Side play in the
oldandcrotchety replied to Cruser's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm glad you posted that photo. Since I bought my bike 5 years ago, it has never had that spacer on it. I always wondered why there was a empty looking space there, but since it was like that when I got it I just figured that it must be normal. I guess I better order a new spacer from Flat Out Motorcycles. On the parts diagram, they show it as a washer for $1.60, if I am looking at the right one. Looks like something I could pick up at a hardware store if I could determine the right size. Luckily, so far, not being there has not caused any issues. -
Clock Issue
oldandcrotchety replied to icebrrg3rd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's odd.....mine will only program with the key in the "on" position, but the motor NOT running. Once I fire up the engine, the clock won't respond to the button. -
Well!!....hmph....

I almost made it to the hub on Friday. About 30 miles north of Russellville I noticed I was getting low on gas. I had not seen a service station (or anything else for that matter) since Dover. I pulled into a roadside rest area and took a break. 3 Harley riders pulled in behind me coming from the north, so I asked one of them how far to the nearest gas station heading north. He said that they were actually coming from the south and had just missed the rest area and turned around. However, he did have a GPS and looked to see where the nearest station was. Turns out it was 36 miles north, and I had 30 miles left in my tank. I should have filled up in Russellville. So, my only options was to either back track 25 or 30 miles and fill up, and then head back north, or just turn around and blow it off. Since I hate those steep, twisty mountain roads, I just decided to blow it off and go home. It was way too hot for riding anyway. If I ever head back up that way again, I will know to get gas before starting up the mountain. But, I don't think I want to do any more trips in that kind of heat. I got pretty sunburned and dehydrated. Wasn't much fun. Glad you guys had a good time and I'm sorry I didn't get to meet some of you. Maybe some other time. Fred

Looks good, but wouldn't work for me. Too bad. The idea of not having to wear extra cover clothes would be nice in hot weather. It says it fits all J-frame revolvers but mine is the larger K-frame. Guess I'll just stick with my shoulder rig and wear my vest. Sorry I didn't contribute any useful information for you, I've never even seen one of these before. Just thought I'd comment on it since it does look like a practical rig. (If I could draw past my pot belly).

New here and a question
oldandcrotchety replied to willysman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Heh heh, yeah....very true. Always "been sitting about a year". And every time a cop asks a drunk how much he's had to drink, it's "2 beers". And another one you hear is: "It was running fine when I parked it". Un hunh.....so why did you park it. Still, even if this one has been sitting 5 or 6 years, it is a near give away price. It would be worth buying just for the parts. -
tire change
oldandcrotchety replied to Pappa Bear's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well all you have to do is use a floor jack with a board on it to raise it a few inches. That's what I always do, and it works fine. Lot easier than taking off the front wheel. -
tire change
oldandcrotchety replied to Pappa Bear's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I can't imagine that just dropping off the center stand could cause any real damage. Certainly not enough to cause an oil leak. Maybe it was there all along and you didn't notice it. After all you said about 2 drops in an hour. Did it stop after that? You sure the oil spot wasn't there before from something else? Also, I'm with Randy on this; Why lower the front? It really isn't needed. -
Well, I know what you mean, it felt just a whole lot like a back tire with very low pressure, and that was the first thing that I checked when I got into town. It showed 38 pounds in front and 41 in rear. Also, it hasn't been too long since I serviced the steering head bearings and they are fine. Might be an issue with wheel bearings or rear shock. I'll check them later.

Sometimes acting like a juvenile can get you in trouble. The other day I was riding down the highway at about 60mph when up ahead I saw a motorcycle that I was slowly gaining on. I was probably going abut 5mph faster than him, so I wasn't gaining that fast. I decided that when I got up fairly close behind him, I would just fall in line and follow to the next town. When I got close enough I could see it was a Harley and it was pretty new. So just as I got to the right spot and slowed down a little to keep pace behind him he saw me and after saying something to the girl on back (probably: "watch this") he twisted the throttle and took off. At first I thought "oh well, so what". Then a little voice (no doubt the devil) said "You know what?...You don't really want to play this game with me". So, being that it was a long straight stretch and no traffic, I dropped it down a gear and let loose. I was doing 95 as I blew past him and heard him drop a gear as I went past and throw the coals to it, but to no avail. There was zero chance he would be able to catch up, much less pass me. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself as I started back into the right hand lane, but right then, the bike started wobbling. The back wheel was kind of fishtailing back and forth and the handlebars was shaking. Scared the you-know-what out of me. Was picturing a hundred yard long red smear on the pavement. However, I ever so slowly eased off the throttle and by the time I was back down to about 85mph, it was riding normally. Good thing the air was warm and dry enough to evaporate all the sweat that was pouring off of me, otherwise, the folks behind me would have thought they had hit a sudden rain shower. Anyway, it was a stupid kid type thing to be doing and almost bit me in the butt. Feller my age should not do adolescent, immature stunts like that and you can bet I will think twice before doing it again. (OK, I've thought twice. I'm over it. Time to do it again the next time someone on a Harley tries that with me.) P.S. I used to own a Harley, and I know what they will and won't do. They are not the fastest thing on the blacktop.

In my opinion, shaving cartridges have been suffering in quality for the last few years. Plus the price has been steadily climbing. With that in mind, I went back to the old double edge razor and brush system that I started with 40+ years ago and am very happy with the results. No nicks and much, much cheaper blades, even though I use the more expensive, comparatively, Feather brand blades. Check out badgerandblade.com

I cast my vote for Chicago Cutlery also. They are much cheaper than the top end knives and do an excellent job for home use. I bought a good electric sharpener to set down next to the knife block and just run the blades through that every so often. I used to spend money on higher end stuff, but these knives are a bargain. I've had mine for years and years and they are still doing a great job, and didn't cost no $300.00 either.

Three books by Daniel Meyer. "Life is a Road, The Soul is a Motorcycle", "Life is a Road, Get On It and Ride", and "Life is a Road, Ride It Hard". I think he has another one out since the last one, but I haven't bought it yet.

Dry cell batteries? How much is to much?
oldandcrotchety replied to a1bummer's topic in Watering Hole
I don't reckon there's a chance of "too much cca". I have a full size car battery in my '83 and ain't had no problems at all. Don't remember the cold cranking amps, but it sure got rid of my hard starting problems and hasn't hurt anything so far. -
Mine was a 1965 Honda cl 150.

first gen exhaust seals
oldandcrotchety replied to Chaplain's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's what I did with mine. Just cut a length of #10 copper wire the right length to make the gasket and then flattened it somewhat with a hammer and anvil, and put in place. I did mine in 2006 and so far they are still working great. -
Starter rebuild kits
oldandcrotchety replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You're right, that is a good price. Might just snag one of them myself for whenever I may need it in the future. Thanks for posting that. Fred -
To remove the seat, take off saddle bags and you will see a bolt on each side of the seat that holds it in place. Just remove those and then lift up rear of seat, slide forward a bit and lift off.

Me too. Just now jumped on the bandwagon and send paypal to you. Was afraid I was going to miss this go around from not checking often enough.

You got that right, Squid. At least for now. Tell us how ya feel about it around the first of August. I used to live in Texas, and I can tell ya; you coming from the north and all....you gonna need a couple of years to acclimatize to that heat. But sure is nice in the winter. Fred

"You then sit with out talking or moving your mouth for about one and a half to two minutes until the product sets up." So you're saying this product is for men only?

Well that's just pretty cool. May do that my own self.

Or do like me and go to a full size car battery and 4ga cables. -
As it happens, I just bought a bright red shirt a few days ago. After I got home and looked at it more, I got to wondering if maybe it was just a little too loud. Now I have a good reason to wear it and it will become my Friday shirt. Fred

Wanted to let everyone know that when I needed to buy a mirror, this guy sent me one for free! Wouldn't even discuss letting me pay the postage. What a great guy! The mirror came in today and looks like a brand new one. THANKS BOB! (Say Don.....reckon you could hang another award on him for helping out a fellow rider?)
