked to the skin through Levi's, two pair of thermals, a leather bomber jacket and a full face helmet. The first motel I found in Tucson was where I spent the night. Next morning I wanted to get an early start to make up for short distance rode the first day. Got on the interstate and just outside of town the Highway Patrol was flagging everyone off the road. It seems I-10 was closed through Texas due to ice on the roadway. I finally got started about noon. That set the tone for the first few days of the trip. About one tank of gas was all I could get before being frozen stiff. I thought I was going to be in Texas forever. When I arrived in Orlando I had to pry my right hand off the throttle. The forks started leaking about halfway through Texas. The right side (facing the son and warming up just slightly) sealed again but the left side continued leaking. I changed the seals after arriving in Orlando. I made a vow that neither nor that bike would leave Florida in the winter time again. That was a long time ago and I am much better off now with the Venture and I now have a set of chaps and hopefully more brains. -
Turn signal problem
Midnight V-4 replied to Midnight V-4's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You're right. I'll apply some grease next day off. Thanks to all who offered suggestions. -
Buz, if a herniated disk in the neck is anything comparable to the pain I know how you feel. Vicadin did not even touch the pain. Only thing that helped was oxycodone and you can't keep taking that. My prayers are with you for a speedy recovery.

Turn signal problem
Midnight V-4 replied to Midnight V-4's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just came back in from the garage. The gremlin that caused the problem must have heard that I was getting help from the folks on this forum. He apparantly decided to leave. I went out and took the lense off the right front signal to test one of the suggestions and when I hit the turn signal everything worked properly. With all the fiddling I did yesterday with the bulbs, taking them out and putting them back, maybe the corrosion that was present got scraped off. Anyway, if it happens again I have plenty of places to start. I've said this before but I'll say it again. This is the best site I have found on the web. Freebird (my brother's favorite song, btw) you did one heck of a job. You should come down to Fl. next April for Leesburg Bikefest. Just featured on American Thunder as the largest two day bike event in the world. I can provide camping area, showers, and a limited amount of covered parking. Just 15 minutes from Leesburg. Almost four acres of camping space. Thanks again to all for the great suggestions -

Turn signal problem

Thanks for all the quick responses. Again the members of this Forum have shown what a class act it is. I'll try switching the bulbs.....hopefully that will be the fix. -
I have searched the other forums and threads for an answer to my problem but I haven't found one yet. My right turn signal blinks rapidly while the left blinks normally. I have tried to locate any possilbe shorts with no luck. The manual suggests the flasher relay as the culprit and I am leaning that way also. My question is: Has anyone ever heard of a flasher relay failing for one side and not the other? If so then a new relay it is for me. If not any assitance will be appreciated.

The previous owner of my '05 Midnight had a fork/tool bag mounted and it rubbed the paint on the front fender. The scuff was really noticable before the dealer buffed most of it out for me. Just my opinion but I would never mount anything that could rub the fender again. There are plenty of other places to carry tools on the bike.

That's great news. I am very happy for you and Halie. Having worked in the court system for several years I know how these things can drag on. Time now for Halie to be a kid again. God Bless You All.

There is a forum for 1100 riders under the delphi forums sight. It has great info and many knowledgible members. Here is a link to the login page. You might have to register before using the sight. http://login.prospero.com/dir-login/index.asp?webtag=yamaha1100&lgnDST=http%3A%2F%2Fforums%2Edelphiforums%2Ecom%2Fyamaha1100rs BTW several manufacturers make an oil filter relocation kit to move the filter to the front of the engine. They range around 250 dollars for a good one. I have an '01 with the kit from Phat Performance. It uses spin on filters similar to those on Harleys. The engine on the 1100 is the same as the old Virago which you may remember had no frame rails and the exhaust was run below the engine so the filter was easy to get at. Congrats on the new bike. I'm sure it will give you great service.

Having never been in the military, I cannot pretend to know how our troops feel, but I do respect and admire them for all their service and sacrifice. I make it a point to personally thank every Viet Nam Vet that I meet because I believe they were treated so badly when they came back. I don't want to sound like I'm on a soap box but all I can say is, God Bless all our troops and our Vets. Without them this Nation would be just so much empty land.

Repairing ignition switch
Midnight V-4 replied to Ozmonster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks to all the information about the possibility of the ignition switch failure I took a pre-emptive strike. I followed Freebird's write up and installed a relay to bypass the main switch. I also added a hidden toggle switch just in case the switch does fail. I connected the toggle switch to one end of a quick disconnect and the other end of the disconnect I wired to the red lead going to the relay and main switch. The Brown/Blue wire from the two wire connector goes to the line side of the relay coil so it is energized by the main switch. The load side of the toggle switch goes through the quick disconnect to the relay coil. If the main switch ever fails all I have to do is put the two halves of the quick disconnect together, flip the toggle switch, and I can start the bike and make it home for repairs. This way I don't have to keep track of where my bypass switch is......it's always there. Thanks to Freebird and Vgoose for all the great information on this and other subjects (gauges). This sight is the best thing I have found on the internet. -
CAR STOLEN-LEO's AND OTHERS, WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO??
Midnight V-4 replied to Scooter Bob's topic in Watering Hole
I can't speak for your local police but I do know in my agency we do have the capability of having a cell phone tracked. It is an expensive option however, and sometimes the money is just not there for all cases. It is done on a case by case basis and priorities have to be set (homicide case versus fraud or others). Agencies have to use funds effectively especially in light of today's economic conditions. The tracking is usually done through the cell provider and they usually charge for the service. As for the police not printing the car, were the conditions suitable? For the exterior, was it wet? If conditions were good then there is no excuse for not attempting to print the vehicle. It's always better to have prints from the interior so the bad guys can't say they were caused by incidental contact (parking lot, walking by). Exterior prints help but defense attorneys love to cloud the waters. I wish you the best. -
I bought my 05 last September. Just changed the oil for the first time about a month ago and went to Amsoil. Took a ride down to Ft. Lauderdale and back over three days. When I got back home I noticed the tranny seemed noisy. I drained the Amsoil and put in Mobil One 4t. Tranny quiet now however, I haven't run it as far as the Amsoil yet. Jury still out but I've run Mobil One in my V-Star for several months and I think it is great. Gave me about 4 extra miles per gallon even without the friction modifiers so the clutch still functions properly. My brother (96 Harley Road King) has run Amsoil exclusively and that is why I tried it. He said he is going to switch to Shell Rotella T for the savings in price. Having it available at Wal-Mart is another plus.

As a law enforcement officer I see way too much of this kind of stuff. My heart and prayers go out to you and yours. I am very proud of all of you for sticking with this and making sure this piece of scum never does this to anyone else. Too many times I've seen victims that are either afraid or don't have the patience to put up with our justice system that seems to move at a glacier's pace. Stay with it and take care of your little angel.

I feel for you. My parents and brother still live just outside Brookland. I spoke with my brother the other night. Still without power and he has no water either. Luckily has propane for heat and cooking. He works for the county on the road crew and they have been going way into the night sometimes to get the debis cleared from the roads. Can't wait for Spring and riding weather.

I am a relative newcomer to this site. I have found it to be a wealth of knowledge and a great place to meet good people who share the joy of riding and talking about our great motorcycles. It is a shame that a few "bad apples" would try to spoil it for the rest of us. Don, you keep up the good work. It is greatly appreciated by all the quality members of this forum.
