Another seat question
RSTDdog replied to oldbutnewrider's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Try having the stock seat modified by Rick Butler First. Relatively Inexpensive. I have the stock Venture pillow top and my wife prefers it to the stock RSTD pillion seat. My pillow tops are currently stock and un modified. I posted a link on what you need to do to mount the Venture Pillion to the RSTD in SteveO's seat post. It has pics also that show how much larger the venture pillion is compared with the RSTD. RSTDdog- 7 replies

Best seat for a RSTD
RSTDdog replied to Steve-O's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have the Venture Pillow tops. Mine are stock, but I may Rick Butler do his majic on them. So far they have been good. Here is whats involved in making the venture rear pillion work. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60469 The front seat needs L brackets either fabricated or purchase. That being said I have done some 300 mile days but not any 500 mile days. Keep in mind, no matter what seat you have, your butt will have to get used to doing extended trips. My first long distance trip was with the Stock RSTD seat. My butt was sore in the beginning, but was less sore several days in after getting used to it. If you are going to ride long distances alot, the Ultimate or Daylong may be worth the investment to you. The Butler mod is very popular as mentioned but I don't have personal experience with it. Cure for the RSTD Whine?
RSTDdog replied to Steve-O's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Have your dealer check the warranty repair history on the bike and see if the basket has ever been changed under warranty. If it hasn't been changed before, Yamaha may pay to do it as a goodwill repair, particlularly with such low miles. This depends alot on your dealer and if they are willing to go to bat for you. If you have a constant whine that is not rpm dependent (i.e. you can't rev into or out of the whine range), you may have a problem with the rear end. I have an 06 and its had the basket changed, mine whines/chirps in lower RPMS but not in the range where you normally operate and make good power. The bike does so many other things well that I can live with it. RSTDdog -
I would like to highly recommend the ebay seller smokeypointcb (Smokey Point Cycle Barn) Smokey Point Cycle Barn 15202 Smokey Point Blvd Marysville WA 98271 Phone: (360) 530-7800 Fax: (360) 530-7810 I explained to them the situation about the lens flaw (I purchased the Tribar headlight from them) and they offered my choice of a 50% refund if I wanted to keep it with the flaw, or full refund including return shipping (it was shipped free to start with). They had two, but both were sold and the part is NLA from Yamaha so exchange was not an option. First rate seller in my book, and if you live close enough to patronize them in person, I would do it. Their ebay messages are personally written and signed with a first and last name, not a canned autoreply. If they have this much concern about their online reputation, I would say they must be equally as good or better dealing with people in person. Just wanted to give them the two thumbs up!! RSTDddog

The tri-bar headlight is from a different seller than the Tri-bar passing lights. The headlight is a unit and the glass lens is not replaceable by itself. The seller of the headlight has a 30 day money back, so thats not really an issue. Visually the headlight lens is not as clear as the passing light lenses. Just trying to find out if its normal or not. I'll try and post a picture later although glass is not the easiest to photograph. Its strictly cosmetic, I don't think it will affect the light output. I have not seen a part number listed for individual chrome housings or complete lamp assembly. I picked up a set of Tribar Lamps New in Box from Ebay and the switch comes installed in the housing from Yamaha. There were instructions in the box and no part numbers listed for components. Derrek

I just received my Tri-bar headlight. Bought it on ebay from a Yamaha dealer. Its a factory Yamaha part, New in Box, date code on the label is 2004. The glass lens isn't perfectly clear. Taken by itself its not too bad, but its real noticeable compared to the Tribar passing lamps, which have perfectly clear lenses. The lens has just enough distortion to make the chrome tribar cover inside the housing look fuzzy, like the prescription in your glasses is off. Lens isn't dirty or foggy, just looks like the way the glass was made. Anybody else have this or notice this? Debating on whether or not to send back to seller. They aren't that easy to find though. Wondering if they all came through this way? Thanks, RSTDdog
-
Thanks. That's the complete set up. I just need the mount now. I picked up the Tribar halogen light set already. One ebay seller has the 1D6 mount for the 05 and up RSTD for 121 + SH, although the mount pictured in the listing is wrong. I see lots of the 4NK mounts for the earlier royal stars and they are a bargain but not sure if they would fit. There must be something different about them or Yamaha would not have issued a different part number for the 05 and UP RSTD. RSTDdog

Thanks. Do you remember if you just reuse the factory turn signal harness inside the new mount along with the power wire for the lights? I thought I saw somewhere there was a harness extension for the turn signals, but maybe that's for the Venture. I just received my Tribar lights I got from ebay and they came like you described. There is a power wire and fuse holder in the box with the lights and housings and switch installed in the right lamp. I'm going to eliminate the switch from the beginning and put a little chrome plug in its place and wire the lights with a relay as Dave suggested. Now just need to find a good deal on the mount. Anybody Upgraded Their Front Brakes?
RSTDdog replied to bongobobny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The Road star M/C looks the same as an RSV master cylinder (Tall aluminum reservoir) but has a 14mm bore. Another plus would be if you find a Road Star S master cylinder since those are CHROME! Of course then you need a Chrome clutch master too match. Yes it will work with the Vmax splitter since the banjo bolt connections for the brake lines are all the same. While that will work, from an appearance stand point it may not look that good since its a Sportbike master cylinder. Installed angle to the handlebar may be off as well. The Roadstar master cylinder has a 14mm bore and looks like it belongs there. Something to think about. On edit:For anyone interested, here is another thread discussing the master cylinder differences. I got some of the math wrong and Dingy corrected it and added a nice picture that helps make sense of it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51555&highlight=brake+upgrade&page=2 RSTDdog -
Falling apart Piece by Piece
RSTDdog replied to bostonlawman2003's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
And on your bike the trunk would have to fall off too...... You need a Second gen RSTD. No trunk in the way and a two piece pillion. See there are more reasons to get a second gen...... To the OP with respect to loose parts. How many miles do you have? Also be sure and check the carb sync. If you haven't done that in a while, out of sync carbs can add vibrations that could accelerate the process. Make sure its running on all four cylinders. They will run quite well on three but with some added vibes. RSTDdog -

Exhaust removal for inspection
RSTDdog replied to Mr.G's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Did you have popping with the stock exhaust? The site has the complete Service manual in a pdf, I'll see if I can find the link. The most common place for exhaust leak is the factory crimp on the y collector, there is one on each side. Mine leaks exhaust there, not a lot but you can feel it blow out on your hand. Some leak when they are brand new. That being said, I don't have popping in my stock exhaust, even with those leaks. I used to have a single pop on decel, I cured that going through the carbs and setting the floats per goose's write up. Make sure your carbs are clean, floats properly set, carbs synced, etc. Removing the caps from the mixture screws and richening up the mixture should help some also. Yes there are gaskets at each of the connections to the head. and packing where the mufflers slip on. You can look at the parts breakdown on Yamaha's website or a variety of yamaha online parts dealer. Hopefully some others will be along. RSTDdog -
Does your wife ride with you? I don't own one, but I test rode one and liked it. My boss has one, along with several other bikes. His wife doesn't care for the FJR from the passenger perspective. For the passenger it likely won't be as comfortable as your ultra or your First Gen. Have you ridden one yet?? Given what your used to, you'll have more weight on wrists, of course they make risers to help with that. lurking around the FJR forums would also be a good idea. RSTDdog

I've been thinking about trying this. You see take offs from trikes quite a bit. I found some pictures, on Pinwall site I think that had a tape measure in the photo. Looks like the Gold wing shock may be about an inch or so longer , hole to hole. The lower clevis is also a lot longer on the Goldwing shock, so you could drill a new hole and get the hole to hole length closer. Have some other things pending, so I haven't spent any more time on it. You can get the take offs for around 100.00. Would be nice if it works with the hydraulic preload adjuster. Not sure what you need for that to work other than 12 volts. RSTDddog

newbie/brake parts question
RSTDdog replied to pmelah's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
A little more clarification on Yamaha Part numbers. The first three digits, in this case you have 4NK and 4XY are model codes. This indicates the first Yamaha model that part was used on. These three digits are also in the Primary ID and VIN of the first applicable model. The second five digits is the part type. YOU are missing a digit in your post, but as a general rule all front brake master cylinders will have the same 5 digit part code. The last two sets typically end in 00-00 or 10-00. The first set of two are typicaly supercedes, say from 00 on the original part to 10. If there is a finish difference , that is usually in the last two digits, and are typically letters. If you look up part numbers for the Royal Star clutch ( I used a 2006 RSTD), the majority of them start with 26H. For instance the clutch basket (Primary Driven Gear Comp) is 26H-16150-10-00. 26H is the model code for the 1983 Venture. If you have a 1983 Venture you also will see that 26H is digits 4 5 and 6 of your VIN. Typically superceded parts are, improved and superceded parts with the same 3 digit model code are interchangeable. Another example. Fuel filters. 6K8-24560-10-00 and 1FK-24560-10-00. 24560 tells you its a fuel filter since all fuel filters are 24560. 6K8 is a fuel filter from a Yamaha Waverunner, 1FK is a Royal Star fuel filter, and no they don't interchange. 2009 Venture Frt Master Cylinder 4XY-W2587-10-00 2007 Royal Star (XVZ13AJ) Frt Master Cylinder 4NK-W2587-02-00 ( and from Yamahas website this number superceded from 00-00) If a part number has a different model code, that means the part is unique to that model. If I had to guess, the difference in the venture master cylinder and the one for your RoyaL star, is the mounting angle to the handle bar. Different handlebars and handlebar pull back, angle etc would make this part of the casting unique, and thus model specific. If it takes the same rebuild kit , than the bore diameter and stroke is the same. IT will probaly physcally fit (assuming the handle bar diameter is the same), but the installed angle may be wrong and may affect braking, fluid angle in the reservoir, etc. Unless you Brake master cylinder has physically broken castings or severe pitting on the bore, it should be servicable. I have seen very few that couldn't be cleaned up, honed and reused. RSTDdog -
Just go slow and take your time. Its easy to hurt yourself trying to do to much. Don't look at other people and say to yourself, I should be able to do that. Quickest way to get hurt. And one more word for you. Stretch- ALot= before, during and after. I just rejoined a gym myself after a 2 year hiatus (long story). First day back was Thursday. I have my book from when I was going regularly. Starting out about half of where I was two years ago when I stopped. If they offer personal training, paying for a few sessions is a good way to learn the equipment and also good form. Using a machine or free weights incorrectly can be worse than not doing anything. I like swimming myself. Low impact, burns calories, and puts you in great shape. Having someone to workout with and help keep you motvated is a plus. Easy to come up with reasons not to go to the Gym..... RSTDdog

The part number you listed above is the replacement glass housing (as yamaha calls it) for the Tri-Bar passing lamp. No chrome housing comes with that. The Tribar takes an H3 bulb. The Tri Bar has a different reflector design plus the tribar insert to match the tribar headlight. Yamaha also makes a standard Halogen glass insert, STR-4NK35-17-01, its a little cheaper than the Tri Bar if all your after is the E3 bulb compatibility. By TD housing, I assume your friend is talking about the glass housing. He had to change to Halogen glass housings from sealed beams to do the HID in the passing lamps. For whatever reason on their website they are only listed with the Royal Star and Vstar. Info on the HID he is using would be nice and where did he put the ballasts? The Venture and the Tour Deluxe passing lamps use the same part number Sealed Beam replacement passing lamp so the Chrome housings are the same size. Either of the Halogen glass housings Yamaha makes should physically fit in the Chrome lamp housing in place of the sealed beam. Not sure if the connector for the sealed beam would be the same as the H3 bulb though. So if you have passing lamps with Sealed beams now, either STR-4NK35-17-01 or STR-4WM35-50-EA (tri bar) should fit in your Chrome housing in place of the sealed beam. RSTDdog

Cheaper than 87, that is unusual. They may have it priced wrong. I'd go fill up a bulk tank. I stopped at a Pure station in Navarre Florida (panhandle), and they had the 90 octane ethanol free and had it priced higher than Premium unleaded, roughly .40 cents more per gallon than 87 RUGe. At that price ( at that station anyway) it wipes out any potential savings from fuel mileage increase. It was still cheaper at that price than buying it from the marina. I'll have to check the Marathon Stations around here. RSTDdog

Dave, Went back and rechecked part numbers through google- STR-4NK35-40-01 is a passing lamp mount, it looks different though, die cast is how I've seen it described. STR-4NK35-10-00 are sealed beams, and STR-4NK35- 10-01 are the regular Halogens. 10-EA are the Tri Bar lamps as I indicated before, but I can't tell what you get. I am waiting on a response backon set of the 10-EA s to see if they have the housing. THey already told me there was no harness. My local dealer has a 1D6 mount bracket he is willing to sell for around 80.00 which is cheaper than the online prices I have seen. I Saw your older posts on the relay install and definitley going to that. Found a slighly bent passing light set and mount with sealed beams located in Texas for 90.00, but can't tell from the pictures if they are worth trying to straighten. Mount tab for one light is bent. Bucket might be a little bent as well. Fr another 100.00 or so Ican get it all new, so probaly not worth the effort. Steve_O, That should be what you need, I'm looking at the tri bar light and have some conflicting info as to how to accomplish that. Thanks for the input everyone. Derrek RSTDdog

So are you saying I need to buy the sealed beam passing lamp in order to get the housing and still have to buy the tri-bar lamp (only) on top of that if I want the tri bar?
-
So I would like to get some passing lamps and I like the tri-bar halogen ones. I inquired about one set with part number STR-4WM35-10-EA and was told they were the lamps only with out the Buckets? Another set with this part number I inquired about says there is no harness, just a wire coming out of the back. That Part number on Yamahas website says Tri Bar Passing Lamps, need to use with mount sold separately. So For a Tri bar set up what part number (s) do I need? does the connecting harness for the passing lamps come with lamp or the mount kit? Do I just need the 1D6 mount and the lamp set part number above? Was trying to do it cheap through different sources, but maybe going through one of the online dealers is the way to go even if its more money. Thanks. RSTDdog
