I had heard there was a great difference in the handling when you swap to the E3 or Avon. I pulled a set of 404's off at 5425 miles and replaced both of them with a new set of E3's...what they said was right...big difference in handling even at low speed. I still have the front and on the second rear tire with a little over 22000 miles on the bike. The only thing I do not like about the E3's...the rear will start feathering on the sides causing it to be noisy (like a ground grip) when you get the bike off center... But the last a long time, hold up good, handle good, and do great in wett conditions for me. I would like to try the Avon...but seems they are having some cracking problems right now. E3's are usually cheaper than the Avon. Maybe one day...

Lewis, I really appreciate all you do for St Judes. I know it is not easy and you put in a lot of time into this. Now let me help and lets keep this thread toward the top so all will be sure and see it every day. Come on folks...there is some kid that needs some new treatment and we need to help pay for it...bid high and bid often.

I also have noticed this year my mileage has went down. I first noticed it when we took off two up to Orange Beach... On the way down there it seemed to take a little more to fill up, and did not think much about it. Coming back...we were getting close to home and I was getting close to 135 miles to a tank...I usually get 150-175 out of a tank easily with out no problems or having to switch over to reserve. I got to 142 miles and it started cutting out...switched over to reserve and made it the rest of the way home. It was one of the hottest days we had this summer...106'F that day, and I was running 75 or so. I changed the plugs and did a carb sync and checked the exhaust pipes from a cold start to make sure they were all firing...it is not as bad as it was when we went to the smoky mountians this year but it was not as good as I remember. It kinda had me nervous on the blue ridge parkway...you have to kinda time your gas stops there. Usually if I fill it up pretty good...no hole in the filler neck....I could get close to 100 miles before the gauge started to move off full. I am thinking about doing the famous float adjustment and checking my coils with an ohm meter. I kinda suspect maybe the coils were beaking down a little due to so much heat on that trip back from Orange Beach.

I am very disappointed no new upgrade to our beloved Venture. But I am kinda relieved also cause I would probably go into debt if they did bring out a new one like we are hoping for with the new VMAX engine. The new 20K price tag is a shocker to me, but I guess they are trying to build up the funds to pay for the R&D on the new upgrade or preparing us for the sticker shock of the upgraded bike. I can already hear the dealers in a few years..."New upgraded bike only 1K more than the 22K of the 2nd Gen model....what a deal" As they loose more and more customers...I am not so sure they will have a touring base to buy a upgraded model. I am really suprized they brought out the Striker...new engine and all. Liquid cooled 80 CI V twin???? Maybe they are thinking a little bit. I think I will ride mine a while...then go look close at the BMW...I hear they are coming out with a in-line 6 with 160 hp in a touring bike? I will have to learn to like all that tupperware and top heavy I guess. Bought my son a 2010 Raider for graduation last Thursday...got a pretty good deal, I guess but it was a fight. Just like going into a used car dealer. I felt dirty after I got home. One good thing...it was cheaper than a truck.

I am gonna be good and not stir this up any more than it already is...I see both sides. Be seen or possibly distract. I wear a bright yellow/green vest and that works pretty good. It don't look as COOL as some of them black leather vest...but I rather be alive than COOL. I have had folks pull over in front of me, and I think it was cause of that Vest. They needed to get out of my way anyway. Let me just ask one thing...do they cause your head light bulb to fail prematurely since it is turning on and off (heaing up and cooling off) I thought about installing one but my concern would it dramatically decrease the life of my Silverstar ultra.

I think you need to look real close at the bead of the tire and make sure it is seated evenly all the way around. There should be 2 small lines next to the bead...use use this as a reference. I have never notices my E3's being flat sided. I changed the rear a few months back with my 2nd E3 and the front has over 20,000 miles on it still holding up good.

Probably better deals on line...unless you want to

Zumo 660...best accessory I have purchased for the bike... Works great, never had any problems at all. No regrets spending that much money. I can pick out my route with the mapping software and run those back roads to really see America. Dump it in the GPS and forget it. I love the fact that it comes with a windshield adapter for your car, that way I can use it all the time, not just while on the bike. I would highly recommend the lifetime maps. 4 map updates a year comes in handy. Also Garmin is really good about updates to the 660 software...I gues they are fixing bugs I have not found but I have notices during the upgrades small new features, that come in handy...example now my speed shown in the bottom corner turns red when I am over the posted speed limit.

That is one thing that really pisses me off about Wally World. They have something good...you start buying it regularly and bang...they stop stocking it. Dang... why did they do that. Motorcraft oil, Westly white wall cleaner in the 1/2 gallon refills, Mobil 1 motorcycle oil, Orange Blast in the half gallon bottle...once in a while you might find one of these items on the shelf...the rest of the time you are wasting it going there after it. IT is like they get you hooked coming in for these products then stop and make you walk over to that area to look everytime you come to the store. I have about stopped going there anymore.

front or rear?
-
Now why did you ask that? I do...7 of the 16oz Ratio Right measuring cup and then 6.5 ozs usually comes just about right. Old motocross racing thing I guess. On the 2 strokes you had to loosen a screw to see if the oil level was right or dump the premeasured amount in and GO. Sorry it is the way I am wired.

I think those are LA chopper pipes with the black tips. These and the Rhinehart racing mufflers come with black tips...after a while they turn purple. Buddy of mine has a full Rhinehart racing pipes on his harley ultra. He paid big big buck for the full exhaust and you can imagine how POed he was when they turned a funky purple. He took the tips off and had them powder coated for $15 buck and all is well now.

Some new thoughts on clutch basket whine
CMIKE replied to straycatt's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I am not so sure... My clutch noise sounded more like a Jenson mobile (the Cartoon)...more like a high pitched twirp or chirp and that sound was on the right side if the engine. I have always had a gear noise in the left side...the I basket did not do nothing for that. It does get louder as the temps outside go up around 90-100'F. I am not so sure cutting the teeth of the clutch basket will fix that gear whine. It could be a little rear end noise, but suspect it is where the output shaft of the transmission changes angle to the drive shaft. That as I understand is where you loose a lot of horse power...extreme drive angles. Recently put on some Krome Works pipes to help drowned out that noise. I get frustrated with that gear noise once in a while and go looking at other bikes...but then I realize this is the most comfortable bike on the market..so I wear ear plugs for a few days. But the VSTAR custom 650 does not have all that gear noise, slight clutch chirp but no gear noise. -
That is a wonderful thing...coming home to the folks that love you. Great video. I cannot help but think of the ones that do not make it home and the impact it has on their families. We need to pray everyday for those men and women serving our country and give them all our support.

CMIKE replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You 1st gen guys never miss an opportunity to get us 2nd Gen guys...so here goes. They put this second key lock position with the parks lights on the 1st gen cause they knew you was gonna break down on the road and have to leave it overnight. -
Some new thoughts on clutch basket whine
CMIKE replied to straycatt's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had a dealer the other day tell me the 2010 models are now Fuel Injected. What worried me I kinda half way believed him...enough to bend down and look at the carbs under the edge of the tanks....yeah right. Trust but verify everything they say. He also told me the 2011 has the new Vmax engine and frame with the stratoliner deluxe fairing on it with some bigger bags and tour pack than the 2010 venture with a 300 rear tire. I will believe it when I see it. Where do they find these guys? -
pulled over for going through red light last night
CMIKE replied to saddlebum's topic in Watering Hole
This can be a problem...since we have the Right on Red here...I usually turn right and then u turn back into the road I was on. I thought about those red light magnets but, I had heard they do not work to well...but maybe they do. -
Really nice job. It would not do for me to have one that big...my wife could fill it up with so much stuff a 3/4 pickup could not pull it. Beautiful trailer.
-
Ok...Boss...hang in there buddy...you in our prayers big time... We GOT to save the eye. I think the power of prayer will work in the case...we have to pull together for it to work.

Black Rineharts on RSV Midnight
CMIKE replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Really nice pipes...buddy of mine has them on his Other brand ultra classic and they sound great. One thing to watch out for...The black tips turn purple after a period of time. He had to have his powder coated to get them back black.
