  1. I agree. I was able to purchase coolant on sale at Advance Auto for a little over 5 bucks last season. My plan of attack would be to have the shim kit on hand + gaskets and then start tearing down the bike for valve check/adjustment. After I have determined what size shims I would need (chances are it may be a smaller size to the installed shim - if not mistaken), the shim kit may have the correct size...if not...off to the dealer to order them. (this may delay me for a couple of days). Resetting the floats and cleaning the jets - need to learn more about this.
  2. Sounds like there is no way around it. With your advice, I will drain the coolant and replace after. My last coolant replacement was last year this time. This may also be the best time to replace 2 air filters. I've blown them with compressed air, but I think Yamaha recommends to replace air filters after 24K. Parts: In addition to the gasket, I guess I will need a small amount of RTV upon installation of the gasket. Do you use RTV?
  3. Thanks for your input Goose. I am slowly gaining some confidence to tear down the carb removal portion. Looking at the setup just looks a little intimidating. As for the rear valve covers, I will weigh my options whether I go for draining some coolant or simply remove the coolant reservoir and battery cover for this part.I will have to read more about resetting the floats and the best way to clean the jets. My bike currently have 24.5K miles...parts ordering should come soon. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of parts needed for the valve :fingers-crossed-emoadjustment? I'm looking at within 3 months, I seriously have to do this task.
  4. After reading VGoose's thread on valve adjustment in the tech section, I feel comfortable removing almost all the parts except the carburetors. It is good reading about valve adjustment, but physically watching someone actually do the job makes everything what I read fall into place. (Still hoping that someone in the NJ, PA or MD area is getting ready to do a valve adjustment)...any MD in the area...Texas is just way too far for me to meet the guys. I am just curious why a quart of coolant has to be drained. After reading and seriously thinking about the importance of a valve adjustment, I am determined to do it this time on a motorcycle. I've done valve adjustments and shim replacement on my 95 SHO many many times in the past.

  6. fwiw, I was advised by a co-worker speaking byexperience to be careful when washing the bike. If one gets carried out hosing down the bike, water can get in several electrical plugs and into every 'nooks and crannies'. If the water within any electrical plug has not totally dried off and you start the bike, it may cause an unexpected short and their goes your charging system going down hill. As much as possible, I try to be careful with water during a bike wash. If I can help it, no water...simply a wide down polisher will do. BrakePad, I hope you can get a clear answer from your shop dealer regarding the status of your bike. Regards
  7. You are right Trader. There is a small gray plastic cover on the top side of the tube where the shaft slips back in. It is easier to access with the left side bag removed. The first time I did it, I have an assistant to lift the 'junction' for me to slisp the shaft in the right place. I do it by feel and one can tell if it slides in the correct spot or just sitting crooked inside. Good Luck and I hope you can slide it in the first try.

  9. I had just replaced my plugs for the 3rd time at 24K miles 2 days ago and all four plugs appear to have the same expected color at the firing end of each plug. This is a good heads up and will always keep in mind about the condition of my coils down the road. FWIW, my mpg is averaging between 39 to 41 mpg.
  10. Most dealers will take you right in and you will be first in line. Make sure to tell them you are on the road...hopefully they will not make you wait too long.

  12. My co-worker went for a long ride totalling over 5K miles RT. She ended up having a new tire installed while on vacation. You could potentially face the same scenario and there is nothing wrong with that. I am sure there are vendors along the way that will take care of the issue. Ride safe.
  13. There are different kinds of 45 degree stems out there. Just make sure it doesn't hit the calipers as the tire spins.
  14. I am close to 24K and thinking about not to perform a valve adjustment, if everything else feels and sound perfect on the bike. I have been changing oil regularly and not abusing the engine. I'll have to think about this more as I get close to 26K + miles. T_T:whistling:

  16. 35 on 5th, I don't think I'll ever do that. In fact, when I picked up my bike from the dealer...the mechanic stated that you must be up to speed travelling around 60 to 65 before I shall hit OD. He said the bike will use more fuel if I shift to soon and at a slow speed. I do like to hear my engine rev at high rpms...

  18. Looks like a resolution is determined for the pads. This thread got me thinking about the oil and how it ended up on the rear pads. Please share where the oil came from...(might be another thread).

  20. True, anything can hit the radiator and cause an expensive repair. I've never really thought about something that can damage the radiator. As for the rad guard, where is the best place to purchase one? Link?
  21. I double checked my gear oil weight that is in the garage and it is 80W90 weight. The 75W145 looks to be a little heavier, but I am inclined to give it a try.
  22. Yep, I saw that 80W140 at Walmart as well as the 75W90 SuperTech. Athough Yamaha does not list 80W140, I am tempted to use it on my next gear oil change sometime this weekend. How long have you used the 80_140 on your bike so far?
  23. Yep, there is a possibility that synchro went out of spec. after the trip. It wouldn't hurt to re-synchto ensure all 4 are balanced. As mentioned before, I also have never experienced that kind of behavior from my Venture.

  25. At the very least,get an idea what your battery voltage is....
