YSS Shock test and deal for someone in NJ.
Bill in NJ replied to etcswjoe's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
ectswjoe, I just sent them an email. I am in north Jersey about an hour away so it's not that far. Unfotunately I just ordered and received a Hagon shock but haven't installed it yet. I'll wait to hear from them. Maybe it can help them come up with another shock option for the venture. Lord knows i have gotten more help then I probable deserve from the people on this site. Bill -

Oil leak leads to request for shim kit
Bill in NJ replied to Bill in NJ's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hi all, just finished with the valve check and the oil leak fix. All went well and everything was within spec. It is with out adoubt a PITA job though. Is was not hard just complicated in getting to the valves. Alot of stuff has to come off. Disassembley was easy. reassembly not so much. Trying to get my big hands and fingers in some of those spaces was not easy and it was tight trying to torque some of the bolts. I want to thank RandyR for the use of his shim kit and SkyDoc's words of encouragement. Bill -
Hi all. My 99 developed an oil leak from the rear valve cover a few months ago. Its now to the point I need to take care of it. I figure if I have to take all that stuff off to fix the leak, I might as well do the valves, although not looking forward to it. So now Im looking for a shim kit and tool to do the job. If anyone has one they can lend me I would certainly appreciate it. Bill

Thanks all. my first thought was a glogged tank filter too. Just didn't want to take it apart if we didn't need to. i'll have him start with the easy stuff first and have him check for the cap vent and work our way down the list. Thanks again. I'll let you all know what we find. Bill

HI all. A buddy i ride with has an 07 V Star Classic 1100 and is having a problem. After about 90 - 100 miles of riding or when it gets to about a half tank of fuel the bike loses power like its starving for fuel. If he stops and fuels up the problem goes away that is until the fuel runs down to about half tank. So what do you think?? I had him try seafoam because seafoam cures all but with no luck. Thanks. Bill

Jasonm., Check out http://www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/connectors.html just got a bunch for rebuilding mine with some good advice from Ruffy. Not sure if the terminals are the same for the 1 gen & 2nd gen bikes but check them out. Bill

Another rear shock ? with a twist
Bill in NJ replied to Bill in NJ's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks Seaking. I thought I would give it a shot. I had the progressives front and rear on the voyager and loved them. I guess ill just have to suck it up and pay the big bucks when the rear finally goes. maybe if I start saving now......... Bill -
Is there a non-air replacement possibility for the rear shock? My load is pretty consistent and don't neccessarily need the flexability of air. I change over to progressive shocks when I had a kawasaki voyager and was pretty happy with it. Sooo I was wondering if anyone has ever checked out a non-air replacement for our ventures. 2nd gen of course. The rears are showing some bad signs and I think it is getting close to replacement time. Thanks. Bill

Hi all. I replaced the negative pin on the plug a put the new r/r because the old one had some burning on it, put it all back together, tested it again and went for a ride. Bike is putting out 14.4 at the battery. Volt meter is reading the same. Just to test it I put on my driving lights, heated jacket and led lights. It still showed it charging around 13.8. So I am back on the road thanks to you guys. I really hate electrical problems but glad I have you guys to help out. Thanks again everyone. Bill

I was double checking all the grounds, by the way i found the main ground on the right side behind the cover in front of the tank, and connection and thought I would give it another try. started the bike and nothing. while the bike was running i move the r/r and stuck it behind some wires to move the bike and while moving the bike it fell. My volt meter lit up like a Chrismas tree. Got some help from my son, while he watched the meter i move the r/r around and of course the meter went off and on. Didn't do it the first time I tried it. So now I need to redo the Neg pin of the plug and that should do it. GeorgeS and Ruffy will automotive connectors work to repair the plug?? only want to do it once. Thanks again for all your help.
-
GeorgeS - I did charge the new battery with a real charger. tested both at the battery and at the r/r plug both at 13.6 volts. ordered the new r/r today should be here in a day or two then i'll see if that does it. By the way were are the grounds located that I should check. ediddy let me know how you make out,

First of all I want to thank everyone for all the info. I am Going to try a new regulator and see what happens. I checked and cleaned all the connectors and grounds I could find. tested everything again as well as inspected the plug. although there was some melting at the neg. pin area it looks good. I cleaned the plug and all pins seem tight except the neg pin is a little lose in the plug but tight connection with the wire. I am going to try to get the regulator tomorrow and try it. I will keep everyone informed as to what happens. Thanks again everyone!! Bill

I checked the r/r using a multi meter following the instruction from the Venturers.org tech library. Now what do I do if the plug can't be repaired?
-
I did not replace the r/r with a new one the old one tested ok so I put that one back in to check if there was a charge at the battery. Yes the 3 wires and the + - are all at one plug at the r/r. The plug at the r/r does have burn marks and slight melting on the - pin of the plug. it did test ok. I am thinking the plug to but not sure if I can get another plug with out replacing harness. I have to check it out. I did check voltage at the r/r plug and it reads the same as at the battery so i am assuming that part is ok. I check into the plug alittle more i am think with the burning/melting it might be there. Just not sure why all else test OK Thanks for your help. I let you know what happens.
-
I did that at the r/r connector and the ac readings were the same for all 3 at idle and they would all go up when the rpms went up and stay consistent along all 3. I then checked DC at the battery and had no change with the r/r replaced. Should this test be done with the r/r disconnected?
-
I'll try that. So far I tested it at the r/r connector and everything looks ok although there is visual burning on the neg pin and connector. But like i said the readings are still ok. I'll try to test it at the other connector to see what happens, If I can find it. Bill

Thanks GeorgeS. I am going to test stator, r/r and check all connection today. The battery did died and checking with a meter showed it "charging" at just under 12 while running.
-
Thanks Scooter Bob I have the manuals and unfortunately I am well aquanted with it.
-
OK just finished checking and it looks like its not charging. I get 11.8 while its running and the rpm's are up, so I guess it's the stator or could a bad regulator do that? just don't want to replace it if its not broke. Thanks.
-
Thanks guys i'll check it out. The 12 was just a quess on my part the meter goes to 10 then to 15 with a battery symbol in between. I'll let you know. Bill

Hi All I am having problem with I think the charging system. Here are the symptoms - Bike seems to be running fine but my volt meter (kuryakyn) shows a drop in voltage while riding. It reads around 12 then drops to 0 - blinks off and on afew times the 2 red lights will come on then the 2 yellow then goes back to reading around 12. again bike seems to run fine. Last week after a short ride the bike would not start so replaced the battery thinking that was it. So now I am thinking stator or regulator. What do you guys think?? Bill

Thanks Goose I didn't think so but I am always hoping for the easy fix. The way its wired I believe that it has to be somewhere between the switch and the relay powering the relay somehow. Thanks again Goose. I'll start taking things apart. Bill
