  1. Did you check the tire pressure in the rear? If its low, it will feel wobbly like you describe. Sometimes its just the simple stuff. Check the front tire pressure too. As far as the brake drag on the front rotors is it alot or just a little? a little drag as in you can hear the pads touching as the wheel spins but it doesn't really slow the wheel down is normal. Be better if you can get the bike in the air level and spin the front wheel and apply the brake a few times to check. Might just need to clean and flush the brake fluid. If your fluid is low, might be time for new pads. You can use a jack stand under each one of the rear passenger floor boards, depending on the style of jack stand you have. I put the stand under the bolt that holds the rear floor board on with the floor board folded up. I adjust the stand height and lean the bike up from the side stand on to the jack stand under the right rear floor board first. Then slide the other stand in under the left rear floor board pivot bolt. If its adjusted right you will have to slightly lift to take the weight off the suspension to the get the left stand in underneath. If the stands are set the same the bike will be level. this is how I level it to change oil. You can then use your floor jack to lift the front enought to spin the tire. You can only lift it a little bit set up like this. RSTDdog
  2. If it will start and run, try some seafoam in the gas. Let it run for a while until you know its in the carbs and shut it down. Let it sit overnight and start it up again the next day. Make sure battery is fully charged and cables are tight. Even running it on the centerstand periodically will be better than letting it sit. You can start it up at night and see if there is any spark leaking causing a miss. Cleaning the bike is cheap or free, just your time. Even if some stuff is faded, cleaning what you you can clean can make a big difference in curb appeal. Hope things get turned arond for you. RSTDdog
  3. I don't bother with anything on craigslist ( or any site) anymore that doesn't have a phone number. Real, non-scam, wholesale or below market deals on craigslist are sold generally within hours if not minutes of posting. There are people that do nothing but scour for these deals 24-7. Then there are the scam people just trying to add to their email addy list for spam. The last ad i responded too with no phone number seemed innocent and legit enough. A floor liner and a cargo net for a 2007 and newer Hyundai Sante Fe listed as being in my town, Not your typical scam ad at a price too good to be true. A couple of email exchanges and the real clue is when you give them a phone number to call you to make arrangements. Then no more responses and then start getting spam messages. I mean think about. Price is low because they really need to sell (or similar typical BS), but no way for you to contact directly, pick up immediately and pay cash??? RSTDdog
  4. COnstant squeal like a belt slipping all the time or intermittent squeak , squeak , squeak that goes faster with rpm? So it got louder after the oil change? What oil were you running before this last change? Did you change the brand of filter? Is it worse when engine is cold or warm or doesn't matter? Does it do it idle in neutral only or also idle in gear with clutch pulled in or slow speed in gear- say parking lot speed? If the noise stays the same regardless of engine temp I doubt the type or weight of oil will have any affect. Try and put it in gear and see if squeak goes away when you let out clutch. Put your foot on the brake and load the engine and clutch a bit. Can you hear it more on one side of the engine than the other? Could be as simple as needing a carb sync. Sometimes if the carb sync is out they will make different noises at idle. RSTDDog
  5. I had a set of 08 Ultra mufflers. I did not see anything that looks like that inside. I will say that one muffler was very different than the other. One muffler (the right one I think )if you looked inside the inlet you could see all the way to the rear baffle plate. The rear baffle plate on that side had a little top hat that kept you from seeing out the exit hole straight through the muffler. The left muffler was different and you could not see very far past the inlet side at all. Since the left and right mufflers were so different internally (and the stock ones aren't) I was worried about exhaust flow balance left and right. Didn't feel like drilling hammering out the left one to see if i could get it to look like the right one inside so I sold them. The exhaust on a newer harley is different and they use a crossover for flow routing and balancing between the mufflers. I'm willing to bet one of your mufflers looks completely different inside than the other. Being 09 mufflers One of them likely has a Cat in it. I would want two mufflers that look the same inside. I think you need the older (before 05 maybe) RK or ultra mufflers to achieve this. RSTDdog
  6. Zero Loss referes to the way the pump attaches. Alot of air chucks will lose a small amount of air when you remove them. The difference in the pumps I'm guessing is the guage itself and the design may make it easier to access the forks. With respect to gauges, the accuracy is typically rated through about 80% of the sweep. FOr instance if you look at guages generally say on Grainger, a 0-100 psi guage might have an accuracy specification of +/- 1 psi from 10-90 PSI. As a general rule you want to use a gauge that your target measurement is Midscale. So for tires and things between 20 and 40 PSI a 0-60 guage would be ideal. Having the pump with a lower guage of 0-30 makes seeing the incremental changes say from 5-6psi easier and would generally be more accurate for lower pressures than a 0-60 guage would be in the lower range (30 divisions VS 60 divisions). If you wanted to be real anal about measuring the fork pressures a 0-15 psi or 0-10psi low pressure guage would be ideal in combination with a zero loss chuck. On edit: Looks like I type too slow and you answered your own question on the gauge part. RSTDdog
  7. This was cool thread. Went through all 17 pages. Somehow didn't see it before. This is a picture of my wife and I in Freedom NH last July on our New England Motorcycle trip. This was early in the day so Helmet hair not too bad... You can barely see the RSTD behind us. Figured they may not like it if we pulled it up on the grass... Derrek
  8. FJR is pretty close now. Hopefully they will do something cool with the new Vmax engine in the way of a touring bike, more sport and less cruiser than the current RSV. Im guessing Its only a matter of time....
  9. Looks like you have to pull the carbs to install those. They go in the intake manifold. Thats at least somewhat more credible than the airbox, since the two right turns after the airbox would have eliminated any swirling effect. But if it was worth swirling the air, the Manufacturer would be doing it. If your willing to pull your carbs, I suggest pulling them and checking the float height per Gooses tech article and putting them back on. You'll probably find that will make a bigger difference. Same work (almost) less money. RSTDdog
  10. AHHH LUCAS- The Prince of Darkness..... No British Bikes for me, but my brother had an MGB GT, wierd unexplainable electrical gremlins. I grew up in the " As long as your living under my roof you can't ride a motorcycle" household. First bike- I was 19 or 20, a 1974 Honda CL450K6 Scrambler, My friend brought it down from New Jersey in 1985 or 1986. It had been sitting. Put gas it in it , it fired up, I rode it around seemed to run OK, thought it was kind of slow had to give it alot of throttle, carbs leaked some. Bought a service manual, cleaned and balanced the carbs, adjusted the valves, replaced and timed the points and condenser, and about threw myself off it the first time riding it after working on it. No longer needed to turn the throttle near as much...... Got a Kawasaki 400 LTD during/after that one, then a 78 Yamaha XS 750 Special (Triple), 92 ST1100ABS TCS in 1994 Sold it in 1998 for $1000 more than I paid for it, Almost ten years to the day of selling the ST I got my RSTD. Hmmm. Mammaries.... Light the corners of my mind...... Derrek
  11. Look for the 30th Anniversary Edition in 2013. I can see it now The Yamaha Venture- 30 years of V4's, Carburetors, and Cassette Decks ( of course there was a short Hiatus) .........
  12. Don't know about the Milwaukee boots,I have a pair of the Bates GX8 Tactical boots I use for riding. Well made, comfortable, waterproof, can walk in them 129.00 at Bass Pro Shops, 99.00 at Academy last time i checked If you have one of those near by. I tried on several pair and brands of boots I really like the Bates. RSTDdog
  13. I was noticing that the 130/90 16 Commander Front is labeled as Reinforced and has a 73H load index rating which is higher than the OEM rating of 71H for the stock tire size 150/80-16. The higher load rating would indicate a heavier carcass design, might result in better high speed stability. But then the MT90-16 (130 eqivalent in the E3) is rated at 72H. Every tire is different. Stability at high speed probably will have more to do with the mounted shape of the tire and contact patch. All the press releases I have seen indicate two more sizes to be released in ealry 2012. From looking at the current charts, I am surmising those will we Wing sizes since they don't currently offer a front or rear OEM size for the Wing. RSTDdog
  14. Where are you buying the CommanderII and for how much? I'm running a stratoliner front wheel in a 130 70 18 and I don't see them making the Commander II in that size either ( atleast not yet) and that size also fits Goldwings. Their current availability in front tire sizes Sure leaves them out of some markets. I do like the handling though with that front tire size and I don't seem to have any high speed issues. My original Commander rear tire has a round 11k with around 2/32 or less left in the center. I'd really like to get a matched pair and right now it seems Avon and Dunlop are my only options. Don't need to buy right now but I will soon. RSTDdog
  15. What brand of battery did you install a year ago? cables clean and tight at both ends? Im going on 6 years with the OE Yuasa battery. They are sealed maintenance free types. The trick to these is after you add the acid pack let it stand for an hour and install the caps and then fully charge it before installing it. Most people don't do this and most dealers don't do this either. I always service them myself. When this one goes I'll get another Yuasa. I have personally had issues getting an AGM to take a charge if the battery discharges to 10 volts or less.
  16. Makes you think twice about the comment "never ridden off road"
  17. Congrats on the new ride. Depending on the In service date you may still have some warranty left. Have the VIN checked at a Yamaha dealer and see if it falls in the head gasket recall. Some of the 07 models weren't torqued all the way. Caught early it just needs a retorque. If it starts leaking, it needs replacement. Either way its on Yamaha in warranty or not, but get it checked out. Great bike the RSTD. Looked at several different bikes myself before deciding on the RSTD. Good combination of style and features. Enjoy it. RSTDdog
  18. Check the VIN and see if it falls in range of the head gasket recall. I think it affects 07 models. If caught early enough it just needs a head retorque. If it starts leaking will need the head gasket replaced, but I think its on Yamaha's dime either way. RSTDdog
  19. Brake Pad If your here on Friday, let me know. Fort Myers Bike Night this Saturday January 14, 2012 and Poker Run at Navigator Grill in Port Charlotte this Sunday, January 15, 2012. RSTDdog
  20. D407 and D408 are Dunlop OE tires for Harley Davidson. D407 came stock on the Fl models and others. Not sure what if any similarities in design to the E3 or older E2. Hopefully more sizes are coming. I see from that list they don't have any 18" fronts either, in particular 130 70 -18 which fits Goldwing and Stratoliner and others, a market I'm sure they would want to sell to. I'm not far from replacing my rear Commander (old style). Would like to be able to try a set front and rear. RSTDdog
  21. Bump. Revived this thread starting at post 10 for Florida riders fro upcoming events. Fort Myers Bike night Jan 14, 2012, Brake Pads Poker Run Benefit January 15, 2012. Links and info above. Maybe better if I start a new one? RSTDdog
  22. Kind of like the woman from that program Murder She Wrote- every time she comes to visit a town, somebody dies............... So if Athelete's get Athelete's Foot, what do Astronauts get??? Missile Toe......... I guess that's not a clean joke snce its about dirty feet?? RSTDdog
  23. My wife and I would be up for this as well. I'll keep checking in on this one. On Key Largo ( or Tavenier) is Ragged Edge Motel. On Atlantic side. $100.00 last time I stayed there, but there were two rooms and a kitchen, so for people /couples willing to room together the price would be half. Older traditional motel with indiviual two story house style buildings. As long as the owner is a alive it will remain this way. Nice location on the Atlantic side, has a pool. Places to stay in Islamorada, Key Lantern Inn and Blue Fin Inn (same owners), old but clean, some of the lowest rates in the keys. You can walk to Lorelei Restaurant and Bar (and walk back) for good food and great sunsets. For those Flying solo, Woodys Adult Entertainment is also walking distance (about a 1/2 mile). Camping- Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge has camping and rooms. In April availability may be opening up there. No Name Pub and Key Deer (about the size of a dog) are attractions on Big Pine Key. The last time we camped there, the Key deer just walk through the campground. Also Knights Key Campground is still open last time I was through there. Had the bottom not fallen out of the real estate market, Knights Key campground would be condos now. Nice locationon Atlantic side There is a KOA on Fiesta Key ( might be Encore now, not sure), that being said I think rooms at Key Lantern are cheaper than a campsite at the KOA. Bahia Honda State Park has Campgrounds and so does Long Key State Park. Getting in these is kind of hit or miss in winter season. Early April may have some availabililty. If anyone is interested in Offshore Fishing, I know a boat and captain I have been on four times now dolphin fishing. Limited the boat each time. Captain Lee Robinson- Jackpot. This guy loves to fish. He used to go out of his house in Tavenier, now I heard he is at Ocean Reef Resort in Key Largo. Anyone making this trip coming down the west coast of Florida is welcome to stay here. Derrek RSTDdog
