I need electrical help again......
Herb In Texas replied to 1BigDog's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Sounds like poor battery connections. Start by Cleaning the battery terminals and cables. Now you said that your relitivly inexperienced with electrical stuff so I will go elementary. To do a good job of cleaning the cables and posts you must disconect them. Negative first then positive. Once you have them removed it is just as easy to take the battery out and get it up on the bench where you can really get at it to clean it. You want to remove any and all crud that does not look like shiney metal from the posts. some goes for the terminals on the wires going to the battery. Use a wire brush for both operations. since you have the battery on the bench time for a load test. Find a friend who has a battery load tester. Connect it to the battery, red to positive and black to negitive. take note of the voltage. Should be 12 to 12.5 or so. engage the switch to apply load. this will simulate the action of the starter motor. hold the switch for about fifteen seconds, note voltage. Now if the voltage drops to 10 or 11 and holds the battery is most likley ok. If the needle goes down slowly and continues to fall time for a new one. second part of the test is recovery voltage, Once you release the load the battery should on its own rebuild to right around 12v. This is not to say it is recharging itself it is mearly recovering to normal voltage. If it does not then you likley have a weak or dead cell. when your reinstall this battery or a new one depending on test results, lightley coat your reconnected terminals and posts with plain old #2 grease. This will help prevent corrosion in the future. Now to stir the pot. Battery tenders are ok for storage but every day use IMHO will destroy your battery. Ride everyday and let the charging system do its job. -

Clutch Help 2nd Gen Needed
Herb In Texas replied to Rev's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Should pull then. Barring a transmission failure. It sounds like something came loose and got her all bound up. print out the parts blowup of the clutch basket and start to disassemble. Your gonna have to anyway to get to the driven side of the clutch out so you can try the trans by hand turning the input with your hand or suitable tool to see if you have an internal trans problem. any noise or funky odors when she laid down. as a second thought some on here have said that if you use the oils marked fuel saving or something like that. it has friction modifiers in it that will eat up our wet clutches. May want to check the oil container from the last service. -

As far as the handle being locked all I can say is you need to disassemble and inspect the internal workings of the clutch release mechanisim for loose broken or binding parts. -

You never mentioned friction discs or springs in your list of replacement parts. -

I been kinda quiet on this one. But gotta throw my Kudos to Yamaha West. Thats my dealer. I needed a new windshield, guess what IN STOCK. So they are sending it to you? I get off work in 45 mins. I could pick it up and haul it on down if you need to. Can't leave till morning tho. Gotta go feed the Pasture Art. Again Mike and the other parts guys are great. Arron is the service manager he to is great. these folks never have let me down. Well it did take a whole Saturday to get my Mighty Steed purchased serviced and out on the road. Let me know if I can help in any way. I am off tomorrow. God's speed Herb -
Me and my gal both wear these. Wind noise is nil, speakers fit in fine and at the right hieght, (did not cut anything out on ours). And the fighter pilot shield is just freakin cool. As a side note we ordered them in HJC's color called aranthicite. Perfect match to the 08 grey.

Passing lamps...

Looks Good Lt. But I noticed your C.B. Antenna is on the wrong side. Mine was too when new. Might want to check out the cable to be sure. The C.B. Radio is under the travel trunk. If the wire on the left antenna goes under there then they are swapped . the cable for the antenna on the right should go all the way up under the front Fairing. Thats where the radio is mounted. Great looking lights, I still ain't ponied up the cash to buy mine yet.- 13 replies

Just the tech library is worth the twelve bucks. I bought my Venture on 7 July 2008 And now have more than 40,000 miles on it. this site has saved me a bunch of headaches and trouble. Hell my dealership even references it. They are the ones who told me about it. (rambleing) Any way when you ride those kind of miles it is great to know that should you ever have trouble out in the boonies all you got to do is find a wifi and log on. Some one will be able to help. Not to mention the entertaining stuff. Thanks Don for all you do and forall you have done. -
Front end of bike wobbles when pulling trailer
Herb In Texas replied to YamaPapa's topic in Trailer Talk
I pull a trailer all the time. From what I gleen from the post is, No wobble at road speed only when turning from a stop. Others have said take off straight then turn. This is correct! The wobble comes from FLEX in both the rear structure of the motor cycle and the trailer tounge. As you take off and turn load is applied to the (for lack of a better term) fender mount and trailer tounge. this causes them both to flex sideways a bit then as they recover you are increasing speed wich starts the whole thig over again in a rapid sequence, resonating through the bike and into the front fork and bars where you notice it. Build an angled brace from the front of your bag mount near the frame of the bike to the outer most corner. one for each side. then if your tounge is a channel type affair lay a piece of 10 gauge strap a 1/2" wider than the tounge and stitch weld it on. Other wise pull off straight make your turn then get mostly straight before romping on the throtle. Herb -
The bike is covered under warenty no mater who does the service. But keep in mind, The dealer is the first step in getting waranty work done. So it is best in my opinion to atleast purchase your supplys from them. And while you are there visit with the service manager and the guy who sold you the bike. They will go a lot farther in pushing an iffy claim if they consider you number one, a good customer and number two, someone they call Friend. And keep your reciepts and log book up to date. There is a service record in the back of my Venture owners manual so I am sure it is the same with yours. I also write the milage of the service on the reciept. just cause I have OCD

Intercom volume adjustment
Herb In Texas replied to phochief's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Had the same problem yesterday. She heard me fine, I could not hear her. tried the volume adjust but only caused her to turn down the volume on her end. Turns out when she put her helmet on the mike was moved out of position and subsequently could not pick up the sound. readjusted mic and now hear her loud and clear. -
I could, but I don't want to step on venturedads toes. He has an established business with this site. Were it not for having "tools to fix tools" I likly would have purchased his. I suppose I could remove the hitch photo it and post back the pics then if you still wanted to have one built maybe a local shop or handy niebor could help you out. BTW sorr it took so long to post back Been busy IT IS SPRING TIME IN TEXAS.

I built mine. Copied the end brackets of the spacer bar and a couple of short pieces of 1.5" square tube with a 6"x4" piece of 1/4" plate for the safty chains to hook to. Then I shortened a stinger from Northern Tool. 1 1/4" square. Drilled holes to match for the reciever pin and wala. Took longer for the paint to dry than it did to make. Plan to build a flag mount to fit this reciever for PGR missions. want to fly the US, Texas, And PGR or MIA flags in trio.

Most odd thing ever hauled behind bike?
Herb In Texas replied to Herb In Texas's topic in Trailer Talk
Good info, I have been considering that very thing. 14ft Jon boatand trolling motor. Was not sure of LIFT of the wind under the boat. As a pickup would block the wind but a bike would allow the air to get under the boat and cause handling trouble. Guess I better go buy a boat and trailer!! -

Looks good Goose. I would like a closer look, by chance will you be at either of the two PGR missions this week, one this PM and one Fri AM here in N Texas? The one this afternoon is at DFW Cem. Tomorrow starts in Hurst to DFW and back to Hurst. As of now I plan to attend both. But as allways got to staySEmper Gumby. -

I saw that sliegh in another thread. Should of said it then, That is a first class rig. Lot of work for a good cause. Congrats on a job well done! -
I put one on the back of mine (front still stock brickstone), Best tire Iv'e ever rode. I found that the braking is more efficient. I locked the brick alot but not the Avon. cornres better and can't be beat on wet roads IMHO. Come spring I will change out the front. Can't seem to make me change out a tire thats not damaged or worn out. Even though I know it will be a vast improvement:thumbsup:

I hauled a feral Hog to the locker plant this morning behind my bike. I was curious as to what oddities ya'll have hauled. I sure did get some looks. I got quite a few the other day when I hauled a complete oak desk. Guess a trailer behind a bike is not an every day thing here in the DFW area. I may use my truck again when diesel drops to a buck a gallon again.
