  1. Thanks guys! We're bumping into daily riding limits, so we may skip Hwy 123. I'm trying to push the issue though. If I go, I'll have the navigator take pictures. Dave
  2. I tried lifting up on the screw, but it just bent the tab that holds the rubber gasket. I can touch the rubber gasket and stop it from turning, but the screw doesn't seem to come out. I'm attaching a photo or two to show where I am talking about in case it is confusing. Dave
  3. I have a 2006 RSTD. The front right screw that holds on the tank cover "chrome" is not coming out. It turns, but is not coming out. I can feel behind it, and something rubbery feeling is turning with the screw. What is this? Any idea on how to get the screw out? It was at the dealer, who performed the 26.6K valve clearance service, and they took off the tank. I was going to call Tuesday (closed tomorrow), because they left off the black plastic screw caps from the gas tank bolts. Now I see that they lost three of the little plastic washers from the ignition cover. And this screw looks to be overtightened or something. What is it with dealer service? *sigh* Dave
  4. We are finalizing our routes. Is Hwy 123 south of Mt Judea paved? GPS says no, Google Earth shows a centerline. We'll be riding 2-up. Is it good enough condition for that? Dave
  5. Based on this, would you recommend going Sunday instead of Saturday? I'm in Sugar Land, and you're north. Maybe the most obvious meeting spot is near 45 & BW8? Is the party in the Peanut Butter Warehouse? Dave
  6. I'm definitely going, probably Saturday. My wife and I like to go early and leave early. I do like to see the zillion bikes on the Strand and shop the vendors, but 8 hours is plenty. I've never been to the seawall part. Is it worthy? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2048/1863112409_2b9c62bee2.jpg
  7. That is an insane program. I've already got $300 in rubber, plus mounting. In a year! Dave
  8. Thank you for the post. I do want to make sure all'y'all know that the dealership did NOT mention warranty issues at all. That is all my worry. I also appreciate the offers of help. I blew through 26K on my ironbutt three weekends ago, and doing a group ride next weekend that will tack on another 1500 miles. So it is past due and I can't wait. But, I might ride up and have the steering bearings checked. I had the dealership do the 16K service, but belts and suspenders.... Thanks again for the post. Dave
  9. Ponch, Yes, this is Houston Motorsports. I like Brian, especially as he has learned his job. He seemed rather new when I first met him a year ago July. He still doesn't seem to be all that familiar with RSTDs, but I can't really fault him there. But he knows me, and that means something. (He loves blowing the airhorn to surprise the other guy LOL) He got me in today, and it didn't look too busy. In another three weeks, I'd be doing the 30K service. LOL Dave
  10. Update: I dropped Roxie off at the dealer, and then waited 15 minutes for my ride. I was getting in the cage when the Service Manager hustled over. He needed to speak to me. He knows he quoted 3.5 hours of labor, but he just realized what this was and it is really 9 hours of labor. The cost jumped from $400 to $800. His explanation is that he thought this was the 24K service, not the 26K (despite my patience in explaining what I wanted). In an odd way, this is a bit comforting. I had heard it was an "all day job" and the 3.5 hour quote made me wonder if they were inept. I'm a smidge more confident that they know what they are doing now. But also, I wonder how the 24K service takes 3.5 hours? Or how the hours treble but the cost only doubles? Dealers are mysterious beasts. Dave
  11. I did a search without success to find Speedohealer installation instructions here. I think I remember someone actually taking pictures of it, and t was indeed simple. Anyone have a link to the tread I am thinking of? Edit: The have a nice PDF here. Did I also read that I needed to look for a special Yamaha harness? Where are folks buying their Speedohealers these days? Dave
  12. I have been told that it is an all-day job. I was also told it was a $250 job. I guess $400 is somewhere between those. It's a tough point. The major tasks are the ones where I could save a lot of money doing myself. At the same time, they are the ones that would be most disputed (I suppose) in the case of a warranty repair. I've mainly decided that I'll have the dealer do the non-trivial services, thereby showing a commitment to "doing it right". *shrug* I work with the assumption that if a business wants to do things in bad faith, I can't stop them. Dave
  13. I don't know that it is required for my warranty, but I don't want them to be able to make a claim. Ya know? Dave
  14. I am due for the 26,600 mile (42,000 Km) service. The maintenance manual says that at 26.6K, a valve clearance check and adjustment needs to be performed. I called my dealer and was estimated 3.5 hours of labor and $400. From his description of what should be done, it seems that they'll perform a 4,000 mile service. "It is a very thorough service", he said. Does this seem reasonable? Dave
  15. It was new to me, and when they started "O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave", I got beyond goosebumps. Good one! Makes me even more proud my son goes to TTU. Thanks.
  16. Do you feel the bolt heads under the rubber floorboard mats? The side view photo makes it look like they raised the rubber? Dave
  17. I ride a RSTD, and while I am not so worried about frostbite, my wife is when we ride two-up. It doesn't get as cold in Texas, but we did ride into the lower 30s last year. How much excess output does a RSTD enjoy? Could it easily handle heated clothes (I have halogen passing lamps installed)? Maybe two pair? Dave
  18. Congratulations! I did a solo ride a couple weeks back and felt I did poorly to take 19 hours when they say "most people" do it in 18. Do you feel like having more people slowed you down? As far as rain gear, I rode home from the Grand Canyon in more rain than sun. My el-cheapo Frogg Toggs kept me bone dry behind my RSTD windscreen. My buddy on the K1200GS got soaked in his expensive gear, including rain boots. We think it was about 1000 miles of rain out of 1500 miles total. Again, CONGRATS!
  19. I saw this sign at the Devil's Backbone Tavern near Blanco, TX: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3348/3436088327_9b72dcaaaf.jpg More seriously, I had a friend tell me that he likes to trailer because he takes his wife and she'd prefer to shop than ride. They park, then they both do their own thing. Can't explain the many trucks I pass with two dudes in the passenger compartment and two bikes on the trailer. Is it right to give the biker sign to someone towing their bike? Dave
  20. What is a stinger? I see we can get one for an additional $15 ($140 total)? How hard it is to add the light pigtail too? I have installed Electrical Connection LED running lights / blinkers and have NO room in the cave behind my license plate. I have an RSTD. Dave
  21. We had a planning meeting this morning regarding our trip in a few weeks to Arkansas. Not far from the Hub is Mt. Judea. North of Mt. Judea, Hwy 123 shows on our maps as paved. But south of Mt. Judea, it looks like Hwy 123 is gravel or dirt until it reaches Hwy 16. Other sources suggest that it is paved. Can anyone recall the condition of Hwy 123 between Mt. Judea and Hwy 16? Dave
  22. I want to hang one below my luggage rack on my RSTD. When I go on overnight trips, I want to carry the toolkit from the Iron Butt Association Archive of Wisdom. And the next trip will include my wife... Any toolbags that have proven to work there?
  23. I bought a sheepskin at IKEA and trimmed to fit [my RSTD]. I must say that I am not entirely satisfied with it, as it modified my sitting position to push my crotch into the tank. Dave
  24. I was taught to turn off my fuel in the Riders Edge class. But I don't. I leave it on reserve all the time. Dave
