  4. I ran a wiring pair from the auxiliary fuse box I installed under the seat, to the relay. The relay is therefore grounded at the battery, and the lamps are grounded wherever the dealer did it. Dave
  5. An idea.... In Texas, you need to have adequate health insurance to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. I have several friends who have been stopped and given citations for riding without helmets, even though they do have adequate health insurance. The officer simply did not believe them or didn't accept their proof. If having a standard proof of insurance means you can more easily ride without a helmet, if that is your choice, then I am for it. It will make officer's lives easier too. Note: I choose to wear a helmet when I ride. Dave

  7. Sorry I missed the original post. I live maybe 10 minutes from the class. Unfortunately, I am heading out with friends that day. Figures the timing wouldn't work. There are a number of good places for lunch in Galvez. For the biker bar with a good burger, you may like The Spot. Park on the front sidewalk like everyone else. You may also like Cafe Michael Burger. They have the #23rd best hamburger in the State of Texas (the Tiki Burger), according to the recent Texas Monthly research. Literally across the street is a biker icehouse, Woody's. I was there yesterday, and they have a nice second floor patio with views of the Gulf. However, be aware that there can frequently be a couple hour wait for the ferry. The local variable traffic signs will let you know before you get to Galveston.   8. Thanks for the pointer. I got the bundle, with one "baby blue" for smaller ears, and two other regular-sized plugs. If I like them, I'll keep the bottle of foam plugs to attenuate snoring when I join the group riding to Big Bend. Dave
  9. I tried wearing earplugs on my trip to the Grand Canyon, and found that I really liked it. I felt fresher at the end of the day, and on a long trip that meant something. I plan to ride with them whenever I take multi-day trips. Happily, I have three planned for the next two months! Yay! The problem is not me, but my wife. She seems to have small ear canals, and the foam inserts don't stay in. I can sometimes get them in for her, but she can't. She's also had problems with ear buds, which never stay in. I wonder if someone has solved this problem? Maybe the musician-oriented prong style ones would work? Would they also allow her to hear the music speakers in the helmet? Where would I find these kind of plugs? If they might work, that is. Dave
  10. I am using Valvoline Premium Conventional 10W-40. Exactly. I haven't bothered doing a lot of oil research because my edition isn't bad. I can hear the whine/chirp at times, but it doesn't annoy or bother me. My focus has been on keeping up with regular oil changes and trying to extend engine life that way. Someone here said any high quality modern oil will do that, which has been my theory. I also was told to run dino oil until I am happy with the performance, and then to switch to synthetic to lock it in. Well, it keeps running better and better, so synth is still in the future. So, hey, if MK does lessen the noise, great. If it doesn't, no big deal. I'll try now to forget it is in there, until the day arrives that when I try to hear the whine and can't. Listening for the whine is only making me hear it. LOL Dave
  11. Just to provide a little balance to the positive reviews... I put it in about 100 miles ago, and have noticed no decrease. In fact, because I am listening for it, the whine sounds louder to me. I suspect I have been putting it out of mind, and now I am paying attention, so I hear it. Note that I drained about .75L out of the bike after the oil change because it was over-full. Some of that is perhaps the Motorkote. I'll provide an update after my next longer ride. Dave
  12. I ran a tester on the wiring bundle. The blue wire is always energized when the running lights are on (ignition on). That's the one I used to power the relay. When the key is turned to off or accessory, the passing lamps are off. I put the relay inside the headlamp housing, and in fact it is in the velcro bundle. So now, I have passing lamps that are on whether or not the high beams are on. Yay! Dave
  13. If I am going to use the front running lights/turn signals to energize the relay, which color wire do I tap into? I think there are three: one for the flasher, one for the running, and one ground. Dave
  14. I have an RSTD with dealer-installed passing lamps. Right now, there is a single red wire coming from the headlamp harness, fused, and going to the left lamp. I assume that the power for the lamps is coming from there, and that the power for the right lamp goes through the mounting bar from the left lamp (where there is the switch). Do you think I can mount the relay in the headlamp housing? There seems to be room in the RSTD headlamp, but I worry about heat. I plan to use a t-connector to energize the relay from the front running lamps. I have run a wire-pair under the tank to the front from my fuse box under the seat. So now my plan is to: Run power from the fuse box to spade 30 on the relay. Run negative from the fuse box to spade 86 on the relay. Run the tapped wire from the running lights to spade 85 on the relay. Run the existing red fused passing lamp wire to spade 87 on the relay. From the lamp's perspective, all I am doing is changing where it is powered. But this all depends on the headlamp housing being a safe place for the relay. Is it? Dave

  17. My friends are figuring out a trip to AR in the middle of October. One proposed stop is at Cliff House, which is right down the road from The Hub. How was the riding around The Hub? We're mostly passing through on Hwy 17 and Hwy 74. Food recommendations in the area? Anyone ever stay at Cliff House? It looks very nice. Dave

  19. I use this one on my RSTD: RAM-B-149Z-GA12U I like that it is inward and protected by the windshield. When I asked in another group, someone recommended the mirror mount. A photo is attached. I am sorry this doesn't quite answer your question, but it might give you some ideas. Dave
  20. The September '09 issue of the AMA American Motorcyclist magazine has a lengthy discussion of SAE J2825. (This link worked for me, p46 onward) In short, there is a easily performed standard test now, and I'd expect jurisdictions to adopt it. Has anyone performed this test on a Venture (or better, RSTD) wearing stock Road King pipes? I'm not a loud pipe advocate, but I like the louder sound from my RK setup and am wondering if I need to worry about failing this test. The article says H-D stock pipes pass, but I haven't compared whether they are louder on my bike. Dave
  21. I had a similar reaction when I went from the stock Brickstone to the Venom 130 (MT90). I had read that it was like stopping beating yourself up. The new tire was so effortless to control. Hope you enjoy it a good long time, without literally killing yourself. Dave
  22. An update: I have drained .5L and it is still over the top line. It was way overfilled, especially with the Motorkote added in addition. I wonder why the amount stated in the manual is so off? Dave

  24. I'd never changed the filter before last night. I've been alternating with the dealer on oil changes / maintenance, but I had a couple filters and went for it. Holy cow the filter was on TIGHT! Anyways, the wife was using the computer, so I didn't get to check feedback before starting. I put in about 3.5L and the oil was just at the top line, or maybe even above. I thought I would be safe-ish, since the manual calls for 3.7L when you replace the filter cartridge. With the Motorkote, I am hyper full. Should I let some oil out? If so, should I use the drain plug or maybe siphon some out via the filler cap? Whatchu think? Dave
  25. The lift adapter is also good for cleaning chrome. Regarding the 3.5L, I was just reading numbers out of the manual, which is in liters (litres?). But yeah, the 3.5L seems to be a slight overfill. I guess I'll find out tonight, since I plan to change the oil and put in my Motorkote. Dave
