Stereo mounted on our windshield?
Dave77459 replied to GuthDaddy17's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I haven't tried it, but a gal I rode with once had a pair of midget powered speakers attached to her handlebars, connected to her iPod. She was riding a Hyosung GV250 cruiser bike -- really small -- and it worked fine. Powered by a cigarette lighter outlet. If you just want tunes, that could work. -
I ran into it with my car insurance, but my wife's insurance company is always lower than new quotes we get. I've heard that if you haven't changed insurance companies in a year, you are paying too much. They make money on those too lazy to look around.

I use Mapsource on my Garmin. I used to use Microsoft Streets and Trips (2005?), but didn't update it and now the maps are aged. I liked how you could tell it your range, and it would show you where you needed to stop. Then you could search around and find gas stations near there, or go back to find earlier stops. I imagine the newer versions are even better. My Mapsource is nice, especially how you can relay the information into Google Earth. But for pure route planning, MSST is better. Maybe I ought to spend the coin to upgrade.

Thanks for the heads up. I've put it on my calendar, in case the HLSR BBQ Cookoff doesn't conflict. Looks like a good time!

Great job! I too enjoy the "sinister black" vibe. I was thinking of fitting a black radio stub antenna in the third hole for use as a flag pole. Just an idea.

Rick did mine last week in time for the Houston M & E. When we got home after a mere 175 miles, my wife and I barely realized we'd been on a bike. No ache at all! I can't wait for our 475 mile trip this weekend to give it a real workout. I also took the time to inspect his workmanship. You can't even tell the cover had ever been off the seat. I think he hit the same staple holes! Way to go Rick! Dave

Problem with Carbon_One lift adapter
Dave77459 replied to davecb's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I found that my rod was slightly bent.* It's really hard to put in with the handle straight down, but facing forward it works easily enough. Then, I turn it backward as Larry said. * - get your minds out of the gutter!- 17 replies

As a soccer referee, there was no way to keep hydrated during a weekend tournament in Houston. Even if you drank during each stoppage, your stomach would be full before your kidneys could process the fluids. Many people are nearly dehydrated at any given time, because we simply don't drink enough. Trying to catch up when you are sweating off fluids is a losing battle. The secret to staying safe is prehydration. In short, you begin to tank up days before you think you will need the fluids. Make sure every cell is wet to near over-flowing. That way, you already have a leg up on hydration before you start. If you are planning a long ride on Saturday, begin drinking more than usual on Thursday. That way, come Saturday, you are starting with a full tank rather than running on reserve all day.

I think you got the Electrical Connection turn signals. You may find it helpful, or not, to read my detailed post regarding installation. I am very happy with mine, especially at night when the LEDs are very visible.

RSTD RepairPro manual?
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The one I was asking about is a CD, looks like. I have the one you are talking about (I think) that I bought off eBay as a downloaded PDF. -
This is what I got: RAM Mount GPSMAP 60 60C Series Zinc U-Bolt Rail Mount P/N: RAM-B-149Z-GA12U SKU: RAMB149ZGA12 (From GPSCity.com) Note that there are two parts: the rail bolt that attaches to the handle-bar (there are other options too) and the holder that attaches to the GPS. Separating them this way lets you decide where you want the GPS to go, and to get the right holder for your GPS. I use a GPSMAP 60CSx rather than a Zumo, for example. I preferred to use the U-bolt, but others have liked attaching it to the brake or clutch reservoir bolt. GPSCity sold a set with both the U-bolt and the GPS holder. Hope this helps. I suspect you might be a victim of having too many options.

My friend put a leather bottle holder / pocket on the saddle bag guards of his Harley. They stretch between the top of the front guard and the bottom. The right guard holds a water bottle, the left has a closing pocket for stuff. This puts stuff within reach while keeping his handlebars clear of junk. Anyone know a source for a RSTD-sized similar product?

In my MSF Rider's Edge class, they suggested that both are done. We had to learn to downshift while braking to pass the class. Note that one of the reasons you should use your brakes is that it turns on your brake light! This helps the vehicles behind you to know that you are slowing. Motorcycles downshifting can slow very quickly, and find a car on their back. So, yes, do downshift, but also use your brakes.

Backfire after oil change
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Oh, and it seems possible that the smoke is from an oil drip during filling. That side is where the oil filler is, and a drop or two could have hit the pipes. -
Backfire after oil change
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
It was sitting on a Carbon One lift adapter with legs, very level. I filled it based on the service manual quantities, and it was sighted to be just on the heavy side of halfway but no where near the top of the glass. Overfilling will cause a strange idle and backfiring on deceleration? -
I changed my own oil for the first time yesterday, and today I have a backfire on the right pipe during deceleration. More, it has a surging kinda sound in the idle. It's a subtle hiccup every so often that wasn't there before. Is there something I could have done during the oil change to cause this? If I take it to the dealer, can I claim warranty service? Or, should I wait for the Maintenance Day on March 15? Edit: I was looking at photos after posting this, and saw that when I first started the bike, the right pipe has "smoke" while the left does not. Is this a clue? RSTD RepairPro manual?
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
You are right about them listing the Engine Oil. I'm going to go ahead and blame Acrobat Reader, since it did not find "10W" "20W" or "SAE", which are listed right there in the General Specifications. (Mine is on page 2-1) It is also listed on page 3-22 with the "checking oil level" instructions. I apologize for bashing the manual, but I did seek and didn't find. I guess I am not so much unhappy with the service manual as wondering if the RepairPro manuals offer something complimentary. -
Has anyone bought the RepairPro RSTD Service Repair Manual? I see them on eBay (like this current one) and wonder how well done it is. I have that other eBay manual, the Yamaha Service Manual in PDF, and I don't like it. It lacks certain information I'd think would be covered (recommended oil grade and filter size?). I'm hoping this CD-based thing will be better. Is it?

Thanks for the information!

Where did you source the poles? I have a RSTD and want to put flags on the luggage rack. Dave

I am sorry you are having trouble. I think the problem I had with mine is that I was overly confident and rushed the right side. Slow and easy, and you can do it.

OK, so I did something I rarely do: I asked for help. Specifically, I wrote the manufacturer, and was told to call a certain tech (Phil). Phil scratched his head for moment, then suggested what he thought it was. Turns out, he was right. The wire in the right turn signal housing was "pinched". The rubber turn signal boot had pressed into it, exposing the wire and causing a short. So, the LEDs were being light all the time because the hot wire was working and the ground was grounding on the turn signal housing. It looked like it was flashing, but it was on all the time and the turn bulb drowned it out. It was obvious when I activated the turn signal while the LEDs were dangling by the wire. They were on and never blinked. Phil also suggested the fix. I used a piece of heat shrink tubing to cover the bared wires. Then, I used WD40 to lubricate the turn signal boot while I reinstalled it. Holy cow, it slipped right in! So, it didn't pinch the wires and it works now. Phil said that when they do the install, they use a Dremel to score the turn signal boot, creating a channel for the wires to slide in. I gave that a brief try, but the rubber is extremely thin in the tightest place. I abandoned that idea. I took a 250 mile ride today and it is still working. Yay! I'm amending my instructions above to add the WD-40 trick, and to mention the channelizing idea.

Well, I had a hiccup yesterday. It was the second time out with the bike and I was waiting for something to wiggle loose. I bought solder and new connectors, but hadn't gotten to it yet. I noticed yesterday when I was close to the office that the right blinker was acting very strangely. Instead of giving me the bright green blink indicator, it was muted. When I parked the bike, I took a look. It appeared all the rear lights were flashing when I turned on the right blinker. The left is working fine, as are the brakes. When I got home, none of the turn signals were working, nor were the LED brakes. Yes, the auxiliary light fuse was blown. Replacing that got it back to where only the right bulb wasn't blinking. I pulled off the license plate and looked at the wiring. I could really see nothing wrong. I thought maybe the actual yellow bulb was broken, so I pulled it out and inspected it. It seemed fine. I started unplugging the LEDs from the circuits. That is really easy since I just unplugged from the T-taps. With the LEDs removed, the factory setup worked fine. I started reconnecting the LEDs and discovered something really weird. When I have the left blinker connected, both the right and left blinkers work properly. That is, the LEDs seem to turn off when the yellow bulb comes on. But if I reconnect the right blinker LED, the left LED works properly but the right causes that all-blink condition. I put the license plate back on, being reminded how over-stuffed the area is and that I need to trim wires. The troubleshooting guide suggests that something similar to my condition is caused by the resister inside the shrink tube might have been crushed and needs replacement. With the area so over-flowing, I can see how it would be crushed. But, I really have no idea what is going on. I don't think the right blinker should work when it is disconnected. This situation is not covered in the troubleshooting page. I'm going to write the vendor and see if they can tell me what is going on. If they do, I'll add another update. As an aside, it is this kind of mysterious electrical stuff that makes me hesitate to work on the electrical system.

The weather is supposed to be nice... moderate (50s) with a 20% chance of rain in Houston, less than that in Chappell Hill. I wish I could be there. I might have to ride out there Sunday, since it is forecasted to be even nicer.
