For 500 miles in an entire weekend? Cellphone Credit Card AAA Card -- free towing AMA Card -- free towing I do have a tiny tool set under my saddle bag mat, but if I am concerned about breaking down on what amounts to a "ride to lunch"-sized trip, I should be re-evaluating my maintenance and trip preparation procedure. I'll take rain gear if rain seems very likely. I can't outride warm weather within 500 miles, and warm and wet isn't so horrible for an hour. I guess if I am meeting friends, a clean shirt for him and her isn't out of the question. Dave

passing Lamp Installs
Dave77459 replied to Rickster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Are you rewiring more than just switching out out lamp types? I'd think 35W == 35W if nothing else changes. However... Last summer the caretaker of my bike slightly rewired the lamps to remove the super small switch that the dealer installed in the housing. By removing that undersized POS, the lamps could attain full power. I started getting warnings that I was not charging properly. (This is with 55W bulbs) In short, by removing that bottleneck, my lamps were pulling their full power and it was too much. I recently downsized to 35W (H3) lamps and they are still darn bright. But now my bike can handle the load. If all you are doing is switch lamp types, I would believe you are OK. If you are doing something else, like fixing a dealer's shoddy installation, your mileage may vary. Dave -
Hmmm, I am one of those who habitually runs on RES rather than ON. I think I'll use ON until I regain confidence that it was a fluke. Good idea! It is also super easy to check the fuel sender plug connection. Dave

I didn't realize the gearing was different. Is there no end of things to learn?? Thanks for the valuable information! Dave

I think this thread applies to me, so rather than starting a new one, I thought I'd tag on. Yesterday on a ride, I filled up then ran about 20 miles and shut off. After an hour, we saddled back up. About a mile down the road, I noticed the low fuel indicator counting. On an RSTD, when it senses low fuel, a count up ODO starts, letting you know how many miles you've gone with low fuel. I noticed it at F1.3, and was greatly puzzled. It sure seemed like when I was stopped, the tank was drained. I did a quick U-turn to head back to the nearest known gas station. Then I stopped and looked in the tank: it was still full. Mentally shrugging, I did another U-turn and noticed that fuel was being added to the tank. It eventually indicated full again. After that, it operated normally. Is this another example of the fuel sender problem? I've had my tank off so many times recently that I would not doubt the connection is wonky. I'll add some dialectric grease and make sure it is solid. Whatchu think? Dave

My lens was scratched in my accident. Having this part number is a terrific help, thanks. Do you know if they sell a complete lamp assembly, chrome housing and glass assembly, for the H3? The chrome is dented and has that stupid switch in it. It'd be nice to replace it. Dave

The reason I asked is that I assumed there was a correlation between RPM and fuel economy. It still puzzles me, but I get better fuel economy at 70mph in 4th gear than I do in 5th. Above 75, 5th is the right gear, but if I am doing 75, my fuel economy is falling into a black hole anyways. I have more power in 4th gear at 70mph than 5th, so I am just barely puzzled. But still, I am. LOL I just wondered if that were true for more than just me, but if everyone runs in 5th, then my bike must be special. Not that I doubted it.... Dave

Looking for an on-line tire deal
Dave77459 replied to ActionJax's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have gone with Jake Wilson and Dennis Kirk. However, when I recently needed an Avon Venom fast, I bought it from Amazon, where I am a Prime member. They were within $2 of Dennis Kirk on price, but I got overnight shipping for $3.99. If I wanted overnight from Dennis Kirk, it would add $146 to the price. In fact, Dennis Kirk always adds a "$5 tire fee," which makes them more expensive than Amazon who gives free 2-day shipping to Prime members. There wasn't a Dunlop E3 on offer from Amazon, so back to Dennis Kirk I went for my new rear. If you are a member of Amazon Prime, it's worth looking there. Dave -
Talk to OWEN. He recently moved on to a FJR. Dave

Do all'y'all use 5th at 70?? Dave

I am still bruised and have aching ribs from when my rear went flat. Its tough to sleep still. Tonight I hope to straighten the passing lamp bar that was bent. I don't know if I could ride a rear tire that was knowingly damaged. That said, I would take the tire off and look at the inside. Is it punctured? Do I see any hint of damage? A bubble maybe? I think I'd run Slime if I didn't chuck the tire. I might also buy a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which is about the cost of a new tire. Then I could run the tire, feel assured, and maybe get a full life out of it. After that, I'd still have the TPMS. I dunno. Maybe if I didn't see black and blue still when I looked in the mirror, and didn't keep thinking of ibuprofen.... Dave

Many thanks to Pktexas for driving me out to Tom's to collect Roxie yesterday. We left around 10AM and got home around 10PM after dropping her off at Kreggerdoodle's. That's a long day when feeling achy. I've felt better after an ironbutt! I really appreciate the support and friendship I've found as a result of this website. I've lost track of the number of times I've been amazed and gratified at the honest-to-goodness brotherhood I've personally experienced. I know I didn't really drop her, but I'm making the $5 donation just because this website made these friendships possible. Thanks again Perry, Kreg, Tom. Love you guys. Dave

Derrek, You are right, the STR-4NK35-40-01 is billed as the mount. I've just never seen that on a RSTD. It has always been the STR-1D635-40-00. This link shows the right part number (1D635) but the different look (4NK35). One I looked at earlier suggested the 4NK35 is for the VT1300. Confusing! As it happens, I am in the market for the mount, and a lamp housing. The mount and the left housing were damaged in my recent accident. Plus, the dealer drilled a hole in the left housing, and this is a great time to get rid of that. If you find yourself with excess parts... Dave

I just installed the Kuryakyn reservoir mount switches, which I think look nice and give me the control I want. The switch energizes the relay, rather than interrupts the power to the lamps. That means there is very little power going through the switch. You'll want a fuse between the battery and the relay, also. Dave

The Yamaha Custom Tri-Bar Passing Lamps page says this: Royal Star application: designed to coordinate with the Tri-Bar Headlight. Passing lamp mounts required for installation (STR-4NK35-40-01) sold separately. Now, the interesting thing is that the part they give (STR-4NK35-40-01) is for the sealed beam passing lamps. You will also need the bar! (STR-1D635-40-00). If I recall correctly, the bar was just the bar, and the lamps came with the housing. (Passing lamp page) So, I read it that you will need to buy the bar, the housing/lamp, and the tri-bar. I bought the sealed beam and the bar, and had the dealer install them. They did it as Yamaha recommended, which means they used an undersized toggle switch (drilled into my lamp housing!!!) and wired them to the high beam circuit. They only came on with high beams, and when they blew a fuse, it took out all my lighting in front. You will do yourself a favor if you install them properly, using a relay powered straight from the battery, and a switch to the relay switched power. Dave

Welcome to VRO! Not only are you welcome here, but you will find invaluable information to get the most from your RSTD. Just tone it down a little on blabbing at the superiority of the RSTD over the Ventures. There is a fight between ancient First Generation Ventures and Second Generation Ventures. We don't need them to realize that they are both inferior to the RSTD. No need to create undue hostility, right? Again, welcome! Dave

IIRC, you went to great lengths to remove the fender without taking the rear wheel off. You'll have to remove it to grease the splines. I reckon almost everyone thinks your wheel is off, which is why you are getting the advice you are. Have you checked brake pads? A decent project while the fender is off is to install an auxiliary fuse box in the battery compartment. I anchored mine to the plastic piece in the rear, and tightening it down with the fender in place was aggravating. Of course, you may not be a farkler, so you may not need extra wiring. It looks a little different now, but you can see the anchor bolt I am speaking of. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3542/3660208718_1eac068e6f.jpg Dave

Help it won't start
Dave77459 replied to StarUmp's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had a very similar experience recently. The buzzing / clicking solenoid / starter relay. At our local maintenance day, we did a lot of diagnosing. What it finally came down to was my 4 month old battery. It has been replaced and no problems since. I suggest removing the battery and taking it to a dealer for load testing. Charge it fully first, then let them test it. That was my plan, but when I took it to where I'd bought it, and asked them to test it, they simply replaced the battery. There were lots of batteries being returned, so dead batteries are common, even when new. One of the dealers here had offered to load test it for me, but I couldn't make it there until next Thursday and wanted to ride this Sunday. So I gave in to the fast answer rather than having it tested. FWIW, the dealer said that a surprising number of brand new batteries fail. And when they do, he sees symptoms like you describe. Good luck! Dave -
Thanks Tom. Perry has offered to come with me, and trailer her back to Kreg's where we can change the tire. We're kinda waiting on schedules and whether I feel up to the trip. I expect I will. Thank you for your hospitality! Dave

I thought it was mentioned, but looking back I see it wasn't. A mile or five back up the road we went through a construction zone. At least lanes were closed. It is very possible that some debris was waiting to leap at my tire. I think I need another Gremlin Bell! I am feeling pretty good today. Watching Saturday Night Live last night was very painful. Laughing hard is incompatible with hurt ribs. "Laughed until I cried" has a whole new meaning for me! Thank you everyone for your well wishes! Dave

Compare Venture with Suzuki vs1400 Intruder please
Dave77459 replied to DrAlloway's topic in Watering Hole
You might also consider the Royal Star Tour Deluxe (RSTD), which is the Venture innards with a cruiser feel. You get many of the benefits, in a more familiar format. You don't get the fairing and the things in it, but I rarely miss those having never had them. Meanwhile I have a bike with the same long distance comfort (superb), acceleration (like a rocket) and top end... kinda. The RSTD comes with a huge windscreen so triple digit speed is not relaxing with a cross wind. That same windscreen reduces the mpg to the mid-30s. But I am confident of riding in rain without getting drenched. Handling in twisties is fun, with lots of energy and secure handling. If you are looking for a comfortable long distance cruiser, the RSTD is pretty great. Dave -
Just FYI, it was a Dunlop E3 with plenty of tread left. They say pictures are worth a thousand words, so here goes. Dave

Thanks all. I'm really sore but that just reminds me that I'm alive. I was in the passing lane doing 75 when it happened, so just sore is a good result. Ribs and hip make it tough to get out of bed, so I think I'll stay in it. Thank you Perry and Tom for all your help. I'm grateful. Dave

Headlight replacement
Dave77459 replied to Steve-O's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I like the blue LED look, but you are liable to be pulled over here if you travel with them on. Blue == LEO, and Red == Fire/Rescue. Since my bike is black, color matching is a snap! Anything looks good.
