Mike, great post! I bought the plastic scuff guards at the class, and they've come in handy. I think they said others have used old garden hose slit longitudinally. At the class, the instructor used an Ultra to demonstrate some maneuvers. I think he rode inside a 14' circle. IIRC, just about when we had the class, you were thinking of the ones to be held in Dallas. And then they were rained out? The RLAP site shows classes at the HOG Rally in Greune, but who wants to be around pigs? Why don't you come down some weekend, take the class in the morning and then finish your ride around Texas. In a few weeks, my son will be gone to college and we'll have an extra room. I live 5 miles from the class. The Houston site is down (as usual... very crappy ISP), but Mr. Google has the schedule in his cache. See ya Saturday.

SyncPro Help
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I got the fluid kit (for free) on Monday, and did the repair to the SyncPro yesterday. I sync'd today. I think the new kit forms a better seal around the adjustment screws. The gaskets are sent packed in grease, and I think this helps with the seal. Anyways, with the repair, the SyncPro functioned well. It is quite sensitive to the throttle, so high revs during syncing is not wise. Full disclosure: I mistakenly re-installed the two right side tubes backwards, with the flow restrictors on the gauge side instead of the bike side. The right two columns were very flaky, jumping a lot. I didn't see the cause for this until I was re-reading the instructions to find the storage settings, and when I checked I found that they were backwards. The left two channels were installed correctly, and were very stable. I didn't go back to check that it solved the flakiness, but I am confident that it will. In the end, after repair the SyncPro did the job, and I like the calibration feature. I'd like the motion to be more damped, but I am satisfied. Dave -
You should find the "Search" function useful. This allows you to find content without look through 500 pages. Search is located as a drop-down menu 3 items from the right side, close to "Log Out". Folks here commonly shorten "Ride Like A Pro" to RLAP, to aid in your searches. You might review [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24973]this thread[/ame], where we are passing around loaner DVDs. Among other things, people share their impressions. I took the RLAP class, and bought the DVD. I think the material on the DVD is useful, but it is not nearly as useful as taking the class. I don't know where you live in Louisiana, but there is a class in Houston. Dave

Heh, that's me! We were weaving through tennis balls, and were supposed to look down the line at our destination (the orange cone). If we looked where we were going, at that speed and angle we'd go down.

Magnets to make trafic lights turn green.
Dave77459 replied to Flyinfool's topic in General Tech Talk
Thank you for the link. I see there is a PDF, so I can print an olde timey courier version. I also saw this text: I just bet some annoyed policeman will consider a magnet to be tampering with the traffic control signal. Anyways, this is going to be part of arsenal if ever I am stopped for turning left against the signal. Thanks for the pointers. Dave -

I don't think I have a center stand? Just two holes where it would go, and that I use to connect my lift adapter. There's a lot of aluminum on this bike. Dave -
My son is attending Texas Tech, and that is move-in weekend. Will you be there? I'll be in a cage, but surely we can meet? Dave

To all, where would one mount this on an RSTD / 2nd Gen? On the oil pan? Thanks Jeff, for the great post and product link. I have a reluctant left turn detector coming out of the HOV lane that I go through every time I ride the bike to work. And, last weekend, I was on a group ride where we had 15 bikes stacked in the left turn lane, and the light still didn't trip. I've looked in the past and cannot find where this is referenced in Texas code. Can you point it to me? I've not gotten stopped for running red lights (or turning right with a shallow U-turn), but I'd like to have a printout of chapter and verse for when I am. Dave -
I will admit that I don't know what these are used for, or when (if?) I'll need them for my RSTD. Should I get one anyways, and extra kits too? If so, what stuff do I need? Dave

Speaking of classics, here's one I saw Saturday. It purrs like a kitten too. There were plenty of admirers, as shown by the second photo. Dave

The notes I have seen state that P/N ending in -95 -95A -98 -98A are non catalytic. Don't get the ones ending in -07. I think mine end in -95A, but am not at the bike to check. Dave

Question and help needed about the Stebel Air Horn
Dave77459 replied to a topic in General Tech Talk
My Stebel came with most of what I needed, except the bracket to put it where I wanted it. I know you can easily fabricate one to replace the stock one near the passengers floorboard, right side, but I bought the Carbon_One bracket, sold in the classifieds. The horn comes with the relay. BUT, I wired it straight from the battery because it wants a lot of current to get full loudness. I ran a fused 10 gauge wire to the relay, then 12 gauge wires from the relays to the horn, per the instructions (I think the bracket came with better instructions). I also bought special right angle connectors for under the horn. In all, it was easy. Some pics: The Stebel packaging: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3572/3390188084_63bb2562a8.jpg Here's the Carbon_One bracket. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3552/3374798958_fc85606e81.jpg Here's under the seat, where I put the relay. Note that I eventually installed an auxiliary fuse box, and cleaned up the wires. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3542/3660208718_1eac068e6f.jpg Installed. Note the right-angle connector on the bottom. Also, I took off the chrome disk from the back side of the horn, and glued it to the top of the horn. But that came off too easily. I think I need to epoxy it or something. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3228/3390568060_0beacb3ca8.jpg -
I hadn't seen it, so I found it on YouTube. I think it is funny! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GmSd7jk1yM]YouTube - McDonalds McCafe Mocha Minivan vs Motorcycle 2009 TV Commercial[/ame]

My RSTD custom project (Caution, nekkidness inside)
Dave77459 replied to Sunman's topic in Watering Hole
Very interesting to see the bike nekkid. I've had everything off of mine, except the fenders. Amazing how much "weight" those fenders add. Can't wait to see how it turns out. I hope you post some of the process shots too. Dave -
I would love to make that ride, but don't have any vacation. (I owe my company a few hours still) Your detour to Alaska should be quite exciting! Dave

I am soon to replace my Avon Venom MT90HB-16 Front tire: it is at 16,000 miles. I really like how my bike handles, but it is only my second (the horrible original Brickstone being the other) front tire. Should I try an alternate, or stick with the one I like? Dave

I live in Houston and have a buddy who works in one of the big powerplants here. I've passed along your message and asked if they need people. I'll keep my ears open too. Lots of places here making pipe and big steel stuff, so there must be something. I'm not gonna refute the comments made saying San Antonio is great, but I'll point out that Houston is better. Dave

Probably in the FAQ, but is there a way to get a printable version? Printing 30 individual pages... ugh. Dave

SyncPro Help
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Edit: I think I answered my own question. Page 2-9 of the service manual indicates it is 37 kPa (280 mmHg), or 28 cmHg. This is much less than the 44 cmHg MotionPro indicates is the maximum of the SyncPro. -
SyncPro Help
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Here is the explanation offered of why the new fluid will work better: I just love the back-peddling about using the word "may". I don't a non-lawyerly reading of the word may creates an implication of "will". :-( Anyways, I sorta understand that the refill kit "may" work for me, I guess because it replaces the O-rings more than it changes the fluid volume. Or something. Dave -
SyncPro Help
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I contacted MotionPro tech support, who responded thus: I am cautiously optimistic that this will work. I'll report back. I asked why this would work, and if I am answered, I'll report that as well. Dave -
I just bought one of these Harbor Freight 3-1/2" LCD Multimeter with Tachometer Kit to use in syncing carbs. While the carb syncing was a bust, the tach worked well. I wish it would be a little less instantaneous, because it jumps a lot, but otherwise seems a solid piece of equipment at a reasonable price. Dave

My buddies are talking about a return to Arkansas for us around that time. If they decide not to, I am very interested. Dave
