You can use "Liquid Electricians Tape" to fix those holes. New diaphragms are really expensive.

Poor performance after tip over

Ditto on that for the left side too. If you landed on the left side you could have messed up the clutch switch. My cruise would sometimes shut down and I finally traced it to that switch. Or rather to the clutch lever and brass bushing therein having too much slack. -
Nice pictures! I, too, wish I could have made it. Oh well, there's always next year (Huh, Leslie?!). I really like the blue second gen with the flames! It's amazing how much those things look like Ultra Glides!

that low speed feeling
86er replied to Indyventure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had a 650 Maxim that would center if you pulled the bars a little to the side. It was SCARY to ride! The reason for the self-centering was that it had ball bearings in the steering head and they had created divots in the races. I was able to get the races from Mamaha fairly cheap, but they wanted like 4 bucks apiece for the bearings and there were about twenty of them. I ordered three and went to Ace Hardware with them. I matched them up with Ace bearings at 15c apiece and they worked great till I sold the bike 50K miles later!- 19 replies

The Evan Williams Bourbon is what gets me in the shower each night to scrub it down, Eck! I wasn't even on the Dragon this time, Carl; I was less than a mile from home! An older friend of mine told me "In three years you won't be doing all this scraping crap! When you get closer to 60 it doesn't matter as much!"........................I don't buy it! (I hope!!!)

Trust me on this...you want to ride the Going To The Sun road from west to east! That puts you on the "drop-off" side. And if they have it stopped for construction, ask if they have the "Motorcycles Move To The Front Of The Line" rule! Worked for me!

Here are a few pics. I've got the Road Sofa torn down. I had to take the fairing brace off, in the last wreck, at the Dragon, I bent the left mirror mount.....this time it was the right side. Last time I replaced the fairing mount. I decided to use the old brace and the replacement to come up with one. After some careful measuring and cutting, we welded it back together. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1386.jpg Welded and time for some grinding. You don't need to weld pretty, you just need to grind pretty! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1387.jpg I'm only worried with the area that needs to fit the plastic cover. It's all behind plastic. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1388.jpg A little black paint works wonders! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1389.jpg It's ugly naked, but the lines are nice! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1379.jpg I can see making a custom out of it! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1380.jpg OK, I'll move down because the next few pics are of my road rash. Not bad, but if you're queezy, you might stop here! . . . . .. . . . . . . . . This stings a little! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1381.jpg This hurts to bend! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1382.jpg There might be a scar involved here! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/100_1383.jpg Hey! I warned ya!

I found a nut on the road that looked just like that after my recent "unexpected get off". I wasn't sure if it was off my bike or not, so I brought it home. Guess I'll take a look at my handlebars in the morning! Can't believe that it could have come off, but you never know! (And I rode to bike night tonight!) -

If I gotta crash, I'd rather do it on the bike than a mower! C'mon down, Curtis, we'll go tame the Dragon! You oughta be here for the Ashville rally!! -

Yup, Sonny! One of my rules is that if I'm gonna ride hard, I gear up with at least long pants, preferably leather, and a jacket with armor. This was real spur of the moment! Already done, Earl! My Intruder was running really badly, thought I had gotten some bad gas, so I asked a friend to come over and help me figure it out. He's an excellent mech. We took the tank off and messed with choke cables, made sure everything was ok. No probs so we pullled the plugs. One looked a little rough but not real bad. We decided to put new ones in anyway. That and a half can of Seafoam did it! Rode it to work the last two days. What's he talkin' about, Dave??? The bourbon and a couple of aspirin worked great for getting in the shower with some betadine antiseptic and double ought steel wool to clean the road rash! OWWWW! (It might have been a wash cloth by I wouldn't swear to it! ) 5 bucks is for a "drop" Eck, it's $10 for a crash! And this one definitely qualifies as a CRASH! I went to the "Donations" button to do that and now one can only do the "subscriptions". Hey Don, why can't I make a straight up donation? Nope! 1st class success, Squeeze! The 86 didn't wobble once as it ran out from under me! Chu got that right, Babyyyy! It ain't pretty, Steve, but I got the Venture ready to ride to bike night tomorrow night. Safety wired plastic but sans dash cover, front chrome trim, headlight trim and with the right mirror frame pointing to the heavens! Oh yeah, I've got an orange bungy cord holding the windshield in place! Maybe I ought to put up a wish list for parts!? -
Even I have a hard time keepin' up wit dat boy! (Guess I ain't fat enough yet! )

A Harley ridin' friend of mine said "How old are you...55? I'll give you 3 years and you'll stop all this scraping cr@p!" Maybe then I'll get a 2nd gen........NOT! -
Yeah, right, How we supposed to do that?!?!?!? Glad you're legal, boy!

There were way too many titles for this thread running through my head! "Watch That Front Brake!" "Here We Go Again!" "Love the Fork Brace, But...." And the always great: "Oh S#*T!" I put my new fork brace on, and to do so, I had to take my VR.o gremlin bell off. It is mounted in a hole in the end of my front axle. I forgot to put it back on, but I am now a believer!!! I put my new brace on and went for a ride. LOVED IT! It really tightened things up! I could just think of trying to scrape from side to side and it would do it. I tried braking in a turn and very little shake. And the shake that was there was....solid is the only word for it. I took the bike up to 55, set the cruise and hands free, I hit the right handle bar. It shook twice and that was it! Same on the left. I wasn't geared up so I didn't go out on the highway for a high speed test. After lunch with my sister, I was headed home, I ran through a neighborhood by mine with nice twisties (SleeperHawk, Mechanic, Swifty and Beer30 know where I'm talkin' about!). I ran thru there at 45/50mph! I usually run thru there at 35/40 and it felt better than 25/30! I decided to try braking in a left sweeper at about 50. I grabbed some front brake and it felt really solid............until the front wheel locked for a second. That's when the bike I was riding was magically ten feet in front of me sliding on it's side. I was, like "OK, it's all goo.....S#*T don't flip!!!..................D@&M!!".Well, at least it was the right side this time. I needed to replace the right mirror anyway. At this point I want to say...I'm OK, nothin' broken, just a little road rash. Left elbow, left calf and left "cheek" (I know, I know......."At least you're ok", but I'll heal, the bike will take money and work!) A friend of mine said "I know,.........you were riding in shorts and a T-shirt." I said "Hell NO!................I was riding in shorts,......and a Flowerdy Hawaiin shirt!!!" I still have the fairing brace from the last crash and I think I can cut it in half and trash the "crashed" parts, use the good halves and weld it back together. So, I guess I'm back in the plastic fixin' business! There are a couple of fairings on eBay that I'm gonna try for, if they go cheap enough. May be time for that repaint. I just need some real winter this year to stop riding it and paint!!! OK, it's time to swab my wounds in alcohol......I think I'll try some bourbon......from the inside! Anybody got an extra right side mirror? BTW: I've already been called "Skid" (we've got one of those!) and Crash (we've got one of those too!). And "RoadScab" aint gonna get it, Fly-N-lo! -
I put my CondoBrace on yesterday, but before I did, I took it to a friend that has a mill in his basement. We milled in weep slots like on the stock brace. I don't know if it really makes a difference but I feel better knowing water won't stand in the holes when it's sitting in the rain. I also had to loosen the axle and re-torque it. Hey Skid, now we can tell the difference in our bikes! I got the silver. I was going to wait until I got my fork seals and do it all at once but I decided that if I did that, I wouldn't know which fixed what. Now I gotta go ride it and see how it feels. SeeYa!

:rotfl: You go, George! But I have to agree about the Venoms. I ride them on my 1400 Intruder and won't use anything else. I was at a track day at Barber Race Track in Abalama and was talking to the tire guy. I figure since he does racing events, he should know so I asked him about the Venoms. This was about a year or so after they came out and he said that in the north, where they race in the rain a lot more, that is the tire of choice because it handles the wet so well. I have done over 100mph in a pouring rain, slowing to 90 for the sweepers and had no problem with them. Of course my ar$$ was so tight you couldn't have driven a pin up it with a sledgehammer!!! I wish I could use them on the 1st gen, but I don't have the suspension dialed in enough yet. I'll get it there though!
-
Thanks, I hadn't seen that post. I think I'm glad I hadn't! Except for the lube tip. I hadn't tightened mine enough the last time I had it off (with the fairing off) and it came loose. I didn't want to go thru all that again. With a friend, I took the left turn signal out and looked thru there. You can just see it that way. Going up between the forks it can be gotten to. But it ain't easy! It also helps to have the bottom loose so you can turn it as you mate it up. Once the cable's up against the speedo, it can be turned thru the turn signal hole with a long screwdriver.

Hey! Who are you and what did you do with snarlybill?!?!

So how did you do that, Ken? I had the same problem recently and would like to read that thread to see if I could've done it easier! (Or maybe I don't! )
