I'm in need of some parts for floorboards for a 1st Generation
uncledj replied to Marvin81's topic in Watering Hole
I also got a set of floorboads, but am missing the spacers. I also got them off a member last fall,...got them re chromed, but when I went to install them I only then realized the spacers were missing. I planned on attacking this issue again this winter, but if I can get a set made to exact specs, it'd make it a lot easier. If you're up to it, I'd REALLY APPRECIATE you making me a set. If you can do it, please lemme know. Shoot me an e-mail if you're up to it. ( would require 4 spacers, 2 for each side ) Thanks, and have a great day ! John Sheehn uncledjm14@yahoo.com- 20 replies

Bongobobny may be right, (he's right about how to test it), but the white stuff you're seeing shouldn't have much use as an indicator. Usually when a capacitor goes bad, there's a spot on top that'll pop out. I'm guessing that your cap is black, round....in that case, there'll be a hole in the plastic top about ? 1/4 ? or so that should be visibly blown out, and if it'll leak anything, it'll be oil. It's been a while since I've had to work on well pumps, I'm actually an HVAC technician, but feel free to call me if you want me to help walk you through it. John 614 595 2046

:think:Somethin' sounds fishey. Maybe someone switched the Winchester rounds with shoddy reloads? I dunno, but I've done a lot of shooting in my day, and have never had problems with Winchester ammo. Remington shotgun shells are pretty lousy though. At the current pricing, I think I'm gonna have to set up the reloading stuff and re-acquaint myself with my old hobby. In any case, something doesn't sound right.

I tore down my first gen (87) to do some overdue maintenence, and finally took her out for a quick shakedown, and I must say, since I put in the new clutches and doubled up on the spring, this bike has no problem pulling the front wheel off the ground. WOW does she run! In any case I changed the clutches, changed the fork seals, upgrading to progressive springs, pulled and cleaned the starter, replaced the fuseblock, upgrading to atc fuses, added auxilliary driving lights, installed "highway" floorboards way up front, stripped, polished and clearcoated the engine covers, replaced front brakes, yanked the cheesy am fm cassette and cb that the last owner had installed, (don't plan on using them) Installed a pretty cool GPS with MP3 capability, installed a OEM trunk luggage rack, (it's a standard, so it didn't have one), and repaired the broken tabs on the bodywork. So now, with the riding season more than half over, I'm ready to start riding again, and I'm excited. I do HVAC work, so I'm usually pretty busy from May until about now, so I usually don't have much time to ride in the best part of Summer anyway, but I'll try to make up for it over the next month or two. I'm really pleased with how this bike runs. I only bought it this time last year, after researching the older "heavy" bikes, and decided that the Venture was the bike for me because it was generally accepted that it had more power and better handling than the GW, and I think I made a wise choice. I'm not into all the fancy schmancy stuff anyway, I just wanted a bike that the wife would be comfortable on the back of.....she never liked riding on the back of my Nighthawk, but now I think I'll like riding this more than my beloved 85 Nighthawk cb700sc. Just wanted to share my excitement, thanks for your attention.

Lemme know if you can't find one. I just took the CB out of my first gen, but hadn't planned on selling it. If you can't find one elsewhere, let me know, I may be willing to help a brother out.

I tore down the front shocks on my 87 Standard to replace the leaking fork seals. I had a heck of a time trying to get the wire retainer ring back in place. (just beneath the dust seal)...It seemed that I couldn't get either the top bushing or the seal to seat down far enough to leave room for the retainer wire. I pulled it apart again ( a few times ) to figure why they wouldn't seat far enough, until I got smart and compared the new seal to the old one, and found that the Pyramid brand seal was about 1/16" taller than the old one, which was just enough to keep the retainer wire from going in. I got another set from Bikebandit, which matched the originals perfectly, and the darn thing went right together. I got the Pyramid (green package) from e-bay. They looked good, but the little bit of added height was a killer. Hope this helps someone avoid the cornfusion I went through.

I feel for ya. It's just that kind of stuff that made me move away from Columbus. (OH) I have a bit of a commute, but my drive's 750' long...can't see the house from the road. I rarely feel a need to lock up, but sometimes still do. There's not too many urban areas where I'd feel secure these days. It's really sad that many of us feel the only answer is to get away, but what else can ya do? We've all had things stolen, and it makes you feel violated, but this too will pass. Best of luck to you.

I have an 87 venture standard that has the typical hot start problem. (Turns over slow when hot ) I'm doing a clutch change and I'm polishing and clearcoating the engine covers, so I have the bike mildly torn down, and I figure it'd be worth taking the starter apart and cleaning it, and seeing what I can do to improve the internal ground contacts. I seem to remember that a member had a detailed post on starter removal, but cannot seem to find it. Anyone remember the post?....if so, how can I find it?

Looks like the paint or gasket remover is the ticket. I was concerned that it may affect the aluminum, but since y'all have had good luck with it, my fears have subsided. Thanks.

I have an 87 Venture Standard that needs the aluminum engine covers polished, but I have to get the old, flaking, yellowed clearcoat off first. Once I get it off, I'll shine it up as best I can, then re-cover it with clearcoat. (spray can) Any suggestions?

I've been wanting to do the same thing, using a gps with mp3 capability instead of an IPOd. I'd like to hear music, interrupted by gps directions, or by CB. I'd sure like to see a schematic of what you did. Sounds pretty cool.

Thanks Y'all. Im not too worried about a stiffer clutch, I've got a pretty good grip so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm lookin' forward to this new clutch system....I hope it doesn't make me beat the bike up too much testing it out.

I'm needing new clutches in my 87 standard...getting some slippage when I goose it a bit. I ordered a clutch kit and replacement spring from Buckeye Performance (nice people, fair prices). I spoke with Rick and asked him what I should do to get a little bit tougher clutch, and his suggestion was OEM clutches, and a new wave spring, suggesting that I double up the spring, new one on top of the old one to stiffen up the clutch. He warned that it'd make the lever stiffer, but didn't think it'd be a problem. He seemed to know what he was talkin' about, and I trust him, but I was just curious if anyone has tried this, and what the result was. I'm planning on setting it up to ride two up, sometimes with a trailer, and want a pretty solid clutch. Hopin' to get some input from someone who's been there, done that.

I bought a similar cover for a 82 cb900 that I have, and can't say that I have any complaints. It's not very heavy, and I doubt it'll give me the life of an OEM cover, but for less than $20, whaddya want? I believe mine sold for .99 plus $18 shipping.

Yippee! Thanks, Gene...I was thinking that you wouldn't be able to get around to it. I gave you the credit card info last fall, it should still be current, but if you have any issues gimme a call and we'll get you paid. Thanks again.

Jersy: Thanks, but I was asking about the removable bags that are form fitting. At one time Beer30 was thinking about making some, but I think his business won't give him the time. I'll keep looking, eventually a set will turn up.

Anyone know where I can get a set of these elusive liners for my '87?

I'm in. That psychopath can't be allowed to get away with that kind of murderous, irresponsible behavior. What makes people do stuff like that? If you can get it together, I'd be happy to contribute.

Can't get my rollin' 'till I get my floorboards back from the %&*@#$ chrome shop. I sent them in to get chromed last fall, and I'm to the point of calling every day to bug them. I've demanded my parts back, chromed or not, and the owner won't call me back, so I keep calling and talking to the secretary. I'm to the point where I'm going to have to file suit in small claims court...but I don't want it to come to that......I just want my stuff back. Avoid Blakleys polishing in Dayton, OH. Freebird: thanks for the offer, but I don't know what you can do..The story I keep getting is that my parts are still at the platers, as if Blakleys has no responsibility for my problem, even though they were happy to accept the required $100 deposit The thing that really bugs me is that they absolutely will not call me back, although they always promise to. I told them that, after this long, I just need my parts back, finished or not, and they won't give me any response other than, again, "they're still at the platers". I called them again today, and she said "maybe Monday".....I won't hold my breath. I'll keep calling them daily until I either get my parts back, or until I finally decide to file suit. It wouldn't be so bad except that a set of driver floorboards are pretty hard to find for a first gen. Thanks again, I'll post if I get them back.

Hey Gene, any word on when you can start making the first gen trunk and saddlebag liners? -
I used to live in Key Largo, working on the mainland (Homestead). There were a few days each year when on the stretch between Homestead and Key Largo, these birds would dive on the bugs around US1, making it a pretty hairy ride on a bike. I hit/killed three on one trip down "the stretch". Not much you can do but keep your head down and hope for the best. I used to love riding down to Key West, but was back there a few years ago in a cage and was dissapointed when I saw how much traffic there is now. I'm sure I'll ride down there again in the not too distant future. This Ohio weather's gettin' old.
