One of my speakers was shot on my 90, so I replaced them with a new set. I got everything back together and the radio was working great. A few days later I went for a several hour ride and again the radio was working great. But after I pulled the bike into the garage the radio just stopped working along with the cassette and CB. I checked all the fuses under the battery cover and they were all good. Is there a hidden fuse somewhere else that I should check? Or is there a wire that might have come loose? Thanks, Al

Another carb question
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have 2 bikes and try to ride each at least once a week in the off season and trade the off in the riding season. After it warms up it idles fine and runs fine, but the MPG is only in the upper 20's Thanks for all the replies if I can get this sorted out I think this will be a really nice 2 up touring bike. Al -
Hi All I finely got my weak front braking issues resolved (thanks skydoc) and the bike (90) is running pretty good, but only getting in the upper 20’s in MPG. Supposedly the cards were rebuild before I bought the bike, but I pulled the air filter to check that the sliders move back and forth during acceleration. It looked like there was gas gushing around on the #1 carb that I didn’t see on the others. I’m a total novice on carbs, but that didn’t look right to me. A few other symptoms. When starting the bike the RPM’s start out around 400. If I use the choke the bike will die, so I just let it it idle a few minutes and can then ride it. I’ve run several cans of SeaFoam without a noticeable difference. Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Al

On my 90 I'll get the volume just right and then change the station and can barely hear the darn thing. I couldn't figure it out, why was it cutting in and out like that? After a while I noticed the mute button right above the seek button on the handle bar controls. I clicked it, problem solved.

CB Question
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Guys for all the suggestions. I think I'll find a truck stop set it to channel 19 and see if I hear anything. Al -
How do you know if your CB is actually working? My CB comes on, all the knobs work and it goes through all the channels, but besides a bit of static, I have never heard a peep out of out of it. I have tied though the speakers and headset and have never heard any talking. Unfortunately I don’t know anyone who owns a CB so I don’t have a way to test it. Thanks, Al

Replace fork oil with new springs?
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK that was to easy. Even for a mechanical klutz like me. I finished this job in about 2 hours. It's raining now so test ride in the morning ;-) -
OK I admit I’m a bit lazy. The fork seals were replaced a few months ago including (I’m assuming) new oil, now I’m installing progressive springs. Do I need to drain the fork oil since it’s still almost new or can I just pull out the old springs and put in the new? Thanks, Al PS how do you get the old spring out, with a coat hanger or something?

Weak front brakes
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
RE: Maybe you know this already, but remember that when you pull the hand lever you only get one front caliper, or HALF the front brakes. The linked system gives you the other front caliper and the rear together when you push the foot brake. If you're used to riding bikes with normal brakes, you're accustomed to getting all the front brake power with the lever. So you need to compare apples to apples. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hmm. I was not aware of this. That explains why some people de-link the brakes. This is the first bike I have ever owned with linked brakes and I admit that I am used to using the front brakes most of the time. So with the linked brakes should you be able to stop the bike quickly using just the front brake? Or do you need to learn to always use both front and rear brakes? Thanks, Al -
Weak front brakes
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I should have mentioned in my first post that the pads have been replaced, the fluid replaced and all brake lines have been bled. To check for sticking calipers what would I look for? Al -
My new to me 90 Venture seems to have fairly weak front brakes. The rear aren’t to bad but the front could really use some help. In reading some old posts it looks like the fix is to replace the front with calipers from a R1 or R6 and/or upgrade to stainless brake lines. And de-linking the brakes. For a novice like me, swapping the calipers looks like it would be a straight forward task. Replacing the brake lines would be a bigger job and de-linking the brakes bigger still. So my question, would just replacing the calipers make much of a difference? Will any year R1 or R6 calipers work? Do the rotors need to be replaced along with the calipers? Do the brakes need to be de-linked when upgrading? I’m thinking of upgrading in stages and seeing what helps. Thanks, Al

Moving foot controls forward?
algie1100 replied to Big Hack's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hi Condor, I just got a set of OEM pegs to replace my floorboards. When you swapped yours out did you have to remove that iron bar that goes under the bike that the front of the floorboard are attached to? Thanks, Al -
Where can I find a fuse
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for all the suggestions I decided to take Georges advice and wire in a blade type fuse holder that way I don't have to worry about not being able to find a fuse when I need one. Thanks Al -
Where can I find a fuse
algie1100 posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I managed to blow the main 40 amp flat fuse. And then blew the 2 spares that I had figuring out why it blew in the first place. I have searched high and low and cannot find any replacements. I went to 3 different bike dealers and 2 auto parts store and radio shack. Nothing. Where the heck do you find these things? Thanks, Al -
Trunk trim for 90 Venture
algie1100 replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think I found one from Bob the Atlanta DragonSlayer. It's my own fault. It was a bit loose and I was planning on taping it up with duct tape before riding home. but unfortunately I forgot. I noticed that there's not much on eBay for these bikes. Al -

I'm looking for the trim piece that wraps around the back trunk and covers the lights. My bike is a 1990. Thanks Al -
I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have an extra trim piece that fits over the lights on the rear of the trunk (1990) that they are willing to sell? The piece that wraps around the back of the lower trunk. It was on the bike when I picked it up, but if fell off somewhere in the Arizona desert. The trunk must have been damaged at one point because there doesn’t look like it was attached to much of anything. Thanks Al

I’m going to get some seefoam and add that to the gas just as insurance. Thanks Al
