    Topless!

My other bike is a Mazda Miata. Just like the RSTD, only the Miata has less storage space.....
  2. If you have to add choke to make it run better, You either have partially plugged jets, an air leak, or possibly both. Also check that your electric fuel pump is working. RSTDdog
  3. The part number for 05-09 Royal Star Tour Deluxe Passing Lamp Mount is STR-1D635-40-00. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/433/1812/11878/all/1/2557/0/detail.aspx According to the part numbers in your post, unless its a typo, You ordered a set of sealed beam passing lamps and a set of Halogen Passing lamps. You did not order a mount based on the numbers at the link above. STR-4NK35-40-01 is the part number for the early Royal Star Mount 96-01. I do not know what is different about it, but Yamaha would not have changed the Part Number if it would work on the newer Royal Stars (05 -09). 1D6 is the model code for the 05-09 RSTD. 4NK is the model code for the early Royal Star (1996-2001). Part numbers for the SAME part with unique model codes typically do not interchange.Would be nice if it worked since the 4NK mount is cheaper than the 1D6 mount. The actual Star paper Accessory catalog at the dealer is more clear and easier to figure out what goes with what than the online accessory info at Yamaha's website. The link above shows what you need. RSTDdog
  4. Are you sure all your sinks and drains are vented through the roof? My kitchen sink has a window over it, and since vents can't have 90's in them ( atleast not in FL) it has a stoddard vent inside the cabinet, essentially a one way check valve. If the check valve goes bad that could cause it. Just one thought. If the smell came back after running the dishwasher, which pumps a lot of water into the drain, I would suspect a leak in the waste pipe. That doesn't explain the smell in the other bathrooms since they should not be connected to the kitchen or share a vent with it (at least not through the wall). Do you have access to a moisture meter to check if the base of the cabinets or the wall are wet? Do a visual check for peeling paint or swollen cabinet base? RSTDdog
  5. I measured and the stock yamaha bucket is 4 3/4" across. The HD 69732-05 Frenched visor trim rings are also 4 3/4" across on the outside. The HD rings use a clamp style attachment (sideways screw across the bottom) That tightens the trim ring around the bucket. So these are a viable option with the Yamaha bucket. These are also available after market from what I have seen. My HD dealer gets 59.95 for them in the HD package. RSTDdog
  6. That information and more is located here. Lots of good info in that link. http://www.avonmoto.com/download/Tires101.pdf If your tires are cracked deep and less than five years old Avon may help you out with another set. RSTDdog
  7. What manufacturer provides anything but the max pressure on the side wall? I can't think of any. All tires I have seen say Max load of X at X psi Cold. That is the psi required to acheive the rated load of the tire. RSTDdog
  8. My local HD dealer has the visor bezel listed above in stock. The part number I posted is just for the bezel. I looked at them yesterday but didn't have a tape measure. The parts guy said they fit 4" lamps??. I'll try and measure them today. When I measure my Yamaha lights, the bucket and trim ring itself look to be close to 4 3/4" across on the outside. RSTDdog
  9. Can't find that listing anymore, but I found the Harley Part number using google. 69732-05 You installed these on the Yamaha housing?? Yours has the clamp screw on the bottom that goes sideways? Thanks, RSTDdog http://www.surdyke.com/hdimg/69732-05.jpg 69732-05 VISOR BEZEL, PASSING LAMP Email Product Info Price: $48.62 Msrp: $59.95 A must have complement to the Visor Style Headlamp Trim Ring, these chrome-plated Visor Style Trim Rings recess the passing lamp into the housing, and add a traditional eyebrow design to the passing lamp shell. The trim ring stretches the profile of the bike for a long, lean appearance Fits: Fits 62-later models equipped with Original Equipment or accessory Auxiliary Lamp Kits. (Sold in pairs).
  10. What FLB said and for RV and Marine Use check out West Marine, Camping World,Academy Sports, etc for ones rated to leave out in the weather for extended periods and higher outputs, although not for 15.00. RSTDdog
  11. Do you have a part number for these? Are you using them with the stock Yamaha Passing light bucket or are you using harley passing light buckets. Those look really nice and match the headlight bucket exactly. Please provide some details on what is involved. Very nice bike. Thanks for sharing RSTDdog
  12. Ring free is a fuel system cleaner and decarbon product. Its not a fuel stabilizer as such like the startron and stabil products. When I worked at a Yamaha dealer years ago the rep told me that ring free is a highly concentrated version of chevrons Techron fuel additive. If you read the bottle you will see they have a clean up concentration ( 2 oz/gallon) and maintenance concentration (1oz/ 10 gallons). Ring free is very popular among the two stoke yamaha outboard crowd, particularly the OX66 variants (two stroke, fuel injection with an Oyxgen sensor in the exhaust) I like the product, it contains no alchohol. I use it in my outboard periodically. Not sure how susceptible the Royal engines are to carbon build up, I'm thinking if you run quality fuel, keep it tuned and ride often, carbon build up should be minimal for the V4. Its not cheap, 26.00 for a quart IIRC, but treats 320 gallons in maintenance concentration and 16 gallons in clean up . Overall Still cheaper than buying the retail techron product at the auto parts store. RSTDdog
  13. By Larry I assume you mean Carbon One? Is he or has he made some custom driving light mounts already? I would possibly be interested in this as well. In terms of the OEM set up, there are several sets on ebay from 223.00-253.00. I wanted the Tri-bar lamps which are discontinued. I picked up a set of the tribar lamps only new in box for 79.00 on ebay. Best deal I have found on just the mount is 121.00 so unless I find a cheaper mount, my set will end up being 200.00. I don't recall seeing anyone buy them for less than 200-225 ish. I haven't tried pricing them through the discount online dealers like yamahasportsplaza or stadium yamaha since I wanted the tribar set up. Just need the mount now. RSTDdog
  14. DO you have any pictures ? Thanks, RSTDdog
  15. Most everything has been said. Both are good bikes. The one that fits you best is what you should go with. You haven't said how much these bikes are going for? Sounds like you are shopping at a dealer. Not always a bad thing if they have the bikes prepped and ready to go, new tires, etc. But you may pay a premium in price vs a private sale. Alot of deals to be had out there on Motorcycles on craigslist, etc if you look around. Of course spring time in your area is the sellers season. If you are not real mechanically inclined or comfortable inspecting a bike your self, any reputable private seller should let you take it to dealer for inspection. When buying privately, Typically a one owner used bike is a pretty safe bet. RSTDdog
  16. Here is one take on it where the quick release back rest was modified with a platform to take a tour pack. Either modify yours or buy a spare to modify. This is one of the best executions of that idea I have seen. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68329 Lots of other trunk mounting options and threads if you search "trunk" in the RSTD forum. I ended up buying a used venture trunk mount bracket and bolting a Harley tour pack to it. Four bolts to remove the tour pack and four bolts to remove the trunk mount bracket is quick enough for me. I can tell you once its on, your wife won't want to ride with the stock backrest anymore. RSTDdog
  17. As already stated, Its high. At a dealership so its likely priced so they can make you feel good about your trade-in. Some motorcycle shops price and operate the same way as car dealers. RSTDdog
  18. Did you replace just the springs or did you also install the racetech cartridge emulator? Thanks, RSTDdog
  19. Well I haven't ridden in a 40 mph head wind and I'm unlikley to try and see if I get 15mpg if I burn up a tank at 115 mph (should be roughly the same as 75 + 40 wind ??) I don't doubt you, but that still seems like a drastic drop in MPG to me for just speed and wind. You run a stock shield or do you have an oversize (clearview, etc) ? I know people have reported losing a few mpg with the big wide clearview shield in normal conditions. RSTDdog
  20. If it was leaking, overflowing gas, it probably did that before. Fuel tends to muck up the carbs worse on the left (side stand side) of the bike, and old varnished gas can run toward the rubber diaphragm and make it stick to the cover, keeping the slide from pulling open when you open the throttle. There are also air jets under the cover where the diaphragms are and if those are clogged, the diaphragm and slide wont respond correctly to the vacuum/pressure changes when the throttle is opened. Lots of possibilities. Glad to hear they will look into for you and try to fix it. You are entitled to a properly running bike. RSTDdog
  21. Typically you drill a small hole in them and insert a sheet metal screw and pull them out. Wrap tape on the drill bit to limit how far it goes. try a #6 or a #8 screw. Have you ever had the carbs off and inspected them internally? You could have a partially plugged pilot jet. This is the actually jet inside the carburetor. The screws you are accessing are the mixture screws that adjust the the amount of fuel through the pilot circuit. While richening these screws can help, the effect will be minimal or ineffective if the jet inside the carburetor itself is clogged. RSTDdog
  22. Not to Hijack the OPs thread (which I am doing), but I think this statement needs a few more data points. With a 5.3 gallon posted capacity , the above translates into 15.0 MPG assuming you left with something close to a full tank (fuel up to the filler neck?) What was the sum total of the conditions that led to 15.0 mpg? Wind speed, Bike speed, Loading, trailer??? I think the worst tank I have ever seen was in the 25 mpg range, riding two up ( 360 lbs)with the windshield and bags packed. I can't envision headwinds alone dropping me another 10 mpg but I don't tow a trailer either. My typical tanks are in the 33-35 mpg range two up with the windshield. Any headwinds capable of dropping me to 15mpg I would probably choose not to actually ride my RSTD in those. Without more facts, getting 15 mpg tells me you may still have some running problems. RSTDdog
  23. I have read somewhere here that there were two versions of the 404 and one lasts longer than the other. Someone wrote there was a difference in the sidewall markings. It was in a tire thread and there are only "a few" of those on here so should be easy to find in search..... Certainly no harm in running it. One less tire you have to buy, RSTDdog
  24. If you are really running on all 4 cylinders and you can't get over 65 with the windshield on a couple of things come to mind. First I doubt they did a thorough job cleaning the carburetors. There are 4 of them, one for each cylinder, and doing this right takes the better part of 4- 6 hrs. Everything needs to be clean and spotless inside. There is no "thats good enough" when it comes to carbs. A couple of partially plugged jets, improperly adjusted floats, it may run but not great. Another issue may be the fuel pump. It has an electric fuel pump. If this is bad, it won't move enough fuel to the carbs under load. If you turn the key on, without starting, you should hear it run for a bit and slow down and stop as it builds the pressure up. Best time to listen for it is when its cold before you start it the first time. How many miles on this bike? I would investigate the fuel pump as well as the fuel filter. If you can't hear the fuel pump run, take it off the bike, squirt carb cleaner in both sides of it and cycle it on and off several times. Use some jumper wires and a 12 volt battery. Its a solenoid type electric pump and varnished gas can lock it up just enough so that it doesn't pump fuel. If after doing that the fuel pump doesn't work, you will need to replace it. The Yamaha one is pricey. A quick search here will turn up an automotive pump that some use as a replacement. Replace the fuel filter while you are in taking off the pump. As someone else mentioned, check that the fairing lowers are on (black plastic things on either side of the radiator and they partially cover the airbox. These bikes will not run right with the lowers off. Also check that no one has drilled holes or other wise modified the airbox. If you are not mechanically inclined, you need to get this bike to someone who knows what they are doing. This bike running correctly will do 95 in 3rd with the windsheild on and two up. Welcome to the site, let us know how you make out. RSTDdog
  25. The venture passenger hand grips attach to the side rails and to the Venture Trunk mount bracket. If you are not using the trunk mount bracket you would have to fab or modify where/how that end of the mounts attach. I can't recall seeing it done by anyone with out the trunk bracket.
