Kenny, thanks to what you and others have posted, and a friend saying "You know, there is a plug for the mike inside the helmet." Saturday night I pulled the small plug inside the helmet apart, put it back together and wiggled it. I didn't even use any contact cleaner of dielectric grease and it worked perfectly all day yesterday. Today I'll take it back out, clean it up and add a little dielectric to it to counteract future sweating and stuff. Guess that saved the cost of new stuff!

Im back from Ga/NC foilage ride................
86er replied to DragonRider's topic in Watering Hole
Dang! I guess that means I'll have to figure out this PhotoBucket thing ...........................................tomorrow! (Lewis, did you see the pics that Jack posted in the original post?) But I too, had a great time, met some new friends and connected with some old ones. Rode some great roads and only had a few cage drivers that I wanted to strangle. I guess that's one of the problems when going to the mtns to see the leaves color change.- 2 replies

After 8,000 miles with a Pioneer GPS this summer, all I can say is "back it up with 2D navigation".....a map in a tank bag!!!

Gee, Lee! It looks like you're...............................SCREWED!!!

I'm not to sure about that, I have been known to put a rock in a box, tape the envelope to it and leave it by my mailbox. It has always disappeared after my mailman was here! I may try the tire idea and see if it disappears too! I think they pay by the weight so the more weight you get in it, the more it costs. I do like the fish idea though!!!

Has Anyone Cleaned Out Their Collectors?
86er replied to 86er's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There is one other way to display it, SilvrT, without smoke or mirrors! Now wouldn't that look great with some nice pretty paint to make it stand out?! -
Very nice bike you've got there, Kiltmeister! You shouldn't have any trouble selling it. I like the way you frenched the spedo and lights in the tank.

Has Anyone Cleaned Out Their Collectors?
86er replied to 86er's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Arthur, that's what I was thinking and hoping to hear. Does cleaning that thing out seem to make any difference in sound or performance? -
Thanks Don, that is pretty cool. Would you post the link to that so I can send it to some friends?

Cute kid! I voted too, but I want 1/3613th of the prize!!!

I had to pull my exhaust and collector to find an oil leak that I have been living with for the last 12/13 thousand miles. It started just before Vogel and my trip, and just after rebuilding the clutch and clutch slave cylinder. It turns out that it is leaking at the slave cylinder oil seal. That's on order. In the meantime, I took the collector to a friends because he has a parts washer. The oil was so cooked on that the cleaner barely touched it, so he said "Let's just put it in the bead blaster, then paint it" I said "You've got a bead blaster? COOL!!!" That was fun, but as I was moving it around I heard a rattle. I've read of this dreaded problem, but hadn't heard the rattle while it was on the bike. It was more than a loose piece that could be fixed by "punching" the bottom to press on the loose part. (Like I've read about in threads here) We decided to cut it open and get the loose piece out, it was a corner piece that had broken loose and was rolling all over the place. One thing lead to another and we ended up "cleaning it's clock"! We pulled out all the perforated metal and what appeared to be heat shield. Most of which was gone anyway. My main question is: Do I need to put some sort of heat shield back in the top of it? Does that extra heat on the bottom of the engine create any issues? Has anybody (I'm sure someone has!) done this to their's? Paul, my friend, wants to eliminate the collector all together and bend some pipe to replace it. I said that's already been done but it's a few hundred dollars! So we decided to leave that to others! Sorry, I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I'm gonna take my camera tomorrow and get some shots. I'll post them here then.

Dwight, if you are interested in riding to SC for lunch that day (just try explaining that to your co-workers!) I'll be leaving Atlanta about 6 am that day and you are welcome to ride along. I'm not sure where Pine Mountain is but we can figure it out to hook up. Just Private Message me or leave a post here.

Rubber head cover gaskets starting to leak
86er replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One cover comes off from the left and one comes off from the right. Muffinman told me you can leave the rubber air dam off too, when your done. Once you get the covers off put Yamabond #4 on the cover and set the gasket on it. Go have a beer or two and give it an hour or so to set. It takes a little finagling to get them in and out, and it helps to have an extra set of hands, but it's not too tough. I tried to cheap out and re-use the rubber grommets that the bolts go through and just laid a bead of rtv ultra black on the undersides....didn't worrk more than a few thousand miles before it stated leaking around the bolts. I just went back and replaced mine. Flatout MC shows them for $1.51 (under Cylinder Head) so order them early. The dealer is 2.49 and you need 16. -
I, too, hate to hear this. Thoughts and prayers for their entire family.

Thanks Ken. When it first went out in Wy. I thought it had to do with temperature, it didn't work as we left one morning at about 40 degrees but started working as we rode and it warmed up. But it has since gone out, and started working in all temps! I can't run a diagnostic on it just yet as the Venture is not up to a trip to my friends for cord testing. After 9,000 miles of dealing with an oil leak (Yea, it smoked through my whole trip!) I have the exhaust off and have found the leak. I'm now waiting for the oil seal where the clutch rod goes into the crankcase.

Like mini-muffin said, look into a rider safety course. Then, after your wife has been riding with you for a little while take a rider/passenger safety course. Ride On, Ride Safe, and Welcome to the family.

I don't know if Sierra uses J&M or not, but I have heard that what they install is not the best sounding. If my memory serves me right, I know one guy that had Sierra install his in Daytona and after riding with them for a while went back and had them remove it and he put in his own J&M. He has the new Nolan 3/4. I'm having trouble with mine too. The mike doesn't seem to work now (for a while it was intermittent). I didn't know if it was the headset or the radio until I borrowed Dragonrider's helmet. Plugged his in and it worked, plugged mine in and it didn't. I switched back and forth several times with the same results. Now I'm going to switch with another friend who has the 2 part cord like mine (Lewis' is one piece cord) to find out if it's a cord or the mike. I can't seem to make anything change by bending and maneuvering the wires.

They say that it won't go off if you forget and get off the bike without disconnecting the lanyard. That would be my luck; step off the bike and POOF, I'm the Michelin Man!!!

I Liiiiiiiiiike It!!! I, too, get tired of all the things that come with pre-paid envelopes. I have been known to take a 10 or 15 pound rock from my creek and leave it in a box with the envelope taped to next to my mailbox. It's always gone after the mailman has been here! I'm gonna try the tire idea, that's even better than the rock; I've got a couple of tires to get rid of!!! :rotf: Thanks for the input!
