  1. Same thing happened to Dave (ZipCode), see watering hole thread. Metal or something after going through construction zone. Dave went down, a little banged up, sore but OK. If you kept the shiny side up you did good. RSTDdog
  2. Have you been up against any stock Ventures with this set up? What was the outcome? Just curious? RSTDdog
  3. Bike needs to be straight up to check oil level in sight glass. Do not over fill as this can cause oil to go into the airbox through the breather. When I don't have help, I keep the bike level with a jack stand under the steel bracket for the passenger floor board. A little trial and error to get the right height setting for the jack stand, use a rag or towel on the stand to keep from scratching. tilt the bike up and onto the jackstand on the right passenger floor board and then slide one in under the left side. I usually set it where I have to pick up the bike just a little (just suspension movement, not the whole bike) to get it under the left side. i need to change oil today, I will try and post some pictures. 4. Increasing intake air and exhaust flow as a general rule, the increase in horsepower, if any, will occur at the upper end of the RPM range, usually at the expense of low speed response. I think if you know what you are doing and have access to a dyno and lots of time to remove and reinstall carburetors, intake air and exhaust mods on this bike Might get you 5 horsepower at peak rpm only and not through the entire powerband. The affect on your performance will be neglible IMO. If you look at the performance chart posted in the 1/4 mile times thread in the RSTD forum, you will see that you need a large increase in horsepower to acheive a relative small gain. If you look at the 97 RSTD Vs the 2005 RSTD, these bikes have a difference of around 12hp at the rear wheel (dyno data), nearly the same torque, and very little difference in performance. Here is alink to the MCN performance data fromthat thread. http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/technical/2012JanPerfIndx.pdf There is probably more opportunity to make the bike faster by making it lighter. As the chart bears out,its all about HP per Lb. Carbon fiber fenders anyone??? RSTDdog
  5. Good to hear (read?) that you are doing well. Please be sure to let us know when you determine the cause of the rear tire flat, Inquiring minds want to know. RSTDdog
  6. You can just turn the wheel around no problem. RSTDdog
  7. Here is an older thread on the subject. Hopefully Rick Bulter and others wil be along with more input. I eventually want to do this as well. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48130&highlight=Racetech
  8. Thanks for the write up and great pictures! How many miles on your RSTD when you changed the shock? If I understand you right, you are running the YSS with the leveling links??
  9. Well I planned on putting some miles on it, but there is rub associated with that as well. Some more reading indicates there is a possiblility of issues with the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) unique to the 09 and up common rail TDI. Some reported failures are under warranty with less than 5K miles on the car, others are just out of warranty. The HPFP failure, if it happens, sends metal through the entire fuel system. Approx 7K to replace the pump , all fuel lines, injectors etc if its out of warranty. The failures appear ot be associated with fuel quality but there has been nothing I have seen that the cause of the issue has been identified and resolved. It seems the lubricity standard for diesel fuel in the US is not as rigid (Less lubricity) than in the EU. These also have DPF (Diesel particulate filter), estimated life is around 100 to 120K miles. Assuming no HPFP failure, it seems the Timing belt service and DPF replacement may wipe out any fuel cost savings in 100K miles. That being said, with 236 lb ft of torque, and a 6 speed manual, its a hoot to drive. It seems well put together and very solid on the road. I loved the two TDI rental cars I had when I was in Germany in 2001 and 2003. Anyway I have backburnered the idea for now, will keep driving the Miata. Thanks, RSTDdog
  10. I liked it. But OTD price was 26k for the 4 door. Intellichoice rates the 5 year cost as as excellent. Any opinions out there. I know there are TDI forums and I ve looked at those but that's. Like coming here asking about Ventures. Anyone been down this road and bought something else? Thanks RSTDdog
  11. I have one that works with the stock RSTD seat and I liked it real well. The main bracket and parts are stainless steel and its well made. As mentioned the spring loaded feature is nice. You can adjust the height up and down and also the forward and backward. I have installed a Venture Pillow top seat now and the RSTD model Bak up is different. The only difference is the offset bends in the main bracket to clear the passenger pillion. I emailed Bakup to see if they would sell me just the lower bracket for a Venture so I can swap it out and they don't sell parts citing legal reasons. RSTDdog
  12. Dave, I think the Solenoid is behind the right side battery cover. Don't think you need to pull the battery to get to it. DOn't forget to check your ground wire at the battery and at the engine block. Also the postive wire connection to the starter. They had to remove the ground to the block and positive to starter to remove your engine for repairs. If it is loose there ( or loose connection anywhere) you will get voltage drop and buzz at the solenoid. Probably should go throug the SM section on engine removal, and investigate tighten any steps associated with disconnecting electrical components. RSTDdog
  13. Ask them nicely to call the Yamaha Rep since you are so close to the warranty and you have heard that Yamaha is pretty good about covering things this close to the expiration date ( They actually are, or at least they were when I worked for a Yamaha dealer). A good dealer could get this covered under warranty with no problem. If they don't do this or don't want to, then call Yamaha yourself and explain nicely about your situation and that you tried and don't seem to be getting any assistance from your dealer. Now if your shock doesn't leak or have any evidence of a manufacturing defect, then your warranty doesn't apply. I may have missed it if you posted this info previously. RSTDdog
  14. Craig, Ok I misread your post. I thought you were comparing it to a 2009 leftover Venture for 10,999. I agree the new RSTD will crash in value when you drive it off the lot. Venture Vs RSTD is a personal decision based on where and how you ride and what you want. Alot of that has been discussed already. Everyone has other potential buyers when they are selling something. I have sold a few personal vehicles in my day and I can't imagine his phone is ringing off the hook at 10,200. I would not let that affect your decision, its not the only Venture out there for sale. Just like he has other buyers, you have other bikes you are looking at, different end of the same game. If he has someone else willing to pay 10,200 if you don't want to, let him sell it. I would also still ride it first. If you want to get an idea of whats out there and what people are asking type the following into the google search bar Royal Star Venture site:craigslist.org Google will return craigslist listings in all cities nationwide with Royal Star Venture in the ad. Keeping in mind the way google works (except when you pay to be on the first page), links with the most activity display first, so newer or recently placed ads can be in a couple pages. You can also search Yamaha Venture and variants. Not all people adverise them as royal star. If you do just Venture, you'll get alot of Chevy Ads. All the google search booleans work if you want to refine the search. You can actually search for anything on any site using the site:XYZ.com after the search terms. As an example Here's an 08 with 2900 miles for 10,000 in Long Island. http://longisland.craigslist.org/mcy/2911205335.html If you are willing to drive or Fly and ride back, there are some deals to be had. 15. How about Gold Star.... The gold wing trunk has turn signals and brake light in it right? A picture from the rear would be nice to see. Once you paint it, look into to having a pillow top look backrest and pad done at an upholstery shop to match the OE seat. Paint and a matching backrest will help with blending the look. RSTDdog
  16. Yamaha's warranty runs for five years from the "In service date". The in service date is the date the motorcycle is first registered with Yamaha as Having an owner. So in your case there are two possibilities: Your bike was placed in service as a dealer demo, which should have been disclosed to you,or the bike was purchased, registered in February 2007 and returned to the dealer, then subsequently sold to you. Something else that is done is if there is dealer incentive money available on motorcycles that will expire, some dealers will sell the bikes on paper to employees, and register them sold with Yamaha to collect the incentive money. When they do this, the warranty clock starts ticking, even though the bike is never ridden or titled/registered with the State. People buying "leftover" new motorcycles should confirm that they are the first "warranty registered owner"and that they have the full warranty in effect. RSTDdog
  17. I assume you mean his other bike is a 1999 Venture, since there was no Venture in 1996? Other than that 93 was the last year if he has the old style (first Generation) venture. If he likes his 99 better, there must be a reason , since its the same bike as the 2006. I would personally take the bike for a good long ride before finalizing the transaction. 6 year old bike with 6000 miles likely has some dirty carburetor issues. If you need to pay to thave the carbs clean expect 600-800 at a dealer. In my opinion, 10,200 is not that great a deal for an 06. Particularly if your dealer has a new leftover 09 with a 5 year warranty for 10,999. Personally I'd pay the extra 800.00. RSTDdog
  18. Pinwall Cycles on ebay has quite a few of them. Not alot of money as I recall, maybe $50.00. If your caliper is frozen, Your rear brake master cylinder is probably gunked up too. When is the last time you changed/checked the brake fluid?? Might be jelly in there. With the caliper off, if you apply the rear brake can you get them to move?? RSTDdog
  19. The box or boxes will be pretty big and the DIM (Dimensional weight) will be greater than the actual, but shipping companies charge based on DIM weight. Price the shipping rate and you'll find he's not making much for his time. Thats a really good deal you got. Don't see that much on etail anymore. RSTDdog
  20. If I am selling on craigslist I don't use the email and hide it. I put my cell phone number in (spell some of the numbers out to stop text spam) and never have an issue. In my opinion, if your a serious buyer, you will call because you have questions. Anyone not willing to pick up a phone and call, I don't need to do business with. These guys have a program that grabs all the reply to sale@craigslistXYZ addys . Waisting your time with email IMO. RSTDdog
  21. Well if you think about it its pure numbers. If you have a nice high volume intersection or interstate exit, Say 10,000 cars a day, and only 1%, 1 in a 100 give you an average of a $1.00,that's still $100.00 for 8-10 hours "work" its more than minimum wage and tax free. As for the people that do it and don't need it, here's hoping there's karma............ RSTDdog
  22. It wasn't marked sold when I posted that and there was still a link the Classifieds forums, bu tyour right its marked sold now and the classified forum link is gone too. Not sure if you can get PM as a trial member but I'll try sending you one. RSTDdog
  23. I would spring for the OE ones myself. Yours are cracking at the 8 year mark. $6.00 every 8 years is not too bad.
  24. Yes. And for the Clutch and brake master cylinders that is probably the cheapest option. Your other option is Chrome plated ones from other models, but that is a pricey alternative unless you run across them as salvage parts, and that will be rare since one or the other usually gets damaged in a wreck. RSTDdog
  25. Whats wrong with the one's in the link above? Looks like they are still for sale here. 125 plus 15.00 shipping is 140.00 For both pieces (not each) is a good price. Thats less than you'll pay on ebay. They want more than that for just the seat rail on ebay. No bidding no worries. Just wondering... RSTDdog
