I put my bike up on the CARBON_ONE lift adapter to get a nice working height, allow the drain pan to slip underneath, and to make sure it is level. With 3.5L, you see the oil level in the sight? Dave -

I realize this will open me up to scorn, and rightly so. But... How do you change the oil? Or, more appropriately, how do you add the oil? The reason I ask is that I have been warming the engine, removing the bolt, letting it flow until nothing is draining, and putting the bolt back on. Then I'll add the amount the manual says is required (3.5L). I've noted this seemed to put the oil level too high, and now I read that less oil than specified is required. So, how are you adding oil? Do you put in... 3L... or something... then letting it sit and checking the level? Add some more, check the level, etc? How long do you wait before adding more? Or, am I mis-interpreting how you are adding oil? I just got my Motorkote today (came Saturday, but the office was closed, redelivered today) and I want to change my oil. I might have gotten away with overfilling before, but if I am now adding 8oz on top of overfilling... ! Advice wanted, scorn abided, Dave -

I use Windows XP64 here, so other's experiences may vary. Interestingly, I found a bookmarks.html both in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile Created 11/21/2008 Modified 10/17/2008 Accessed 8/27/2009 10:21:32AM Size: 7KB and C:\Documents and Settings\hathawayd\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xcbm3qbk.default Created 11/21/2008 Modified 10/17/2008 Accessed 8/27/2009 10:33:34AM Size: 885KB Both files are updated recently. Looking in the "Program Files" version file, it appears truncated. *shrugs* Probably the safest thing to do is use the Bookmarks Organizer (Ctrl+Shift+B) and select "Export Bookmarks" to make a copy. Regarding the bookmarks, you can save them. They are stored in a file called, oddly, bookmarks.html You can search your computer for this file. If you are using Windows, chances are that it is in: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile\ user is the user name she uses. On this computer, it is hathawayd, because that is my login name. profile is her Firefox profile name. This is more or less randomly generated. You can see the name by looking in the Profiles folder. On this machine, my current profile is xcbm3qbk.default. If you have multiple profiles, you will have multiple bookmarks.html files. I make it a habit to send this file to my gmail account, so it is never lost. (I don't delete gmail since storage is nearly unlimited.) If I ever have to restore my Firefox installation, I can just copy this file down. If I am on a foreign computer, I can open the file out of email and find a link. Now, regarding the weirdness, she might create a new profile to see if it is an extension she is having issues with. This firefox help page might be useful. Depending on version, she might also try disabling Adblock Plus, to see if it is maybe blocking something necessary. I use the NoScript extension also, and that causes weirdness. I've been following this topic, and am nearly ready to buy. Thanks Wanderer for the current special link. (32oz for $25) I note at the bottom that they say, "No fill allowance is required." What does that mean? -
I love my Venoms, but haven't tried anything else to compare. Except the vile OEM Brickstones. I am running 150/90HB-15 Rear and the thinner MT90HB-16 Front tires. Since I am very happy with life and performance, I'm sticking with these. Dave

This is pretty much the case with most fuel gauge systems in motorcycles - they have a hard time being accurate because they don't have much experience designing them, because of the small amount of fuel, the way tanks are situated on bikes (high up) and the fact that bikes move around a lot. The best thing is to just trust the odo and know how far a bike can go on the fuel it has. Interesting story, and the comments are as well. I found this one peculiar, since I haven't heard of gas gauge issues on our bikes. Is there one and I just haven't been paying attention? Dave

Rick, Interesting. One thing the Motorcycle Cruiser article talks about is how sedans are designed to reduce drag via laminar flow. Cruiser motorcycles, with their upright rider, do a poor job of maintaining that flow. They say a typical motorcycle has a drag coefficient of around .6 to .7 (about the same as a bus), while a sedan is around .35. I just know that my mpg drops a lot over 60mph. The best mpg I ever got was through hairpin curves in AR, where I was lucky to hit 45. Dave

Hey, I'm with you. I have an RSTD and get your worst-case mileage as my typical. My bike has that huge windscreen, and I know I could get much better mileage if I went slower. I like to ride fast, because that's how traffic moves around here, and I have a lead wrist too. As far as whether your mileage is good, I dunno. If you can ride with another bike, so that you get the same gas and ride the same conditions, you'd have something to compare against. Dave

Drag increases with the square of velocity. In other words, a little bit of added speed adds a lot of drag. The power needed to push through the air increases with the cube of velocity. Once you hit the sweet spot, a little speed increase has an huge increase in power used. According to the May 2009 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser, under 50mph around 5% of resistance is due to drag. By "highway speeds" (65?), 60% of a vehicle's energy is used to overcome drag. A motorcycle with a fairing and large windscreen has a particular problem with drag at highway speeds. In short, your experience of a dramatic decrease in mpg is typical and expected. Dave

I carry much of what was listed, but I actually bought a tool on my last trip: a wrench to fit my highway pegs. After 1500 miles, I was tired of having the pegs move slightly when I wriggled in my seat. I don't carry it when I am on a 300 mile day trip, but it will go in my large travel bag when I am long hauling.

I am really sorry for the incident. Coulda been me. Two Saturdays ago, I went down a farm lane. I saw two dogs begin to run to the road when they heard me. I accelerated, hoping to get past them before they reached the road. We arrived at the same place at about the same time. I had time to think what I was going to do, and when they gave every indication of continuing into the road, I blasted the air horn as I zoomed past. The dogs looked stunned, and stopped abruptly. Maybe their hearing was damaged, but they lived. I was out scouting a location, and have now marked that road as to be avoided. Again, I am sorry. I think you did the right thing, not stopping. Your wife should have come first. Dave

Saw one at a dealership, and asked my buddy who rides a BMW R 1200GS. He told me the LT in the name stands for Light Truck... it is very top heavy and unwieldy (he said). Maybe that is by standards of a BMW stepping up to a touring bike. I thought it looked nice.

Yeah, Houston is one of those towns where the reality on the road differs from how it looks on a map. We have this thing called "traffic" that messes it all up. :-) Dave
